Canal Pointe Nursing & Rehab

Canal Pointe is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center located in Akron, Ohio, across the street from St. Thomas Hospital with a beautiful view of the Akron skyline. Canal Pointe offers a full range of medical services to meet the individual needs of residents, including short-term rehabilitative services and long-term skilled care. Working with the resident’s physician, the staff, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, nurses, and social workers, establishes a comprehensive treatment plan intended to restore functioning to the highest potential. The goal is to provide quality care in a comfortable, compassionate environment.

A partnership between the University of Akron's School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Canal Pointe allows first year graduate student to obtain experience in this medical setting. Graduate students have the opportunity for clinical experiences at Canal Pointe, under the supervision of certified and licensed speech-language pathologists who specialize in working with tracheostomized, ventilator dependent and neurologically-impaired adults.


A wide range of speech-language pathology services are available at Canal Pointe for the diagnosis and treatment of communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders:
  • Passy-Muir speaking valve intervention for tracheostomy and ventilator dependent patients
  • Dysphagia therapy for tracheostomy and ventilator dependent patients
  • Aphasia
  • Apraxia
  • Cognitive deficits
  • Dysarthria
  • Dysphagia
  • Augmentative and alternative communication
