Financial Aid

Financial aid is available to qualified applicants based upon academic record, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation. Financial need may also be considered.

Graduate Assistantships

The School currently has eight graduate assistantships which it can award to first and/or second year students in speech-language pathology. The assistantships are awarded for one academic year at a time, but are generally renewed for a second year unless the student experiences academic difficulty or fails to carry out assistantship duties. The assistantship pays tuition but not fees for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, plus a stipend (currently $7,800 a year) for the Fall and Spring Semesters in return for twenty (20) hours of work per week during the Fall and Spring Semesters.

Assistantships are generally awarded for the full academic year, beginning in September.

Please indicate your desire to be considered for financial assistance on the Graduate School application for admission.

Fellowships

The School also has a fellowship which is awarded for one academic year only. The fellowship pays 100% tuition for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Students receive a $5,000 stipend which is distributed in biweekly increments over the academic year. There is no work requirement, but the student must be enrolled full-time each semester in order to retain the award. Fellowships are awarded to individuals who have expressed an interest in financial aid, and application procedures and deadlines are the same as for admission.

Hearing Loss in Children-Traineeship

The University of Akron will offer 5 traineeships to students interested in working with children who have hearing loss. The U.S. Department of Education funds these traineeships. Students will learn to use technology such as hearing aids and cochlear implants to enhance the lives of these children. Students will receive a tuition waiver for two years and a $5,000 stipend for each year.

Community Internships

The speech-language pathology faculty has developed a number of community internships with agencies who benefit from the services of speech-language pathology graduate students. Students work in community settings with clients who they may eventually serve as professionals. Current internship sites include Akron Public Schools, United Disabilities Services, Ardmore, Inc., Hattie Larlham, NorthWest Local Schools, Kumon Math and Reading Center, PSI Affiliates INC., Hennis Health Care (Dover and Bolivar), Medina Society for Handicapped Citizens, Inspiring Young Minds Child Care, Summit Academy Management, and Steubenville City Schools. Stipends vary from agency to agency. Internships also include payments for tuition. Weekend work is frequently required.

Diversity Scholarships

Some students with diverse backgrounds will qualify for a Diversity Assistantship. This will include a stipend of approximately $7,800 and tuition remission for Fall, Spring, and Summer. The assistantship requires a 20 hour a week work committment to the School of Speech-Language Pathology. These are typically renewable for the second year.

OMNIE (OHIO MASTER’S NETWORK INITIATIVES IN EDUCATION)

The OMNIE Project is sponsored and supported by the Ohio Department of Education(ODE) and offers two program options:

OMNIE COLLABORATIVE WEB-BASED DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM
Students enrolled in this distance learning program will take online coursework offered by five participating universities (University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, University of Toledo and Miami University). The University of Akron will coordinate the student’s clinical education through professionals who practice speech-language pathology within driving distance of the student. Upon completion of this three-year distance learning program, newly licensed SLP’s will be required to seek and accept school based employment for two years. OMNIE will provide a total of $8,000-$10,000 in tuition reimbursement to these students incrementally as they reach certain milestones.

OMNIE SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLGY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
This program provides fast-track access to a career in speech-language pathology practice in the schools. The first three semesters of the program requires intensive, full-time on-campus coursework and clinical experience in speech-language pathology. During this time, students participating in the University of Akron’s OMNIE intern program receive $12,000 in financial support in addition to a first year tuition waiver. The second year requires the student to complete an internship in one of Ohio’s participating school districts while completing coursework online. The school district will provide student support at a rate of $25,000 plus full benefits (medical and TRS) during the intern year. This program requires a long term commitment to the participating school district. Students will complete two years of internship and then two to three years of employment following program completion.

The scholarship provides an opportunity for training a second year graduate student who has demonstrated exemplary performance while assigned to the Auditory-Based Clinic for children with hearing loss.
