Programs offered in this area are unique for several reasons. Many allied health programs have limited enrollment, and have a separate application process in addition to admission to Summit College and The University of Akron. All of the programs require either a clinical portion or an externship in a health care setting, where the student uses the skills taught in class to perform tasks within their particular discipline. Clinical practice gives the student an opportunity to function in a realistic work environment under the supervision of clinical faculty or other health care professionals.
Only students who are admitted to a degree program are allowed to enroll in the classes offered by that program. As a result, class sizes are small and courses are offered once a year, and in sequence.
Health care is an area with better than average opportunities for employment, and the Department of Allied Health in UA's Summit College offers students programs which can lead to rewarding and productive careers.
