About the Program
The Early Childhood Development program is designed to prepare students to become employed as child care workers in various early childhood settings with children from birth to age five.
The AAS degree in Early Childhood Development provides specialization in the child development area, and can be completed while attending the college on a full-time or part-time basis.
Pre-kindergarten Associate Certification is available to students who meet program requirements.
(top) Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Early Childhood Development program are prepared to work in many early childhood educational settings. Employment in child care settings may include assistant teacher, head teacher or program director in Head Start, community child care centers, family home daycare centers, and various agencies throughout the region. Pre-Kindergarten Associate Certification is available upon graduation from the program.
(top) Where Learning is Doing
Early Childhood Development students gain practical experience through observation and participation in the University of Akron Center for Early Childhood and other centers in Akron and surrounding areas.
In addition, students gain valuable experience through the Capstone course, Early Childhood Practicum. This course gives students opportunity to work as early childhood professionals a minimum of 156 hours during the students' final semester. The Early Childhood practicum helps students learn how appropriate practices support young children in their development, physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

Admissions Info and Application
Summit College supports the Tech Prep curriculum and the college prep core curriculum. Summit College will accept all conditionally and unconditionally admitted students into it's programs and determine the course of required prescriptive activities for conditionally admitted students on an individual basis. Upon individual assessment, students are advised as to the courses they should take.
