The Dean

Silverman Stan Silverman is currently associate provost, dean of Summit and University Colleges and professor of social science at The University of Akron.

Prior to being named dean, he served as Acting Chair of the Department of Counseling in the College of Education at The University of Akron. He has advised organizations, of all types and sizes, including some of the largest organizations in the world, in the areas of organizational change and development, performance management and appraisal, leadership and management development, employee training and development, and human resource staffing.

He has co-authored a nationally recognized book and published articles on performance appraisal, personnel selection, individual employee change, and job analysis in The Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, The Journal of Psychology, Academy of Management Executive, Public Personnel Management, Personnel Assessment Monographs, the Journal of Cognitive and Affective Learning, and The Journal of Business and Psychology. He has written a book chapter on individual development and performance management/appraisal for a handbook series published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and BNA books.

Stan has been very active nationally in Division 14 (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Inc.) of the American Psychological Association where he has chaired national conventions and various committees. He has co-authored a book chapter for the society’s Professional Practice Series on performance management that was published in 2009 and won the 2010 HRD Book of the Year Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development. His current research focuses on arrogance in the workplace and recently published the results of a 4 year study in the journal Human Performance. He is a Charter Member of the American Psychological Society. He has been to Kyoto, Japan where he presented his work on performance management/performance appraisal at the 22nd International Congress of Applied Psychology.

Stan is co-author of the book, "Working Scared: Achieving Success in Trying Times." He speaks throughout the United States, has appeared on radio stations all across the country discussing his book, and has been a guest on NBC's "Today" show, discussing workplace issues.
