The Service and Student Success Impact (SASSI)
Fellowship Program

The SASSI Fellowship is a grant-funded program funded through The Midwest Campus Compact Consortium (M3C) and is part of AmeriCorps. The purpose of the program is to provide service in nonprofits, faith-based organizations, government departments and educational institutions in order to help meet local needs and to broaden the network of national service programs.

Program Requirements for SASSI Fellows

  • Completion of 300 hours of community service in one calendar year (average 10-15 hours a week), beginning Fall 2005.
  • Work with one main nonprofit organization of your choice (College Work Study placement with a nonprofit community organization) along with two one-hour a week rotations through other local organizations during each semester.
  • Keep a continually updated log of service hours.
  • Attendance at scheduled group meetings including orientation and evaluation meetings.
  • Participation in a Student Success Seminar through University College, Academic Advising, tutoring sessions, Mentor meetings with an assigned campus mentor, computer literacy and software training, and any other workshops deemed necessary by the Advisory Board.
  • Participation in reflection and evaluation activities.

Qualifications for the SASSI Fellowship

Participants must:

  • Be a first-generation college student and/or low-income as defined by FAFSA data interpreted by The University of Akron's Office of Financial Aid.
  • Be a new freshman student enrolled at The University of Akron in University College or Summit College.
  • Agree to participate in and complete all program requirements.
