Preparing for Academic Advising
Finding Your Academic Adviser
- Do you know your academic adviser? Your assigned adviser's contact information can be found by logging on to ZipLine, clicking on the "Students" tab, "Academics," then selecting "View My Advisor."
When to Visit your Academic Adviser
- When you want to discuss your academic progress.
- When you begin to experience academic difficulty.
- When you want to discuss problems that are affecting your academic performance.
- When you want to make changes to your schedule (add, drop, etc.).
- When you are considering changing your major or career goals.
- When you don't know where else to go for help.
Planning and Attending Your Academic Advisement Appointment
- Make an appointment. Contact your college for information on appointment procedures. Usually your adviser does not make his/her own appointments.
- Find out how long your appointment will last. Be prepared to stay the entire time.
- Meet with your adviser before the "big rush." Advisement appointments become difficult to obtain during registration periods and close to the beginning of semesters. Meet with your adviser as soon as the schedule of classes becomes available so that you are prepared to register as soon as your enrollment appointment is valid. - Put your questions in writing (because you will forget!).
- Would you like your adviser to assist you in choosing a major? Click here to view various UA majors and what you can do with a degree in that area.
- Check for holds (financial, parking, library, academic, etc.) that may prevent you from registering. Holds can be found by logging on to your ZipLine account, clicking on the "Students" tab to view the information listed under the title "Service Indicators and Holds."
- Prior to your advising appointment, think about your work schedule for next semester. Bring dates and times you are not available to take classes with you to your appointment.
- Know where your advising appointment is located and be on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will most likely have to reschedule your appointment.
- If you can not make an appointment, call to cancel 24 hours in advance, if possible, so that someone else can have your time.
- During the appointment, be courteous and turn off your cell phone.
- Be a willing and active participant. This appointment is for you, about you, and will be between you and your adviser. You must participate to get the most from your appointment.
- Walk-in advising is available in many departments for quick questions, signatures, pre-requisite checks, etc.
