Residence Life vs. Commuting to Campus

Students always ask, "Should I live on or off campus?" The answer is - "It depends." The following information may help you to make the decision which is best for you.

Residence Life 101

  • UA is home to more than 2,400 students residing in 13 residence halls.

  • Living on campus helps establish friendships and a campus connection on a faster time frame.

  • The Department of Residence Life and Housing provides supportive environments where students are surrounded by their peers.

  • Living/Learning Communities allow students to live with students who share similar interests or the same majors. Some Living/Learning Communities have an academic focus while others focus on students' leadership skills.

  • Residence Life and Housing supports students as they create communities that are safe and drug-free.

  • First-year students are required to reside in University residence halls for the duration of their first year at UA. Click here for more details and to view exemptions.

  • Residence Life and Housing boasts a variety of residence hall room styles. Click here to view room layouts and information.

  • UA's award-winning residence hall organizations, (Residence Hall Program Board (RHPB), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and Residence Hall Council (RHC)), are great ways to meet people and get involved!

Commuting to Campus

  • Keep in mind the residency restrictions described above. As a first-year student, you may be required to reside in the residence halls.

  • Commuter Central in the Student Union (1st floor) is dedicated to connecting commuters to the UA campus community.

  • Commuting allows students to reside at home in a supportive (and often cost-free!) environment.

  • Commuters have the same rights, responsibilities, and access to services on campus as do residence hall students.

  • Because UA is located in downtown Akron, the campus is easily accessible by car or bus.
