Preparing for Tests
General Suggestions
- Take time off work to study, if needed. Remember your priorities.
- Get plenty of sleep the night before a test.
- Set multiple alarm clocks the morning of a test.
- Eat breakfast.
- Arrive to class early. Often times the other students in class will be discussing the assigned material - you may pick up more information than you think.
- Be prepared. Bring extra pens, pencils, scratch paper, etc.
- Read the directions first.
- Take your time - it's not a race to see who can finish first.
- Re-read your responses before submitting your work.
Essay Tests
- If your professor provided sample test questions, write an essay at home to help you prepare.
- Outline your answer first.
- Re-read your response to make sure it makes sense.
Short Answer Tests
- Complete the questions you are sure about first, then return to the more difficult ones last.
- Note how much each question is worth - spend more time on the questions worth more points.
- Always write something down, even if you have no clue what the answer may be. Sometimes you get lucky!
Multiple Choice Tests
- Read every bullet before choosing the right answer.
- Cross off the choices that you know are wrong first. Work your way to the right answer through elimination.
- Don't overanalyze - your first instincts are often correct.
- When in doubt, make an educated guess.
Computer Based Tests
- Answer the questions you know first, skip others and return to them later in the test.
- Take your time - computer based tests are often not timed.
- If you have the opportunity to take the test more than once, DO IT! Take the test at the opening of the testing window and then again towards the middle/end of the testing window.
