Counseling Services

The Counseling, Testing and Career Center is a complete psychological services center at The University of Akron. The Center is part of Student Affairs and is located on Buchtel Avenue (Rooms 306 and 304) near the center of campus.

Who is it for?

Any student currently registered for credit courses or developmental courses may use the services of the Counseling, Testing and Career Center. (Full-time faculty and staff also may use the services for consultation or referral, once for personal and family concerns, and as often as required for University matters.)

Why go there?

Students visit the Counseling, Testing and Career Center for a variety of reasons. You might wish to seek help in deciding on a major and a career direction; in improving study skills or overcoming learning problems; in coping with a personal crisis; in dealing with a wide range of personal issues such as concerns about self-esteem, sexuality, ethnic identity, alcohol and drugs, family conflicts, or relationship issues.

Who are the professional staff?

The staff at the Counseling, Testing and Career Center includes psychologists, psychology interns, and advanced doctoral students in psychology. They represent a variety of theoretical orientations and specialties.

How can they help?

Many times in life people must face difficult situations. Problems can seem confusing and overwhelming. Sometimes choices appear so limited that every possible outcome feels like more discomfort and unhappiness. An objective professional can often help you during these times. The Counseling, Testing and Career Center provides a quiet place where you can discuss your concerns in private with an experienced professional.

Is it confidential?

All communication is held in strict confidence. All identifying information, including the fact that you have visited the Counseling, Testing and Career Center, may be released to others only at your written request. The only exception is the unusual situation in which there is clear danger to yourself or to others.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge to eligible students except for fees associated with LD testing, and nominal fees for career and psychological tests.

How do I make an appointment?

You may make an appointment for personal or career counseling by calling (330) 972-7082 or (330) 972-7083, or in person at Simmons Hall 306. Appointments for testing may be made by calling (330) 972-7084, or by coming to the testing service at Simmons Hall 304.

How soon can I be seen?

You can usually be seen for an intake session within several days of the first contact. If you request a particular counselor, you may have a longer wait. In case of emergency, you can be seen with a minimum of delay.

What happens in the intake session?

The counselor will obtain background information from you, assess your needs, determine the appropriateness of services at the Counseling, Testing and Career Center, assign you to a counselor, or make a referral to another service on or off campus.
