Department of Development College of Polymer Science & Polymer Engineering The Norman P. Auburn Scholarship in Polymer Science
This endowed scholarship was created by University of Akron President Emeritus Dr. Norman P. Auburn who was instrumental in establishing the polymer science academic and research activity at The University of Akron during his presidency, 1951-71. This annual award or awards should be made upon recommendation of the Dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The Deming E. Baker Memorial Scholarship in Polymer Science
This endowed fund was established at the request of Newton Baker in memory of his father, Deming E. Baker, Class of 1925. It establishes stipends for students in the Department of Polymer Science. Selection of the recipients is made by the head of the department with preference given to students demonstrating scholarship, financial need, and enthusiasm for the field. Recipients of this scholarship must be American citizens.
The Bridgestone/Firestone Tire & Rubber Company Fellowship
This fellowship is awarded to a graduate student in polymer science. It is open to graduates of accredited American colleges and universities.
The BSMPE Scholarship
The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering and the College of Engineering established a joint scholarship on April 1, 1997 to fund the newly-initiated BSMPE (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Polymer Engineering) program. To ensure the program's success, this scholarship program is established to offer annual undergraduate awards as incentive to pursue a graduate polymer degree track. Prospective students must apply through the University's financial aid office by May 1 annually.
The Dow Chemical Company Fellowship in Polymer Engineering
Provided for the first time in 1978, this grant funds one graduate student in the Department of Polymer Engineering. Dow Chemical has no other restriction on selection of recipient of funds. Selection will be made by the director of the department and approved by the dean. The funded student will be obliged to submit an annual report of activities to Dow at the conclusion of the academic year.
The DuPont Grant
This grant, awarded since 1977 as part of DuPont’s Aid-to-Education program for maintaining excellence in U.S. research and education in science and engineering, is being used by the Department of Polymer Science to fund a fellowship or other form of support for the department’s graduate research program.
The Eastman Chemical Company Enhancement Scholarship
The Eastman Chemical Company is a leading international chemical company that produces more than 400 chemicals, fibers, and plastics. Founded in 1920 in Kingsport, Tennessee, as a unit of Eastman Kodak Company, Eastman Chemical Company is now an independent, publicly held company. Headquartered in Kingsport, Eastman employs 16,100 people in more than 30 countries with regional headquarters in Kingsport; The Hague, Netherlands; Singapore; and Coral Gables, Florida.
The Eastman Chemical Company Enhancement Scholarship was established in support of The University of Akron College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering's Department of Polymer Science's ongoing effort to attract top incoming students in polymer science. The annual award will be presented to the top polymer science freshman as selected by the Department of Polymer Science.
The Raymond C. Firestone Bequest
The University of Akron Foundation was the recipient of a gift in 1995 from the estate of Raymond C. Firestone, former Chairman of The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and son of its founder Harvey S. Firestone. Interest from the bequest is used to fund the maintenance and acquisition of scientific and research equipment for the University's College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Distribution of such funds are at the discretion of the Dean of the college.
The Paul J. Flory Memorial Fellowship
This fellowship funded through the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society supports full-time doctoral-level education and research at a North American university. This fellowship shall be renewable for up to two additional years provided the candidate has demonstrated potential for originality and creativity. Applications should be submitted by May 1 to the director of the rubber division.
The Michael and Pauline Forster Scholarship Fund
This scholarship, established in memory of Michael and Pauline Forster by their children, seeks to provide financial support to students in the physical sciences and School of Nursing. Michael Forster was a Ph.D. in physics (Notre Dame, 1951) specializing in polymer research. Pauline Forster was an R.N. (Meyer Memorial, 1945) who worked in the areas of public health, newborn nursery and surgical medicine.
Awarded on a bi-annual basis, The Michael and Pauline Forster Scholarship is to provide two years' financial support to a student in one of the polymer disciplines, alternating with two years' support for a student in the College of Nursing. Award selection is to be made by those Colleges, in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Aid, on the basis of financial need and academic merit.
The George Clinton and Julia Lucille Fouts Endowed Scholarship Fund
The George Clinton and Julia Lucille Fouts Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 by Mrs. Julia Lucille Fouts.
The purpose of the George Clinton and Julia Lucille Fouts Endowed Scholarship Fund is to provide full tuition assistance, including books and fees, yearly to a total of two students at The University of Akron. One student is to be enrolled in the College of Engineering and one in the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
Each of the two scholarship recipients must be enrolled full-time, have demonstrated financial need, and have a G.P.A. of at least 3.0. The scholarship shall be renewable for the students until graduation, provided that they maintain eligibility as described above. Students shall be selected by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Any additional monies generated yearly by the endowment are to be split between the two Colleges and used at the discretion of the Deans.
The GenCorp Foundation Endowed Equipment Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1995 with a $1 million gift to the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Interest from the endowment will be used to seek equipment matching funds, enabling the colleges' faculty to remain competitive in research grant submissions. Distribution of the earnings is at the discretion of the Dean of the College. The gift culminates years of cooperation between GenCorp Inc., who made the funds available, and The University of Akron.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Fellowship
This fellowship is awarded to a graduate student in polymer science. It is open to graduates of accredited American colleges and universities.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Summer Internship Program
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company sponsors the Summer Internship Program to encourage talented undergraduate students in their pursuit of further study in the polymer field. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company maintains its position as an industry leader through its strong focus on advanced technology. In a continuing partnership with The University of Akron's College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, Goodyear provides funding for four students to visit campus each summer to pursue independent research projects supervised by a College faculty member.
G. Maxine Harwood and H. James Harwood Endowed Scholarship in Polymer Science
This endowed scholarship was established in 1996 in honor of G. Maxine Harwood and Professor H. James Harwood in recognition of their 65th birthdays. It was established to encourage third or fourth year undergraduate students in the sciences at The University of Akron to pursue study in Polymer Science. Funds to support this scholarship are administered by the Department of Polymer Science; applicants must demonstrate their commitment to pursue continued studies in polymer science to their respective department heads and subsequently be recommended to the Chair of the Department of Polymer Science by April 1st. Funds for this award were provided by Professor Harwood's former students, corporate associates and friends.
The Robert G. Hills Scholarship in Polymer Engineering
The Robert G. Hills Scholarship in Polymer Engineering was created in 2003 to encourage a deserving student with financial need. The Hills Scholarship was established by Mrs. Martha Hills and family in honor of Robert Hills’ 75th birthday.
For over 40 years, Mr. Hills has been devoted to the plastics industry. First at NRM Corp. and later at two companies he founded: PARAMCO and Summit Machinery Sales. An alumnus of the University, Mr. Hills is a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers, both their local and national chapters. He is a member of the Plastic Pioneers Association as well. For his dedication to the plastics industry, Mr. Hills is recognized on the Wall of Honor in the Goodyear Polymer Center on the University of Akron campus.
The Robert G. Hills Scholarship in Polymer Engineering shall be awarded to a deserving student demonstrating financial need and studying in the Department of Polymer Engineering. The final selection is to be made by the chair of the department in conjunction with the University’s office of financial aid.
ICI Lectures in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
ICI Paints and its subsidiary, the Glidden Company, established the ICI Lecture Series within the Department of Polymer Science. Lectures are open to the scientific public. The donor's intent is to bring prominent UA polymer graduates back to campus as well as ICI scientists and engineers to collaborate in a one-day lecture series/symposium on the science and engineering of polymers, coatings, solutions, and emulsions.
The Lord Corporation Graduate Fellowships
As part of graduate research provided for the first time in 1979 by the Lord Corporation of Erie, Pennsylvania, graduate research fellowships are funded annually in the Department of Polymer Science.
The Victor I. Montenyohl Scholarships
This scholarship fund for advanced study was established in memory of Victor I. Montenyohl in recognition of his devotion to the rubber industry and his belief that The University of Akron offers a unique opportunity for rubber research. The income from this fund is awarded to a student well-qualified and interested in the field of rubber chemistry.
The Maurice Morton Fund for Graduate Studies
This fund was established in 1979 by former students and friends in memory of Dr. Maurice Morton, who was regents’ professor emeritus of polymer chemistry and the first director of the Institute of Polymer Science. It provides support for graduate study and research in polymer science in the form of the Maurice Morton Award. This prize is given annually to the student with the highest GPA in the first-year core courses in the Department of Polymer Science. Selection is made by the faculty of the Department of Polymer Science.
The Ohio Rubber Group Graduate Student Award
The Ohio Rubber Group (ORG) has a long tradition of supporting The University of Akron. The organization is concerned about the shortage of polymer scientists and polymer engineers in northeast Ohio and nationally, and has adopted a proactive, revised strategy to help to confront this need and encourage local and state employment within the rubber industry.
The Ohio Rubber Group Graduate Student Award will provide for up to four (4) student awards of $2,000 per academic year. A deserving student from either Polymer Science or Polymer Engineering will be selected. To qualify, students must be full-time doctoral students in their third year of study, or beyond, with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to U.S. residents or permanent residents. An applicant is required to submit with the application, an official transcript, current vita, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the student’s academic performance and research experience and interest, as well as a one-page essay indicating why he or she should be selected to receive an ORG award and describing his or her research. The recipients of the ORG award are encouraged to attend local ORG technical meetings and may be asked to share their research with the members. Award winners will be selected by the Ohio Rubber Group with assistance from the University of Akron’s College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The Phillips Petroleum Company Research Fellowship
This fellowship, funded annually since 1960, is awarded to a graduate student in polymer science.
The Irja and Aleksander Piirma Fellowship in Polymer Science
The Irja and Aleksander Piirma Fellowship in Polymer Science provides annual support to a graduate student in the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering’s Department of Polymer Science. Preferential consideration will be given to a student whose work is in the area of biopolymers. The recipient of the Piirma Fellowship will be selected by the Department of Polymer Science Award Committee. It is the donors’ preference that the funds be used to fund one student.
Polymer Engineering Award Fund
The Polymer Engineering Award Fund was established in 2001. The Fund exists to Polymer recruit and retain talented polymer engineering Masters and Ph.D. candidates studying under the tutelage of Dr. Sadhad C. Jana.
The Richard W. Sicka Fellowship in Polymer Science
The Richard W. Sicka Fellowship in Polymer Science was established June 1, 1993, to support polymer science students in financial need. Support is restricted to polymer science students of, preferably, international extraction; emphasis would be placed upon Ukrainian, Croatian, Polish, German, Chinese, and Japanese heritage. The fellowship recipients will be determined by the faculty within the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering and administered by the Department of Polymer Science.
The Ticona Excellence in Polymer Science/Engineering Plastics Student Awards
The Ticona Company of Summit, New Jersey, will award up to four awards per student demonstrating outstanding achievement in academics, research, and other areas related to polymer science or polymer engineering. Selection is determined by the faculty of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Faculty within the college are requested to submit their selection (resume, research interests, description of academic achievement [GPA], letter(s) of recommendation, etc.) annually by April 1 to the dean’s office. It is not necessary that the recipient be a U.S. citizen. The recipient may be at any level of study.
The Treadgold Polymer Science Awards in Rubber Reinforcement
Established in 1970 by the children and grandchildren of Elodie and Anthony Galen Treadgold in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary, this endowed account’s funds are used by the Department of Polymer Science to fund first?year summer fellowships. Awards are for individuals whose interests are primarily directed toward the application and/or function of rubber reinforcement. No further restrictions apply.
The Richard L. Waldman, Jr. Scholarship
The Richard L. Waldman, Jr. Scholarship was established in memory of Richard L. Waldman, Jr. by his brother William C. Waldman in 1989. Richard Waldman was a respected community leader, ingenious businessman as evidenced by his contributions as vice president of the A. Schulman Company, and beloved by his family. The Scholarship recognizes Richard Waldman's commitment and contributions to the polymer industry by providing annual awards of at least $2,500 each to four undergraduate students majoring in chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, or mechanical polymer engineering. The students must be in pursuit of a career in the polymer industry and display an interest in the polymer industry, in keeping with the spirit of Richard Waldman. The award will be made by the scholarship committee of the Department of Polymer Science in conjunction with the Department of Financial Aid.
The Hoyt M. and Merdith Wells Graduate Fellowship in Polymer Science
The Hoyt M. and Merdith Wells Graduate Fellowship in Polymer Science provides for an outstanding College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering student, who has achieved academic excellence and is pursuing a graduate degree in Polymer Science. The student must be a U.S. citizen. These funds will be used to offset the cost of books, student travel to technical meetings, and summer support for student living expenses. This scholarship is funded by Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Wells, friends of The University of Akron and members of the President’s Club of the John R. Buchtel Society. Mr. and Mrs. Wells are longtime members of the Akron Community and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company family. Mr. Wells' career with Goodyear featured involvement in many facets of the company's business and culminated in his serving as president, chief operating officer, and vice chairman of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Mr. Wells serves as president of The University of Akron Foundation and chairman of the College of Engineering Advancement Council. The Dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering and the University Scholarship Committee will select the recipient of this scholarship. |
