Department of Development Wayne College William T. Baker Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Mr. William T. Baker and his family to financially assist West Holmes High School graduates attending the Holmes County Higher Education Center. Additionally, eligible students must declare a financial need and live in Holmes County. The award may be used for tuition, fees and textbooks.
Carol M. Briggs Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2003 by David M. and Carol M. Briggs. Eligible students must be full-time and declare a financial need. The award will be given annually to qualifying Wayne College students.
The Anita Degnan Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Anita Degnan Memorial Endowed Scholarship is an endowed fund established to encourage recipients to pursue a college education as a means to further their personal and professional aspirations. Candidates are preferred to be graduates of Wooster High School, the Wayne County Career Center, or Smithville Boys Village who are attending The University of Akron Wayne College. However, any graduate of a Wayne County school may be considered for this scholarship. They must be full time students demonstrating academic promise and financial need. Candidates are eligible for renewed scholarship assistance provided they remain full time students at The University of Akron Wayne College and meet the scholarship requirements. It is the donor’s intention for this scholarship to provide significant annual support for no more than four recipients. Funds will be awarded by the dean of The University of Akron Wayne College and the University’s financial aid office to meet the cost of tuition, books, and fees.
Denco Marketing Company Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Mr. Dennis Schlabach and the Denco Marketing Company to financially assist Holmes County residents attending the Holmes County Higher Education Center and Wayne College. Eligible students must declare a financial need. The award may be used for credit course tuition, fees and textbooks. The Denco Marketing Company of Millersburg, Ohio is known for fast courteous service, supplying the Garage Door and Gate Industry with quality products since 1966.
Founders Scholarships
The University of Akron Wayne College Founders Scholarships were established in 1998 to recognize the vital link between the College and its past and to increase access to higher education. The scholarships are awarded to the following categories: recent high school graduates, career center graduates, part-time students, continuing students and those providing financial need. Recipients of the $500 and $1,000 awards will be selected by the Founders Society, an organization comprised of early supporters of the College.
Founders Scholarships – GED Category
This new category of Founders Scholarships was created by the College in 2001 to recognize students who have received exceptional test scores on the General Education Development exam. This $1,000 scholarship will be given to two students who demonstrate academic promise and are planning on attending Wayne College for a minimum of six credits per semester. The scholarship is renewable for a second year provided the student remains at least halftime at Wayne College and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above.
The Glendora Health Care Center Scholarship for Nursing
This scholarship is provided by the Glendora Health Care System to assist Wayne College Nursing students that are residents of Wayne County. Preference is given to students pursuing careers in the profession of nursing. Additionally, prospective recipients must evidence that they are good community citizens possessing positive leadership qualities. Award decisions for the Glendora Health Care Center Scholarship will be determined by the Wayne College representative or committee.
Great Start Book Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2002 by Wayne College librarian, Elys Kettling based on the following rationale: While many traditional scholarships cover the cost of a student’s college tuition, few cover the cost of the textbooks required for those courses. For financially-challenged students to have the best opportunity for academic success, they need all their textbooks at hand for the first day of class. Beginning with the Fall of 2003 this scholarship will provide assistance for at least one Wayne College student each semester (Fall and Spring), taking at least 6 credit hours. The scholarship is a one-time award per student and may be up to $300 toward the purchase of that semester’s textbooks from the Wayne College Bookstore. Applicant must have a demonstrated financial need and provide a statement (up to 300 words) indicating the real value of this scholarship award. Scholarship recipients are to be determined by the Wayne College Financial Aid Specialist and his/her designee(s).
The Scott D. Hagen Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1984 by family and coworkers in memory of Scott D. Hagen, associate professor of biology at Wayne College. This scholarship is awarded to deserving science students attending the college. Selection of recipients is made by a college faculty committee.
The Hecker-Nussbaum Academic Achievement Scholarship
Established in 1995 from bequests given to Wayne College from Mary Hecker and Etelka Nussbaum. This scholarship is given to full time Wayne College freshmen not receiving any other University scholarship. Recipients are incoming freshmen with an ACT composite of 21 and higher and with a high school GPA between 3.0 and 3.5.
The Hecker-Nussbaum Academic Opportunity Grant
The Hecker-Nussbaum Academic Opportunity Grant is designated for new part time Wayne College students who plan to enroll in 3-6 credits per semester. Students must submit an application and fulfill all skills assessment before applying. This grant is based on aid.
John and Virginia Kunkle Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Kay Stephan and John F. Kunkle in memory of their beloved parents. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 15 credit hours at Wayne College with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, eligible students must declare a financial need. The award will be given annually to qualifying Wayne College students from Summit or Stark counties with the coursework areas of business, office administration, or health care office.
The Chuck Nicholson’s Auto Superstore Scholarship
This non-endowed scholarship was established in 2005 by Chuck Nicholson’s Auto Superstore to financially assist West Holmes High School graduates attending the Holmes County Higher Education Center and Wayne College. Additionally, eligible students must declare a financial need and reside in Holmes County. The award may be used for tuition, fees and textbooks. Chuck Nicholson’s Auto Superstore is a family owned and operated business offering the finest new and used vehicles backed by award winning service.
The Orrville Campus Foundation Grant for Wayne College
For students attending Wayne College, the Orrville Campus Foundation provides grants which pay half of the tuition per semester. To qualify for these grants, a student must be officially admitted as a full time student at Wayne. Determination of recipients is based upon individual financial need.
The Marian Rothstein Memorial Scholarship, Wayne College
This scholarship was established in 1996 by the family of Marian Rothstein in tribute to her dedication to nursing. As an idealistic young person, Ms. Rothstein left home against the wishes of her father to pursue the dream of a career in nursing. She was a graduate of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, at CWRU. After completing her studies she served in WWII, primarily in the Pacific Theater, and traveled extensively. She used her skill in nursing to not only assist patients but as a means to personal growth and satisfaction.
It is the family's intention that this scholarship will provide support for generations of students who will use their nursing education in a manner similar to Ms. Rothstein. This education will enable them not only to serve the needy but also will help unlock their dreams for the future. The scholarship is to be awarded without regard to race, religion or gender to graduates of Wooster High School attending the nursing program at The University of Akron Wayne College. An incoming nursing student is to receive an outright award of $2,000 and must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. to be eligible for continuing assistance.
The Paul H. Smucker Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by the family of Paul H. Smucker. Paul H. Smucker was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the J. M. Smucker Company and under Paul’s guidance, the Company grew from a small, regional jam and jelly manufacturer to one of international scope. The award will be made yearly to students at Wayne College. Qualified students must be from the Wayne County area, and working towards an associates, bachelor, or masters degree at Wayne College. Selection of the student will be based on need, academics, and community service. The recipient will be chosen by a representative from the J. M. Smucker Company, and a representative from Wayne College.
The Richard E. Steimel Memorial Scholarship
This non-endowed scholarship was established in 2006 by Samuel M. & Ronda Steimel and Beth & Marcus Ladrach in memory of their beloved father. Richard E. Steimel highly valued education. He was the first in his family to go to college. During the 1940’s while attending Ohio State University, he worked hard at many part-time jobs to financially provide for his education. Mr. Steimel owned the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury auto dealership in Millersburg for 35 years. He began the business in 1952, then the youngest owner of a Ford Motor Company dealership in the nation. Mr. Steimel was also involved in the creation of many other local businesses and was known as a promoter of Holmes County and the Village of Millersburg.
This scholarship will financially assist students attending Wayne College and its Holmes County Higher Education Center. Eligible students must demonstrate a financial need and reside in Holmes County. The award may be used for tuition, fees and textbooks. This scholarship encourages Holmes County residents to pursue academic goals and honors Mr. Steimel’s commitment to education and the community.
The Craig Alan Swope Memorial Scholarship
This non-endowed scholarship was established in 2007 by Philip and Karen Swope in loving memory of their son, Craig Alan Swope, who was a junior in high school at the time of his death from an auto accident. This scholarship has two parts. It is a memorial to their son and it is a commitment to help children with learning disabilities. Resulting from a family experience, Mr. and Mrs. Swope have a genuine care to see that children with special needs in the classroom receive the help they require. Because of that desire, this scholarship was established to financially assist students in the Wayne College Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paraprofessional Education. Individuals completing this program will provide instructional support and personal care in the classroom to children with disabilities. Mr. and Mrs. Swope believe that through this scholarship, the paraprofessionals will help facilitate interventions to detect disabilities earlier and provide essential additional help. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must demonstrate financial need. The award may be used for tuition, fees and textbooks. The scholarship is renewable through application for a second year. It is Mr. and Mrs. Swope’s preference to help students through both years of the degree program.
Mike and Cindy Taylor Textbook Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Michael K. and Cynthia A. Taylor, to assist Wayne College and its Holmes County Higher Education Center students in the purchase of textbooks for their classes. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor have been respected leaders in the community and strong supporters of access to higher education in Holmes County. This scholarship will provide financial assistance for textbook purchases at the Wayne College Bookstore. Eligible students must be a Holmes County resident and enrolled at the Center in Millersburg or Orrville Campus.
The Walkerly Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 by Helen and Kenneth Walkerly in loving memory of Helen’s step-son, Paul Snodgrass, and Kenneth’s brothers, Gary and Bruce. Eligible recipients are Wayne College Social Services Technology 2 + 2 students that have declared Social Services Technology 2 + 2 as a major and have successfully completed a minimum of 17 credit hours of Social Services Technology/Social Work courses which must include Introduction to Social Welfare and Social Service Techniques I and II. Additionally, eligible students must declare a financial need. It is the Walkerly’s intention that this scholarship provide at least two scholarships per year to students in the program.
Wayne College Achievement Scholarship for Textbooks
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Dr. Janet Barnett Minc, Professor of English, to assist continuing Wayne College students in their purchase of textbooks for their classes. The expense of textbooks has become a significant expense for college students, and the purpose of this scholarship is to support Wayne College students’ educational goals by enabling them to have the necessary resources for their classes. Beginning in the fall of 2006 this scholarship will provide $250 for textbook purchases at the Wayne College bookstore for one student per academic year. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time, a second-year Wayne College student, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, and demonstrate a financial need.
Wayne College Community Scholarships
These scholarships were created in 2001 to bridge the gap between financial aid and a family’s own resources to pay for college. Up to ten scholarships for $1,000 each will be awarded to new and continuing students attending Wayne College taking a minimum of six credits. The awards will be based upon academic achievement and financial need. Applicants for this award must be ineligible for federal/state grants as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference will be given to applicants residing in the College’s service area of Medina, Wayne and Holmes counties.
The Will-Burt Scholarship
This annual $1,000 scholarship is designated in support of deserving and needy full-time students with a GPA of 2.00 or above. While there is a preference for support of children of employees of the company, support is not limited in this way. Award decisions will be made each year by a representative of the College and a representative of the company
