Scholarships for Excellence General Scholarships

The Samuel C. Andress Scholarship Fund
The Samuel C. Andress Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 by Mrs. Dorothy Culver. Mr. Andress was born in Hayesville, Ohio, on June 27, 1906, and served in the United States Navy. During his life, Mr. Andress was involved in many community and civic organizations. Mr. Andress was a member of the Ohio Bar, U.S. District Court of Ohio, U.S. Court of Appeals, and Sixth Circuit practicing probate law and business law. His firm, Roetzel & Andress, is among Northeast Ohio's most distinguished and respected legal practices. Mrs. Culver, in establishing The Samuel C. Andress Scholarship fund, described her wish to pay tribute to Mr. Andress' help to her family. Mr. Andress offered competent and concerned legal assistance to Mrs. Culver's family over many decades. His legal skills and knowledge made a difference during several generations of the Culver Family. The Samuel C. Andress Scholarship(s) is to be given to students enrolled at The University of Akron in honor of Mr. Andress. They will be known as the Andress Scholars.

The Fredrick J. and Dorothy Williams Culver Scholarship for Excellence
The Fredrick J. and Dorothy Williams Culver Scholarship For Excellence was established as an endowed scholarship in 1999 to honor Fredrick J. and Dorothy Williams Culver for their commitment to The University of Akron. This scholarship recognizes their student years at the University when Fred studied engineering and Dorothy majored in math and English. The Culvers were married in 1937, the year Dorothy graduated from The University of Akron.

The scholarship fund is to be merit based and to be used to attract and retain undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishments, a superior personal character and show promise of becoming an exemplary citizen. This scholarship is to be need-based and will support the Scholarships for Excellence program, an initiative to recruit academically talented students to The University of Akron.

The Winfred E. Fouse Endowed Scholarship Fund
Winfred E. Fouse, a native of Akron, was a co-founder of the General Tire and Rubber Company. He was the first Secretary of the company from its founding in 1915 and played a leading role in its growth and expansion. At various times he also served as Vice President and Treasurer, and for many years was a member of the Board of Directors. He retired from the company in 1958. At the request of son, Eugene K. Fouse, BSE, 1926, this scholarship fund is to be awarded as part of the Scholarships for Excellence Program, as long as it remains in existence and a priority for The University of Akron. Awards are to be merit based and used to attract and retain undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishments, have superior personal character and show promise of becoming exemplary citizens. The students may continue to receive these awards throughout their undergraduate years provided they continue to demonstrate academic accomplishments and the high ideals required by the Scholarships for Excellence program. Initial selection and continuation shall be at the discretion of The University of Akron Scholarship Committee.

The Russell and Helen Workinger Franks Scholarship for Excellence
The Russell and Helen Workinger Franks Scholarship For Excellence was established by Miss Pauline Franks, Professor Emeritus of Bibliography, in memory of her parents. The scholarships will be awarded to deserving graduates of Green High School who are enrolled at The University of Akron who meet The University of Akron’s qualifications for Scholarships For Excellence.

The William B. and Sarah A. Huff Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1997, The William B. and Sarah A. Huff Endowed Scholarship provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students attending The University of Akron. Mr. William Boyd Huff studied engineering and art at the University and became an accomplished Akron area architect. His wife, Sarah, received a bachelors in home economics in 1928 from The University of Akron and was a member of Delta Gamma. Mr. Huff designed several University buildings including Kolbe Hall and the business/law building, and was active in many community activities.

The Richard L. and Elisabeth A. Hurley Scholarship for Excellence
Established in 2000, The Richard L. and Elisabeth A. Hurley Scholarship for Excellence provides tuition assistance for students involved in The Bliss Institute programs at The University of Akron. Mr. and Mrs. Hurley believe that an understanding of the functioning of our government and its constitution are fundamental to our rights and responsibilities as citizens. Richard Hurley received a B.A. in Economics from The University of Akron in 1947. Mr. Hurley was president of W. L. Tucker Supply Company. Mr. and Mrs. Hurley are active in both social and civic organizations. This scholarship will be used for outstanding undergraduate students associated with The Bliss Institute. Recipients will be chosen by the Financial Aid Committee of The University of Akron.

The Dr. William H. and Irene B. Jobe Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1997 by Morris B. Jobe and his wife, Maxine G. in loving memory of Mr. Jobe's parents, the Dr. William H. and Irene B. Jobe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides full-academic assistance for meritorious undergraduate students attending The University of Akron.

The scholarship pays tribute to Dr. Jobe, an accomplished chiropractor and man of great integrity and compassion, who generously served his family, community and profession. Dr. Jobe firmly believed in college education for men and women and personally promoted the value of continuing education by furthering his education while in practice. Through his continuing studies and pioneering work in electronic diagnostics he was granted membership in the National Medical Society and later founded and became president of the Standard College of Chiropractic.

During the days of the depression, the Jobe family learned the value of family sacrifice and the award provided by a father's great support and encouragement. Three children completed degrees in higher education. Louise Jobe Marsh, Kathryn Jobe Judson and Morris B. Jobe graduated from The University of Akron, took postgraduate studies, and both daughters earned Masters' degrees. Irene Jobe received a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1916. It is the hope of the Jobe family that The William H. and Irene B. Jobe Endowed Scholarship Fund helps others to secure a college education and enjoy the benefits that have accrued from their education.

The George S. Ketter Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1972 by Mrs. George S. Ketter in memory of her late husband and endowed by her upon her death in 1995. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee based on financial need and satisfactory academic progress. Preference is given to freshman or sophomore students in electrical engineering.

The Maurice A. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1997 by the Knight Family, The Maurice A. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund is a testament to academic excellence, civic responsibility and the American Dream. This noble legacy was established by Dr. Charles M. Knight (1848-1941), founder of the University's chemistry studies, whose devotion to rubber chemistry led to the University's world stature in polymer science. His son, Maurice A. Knight, carried his father's legacy into a new industrial era. Today, The Maurice A. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund ensures that the Knight legacy will eternally thrive at The University of Akron, as students for generations to come will be able to prepare their own American Dream.

The Will H. (Billie) Lipscombe Scholarship
This Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1998 by one of Ms. Lipscombe's appreciative former students, Eugene H. Heston. Ms. Lipscombe was a mathematics instructor for students majoring in the science and technology areas at The University of Akron from 1921 to 1962. She represents true dedication to quality academic instruction, always holding her students to the same high standards of excellence she expected of herself. This scholarship is to be awarded as part of the Scholarships for Excellence program, which brings academically talented students to The University of Akron in any degree program.

The Dr. Marion A. Ruebel Scholarship for Excellence
The Dr. Marion A. Ruebel Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1999 recognizing Dr. Ruebel’s distinguished career at The University of Akron. A native of Mason, Iowa, Dr. Ruebel joined the University in 1970 as an assistant professor of secondary education. In a career that spanned over three decades, Dr. Ruebel served as assistant dean of the College of Education, executive assistant to the president, interim senior vice president and provost, acting vice president of student support services, director of alumni affairs and government relations, and as the University’s 14th president from 1996 to 1999.

The Andrew and Jane H. Takas Scholarship for Excellence
The Andrew and Jane H. Takas Scholarship for Excellence was created through the generosity of Andrew and Jane H. Takas. This Scholarship for Excellence will be awarded to an outstanding entering freshman whose scholastic achievements reflect both the character of the student as well as the high academic standards established at The University of Akron. The recipient of the Takas Scholarship for Excellence will have a minimum grade point average of 3.50; must be among the upper ten percent of his high school class; and have an ACT score of not less than 26, or an SAT score of not less than 1100.

The Charles S. Tucker Family Scholarship
Charles S. Tucker, Jr. came to Akron, Ohio in 1916 with his parents Charles S. Tucker and Etta Routh Tucker and his sister Margaret Routh Tucker. The family lived on North Hill until both Margaret and Charles Jr. graduated from The University of Akron in 1932 and 1935 respectively. Margaret pursued a life long career as librarian at North High School finally assisting The Board of Education by designing libraries in the late 1960's for other Akron high schools. Charles Jr., a member of Lone Star Fraternity, retired from Bridgestone/Firestone in 1977 as a Division Controller. The family is most appreciative of the educations the University provided Margaret and Charles Jr. and, therefore, Charles Jr. has established this scholarship to benefit future generations of students.

The Palmer W. Wardman Endowed Fund
This fund was established through a testamentary gift from Palmer W. Wardman ’33. Mr. Wardman was raised in the North Hill area of Akron and following graduation took a position with the State Department. He served in many countries around the world, including Iran and several African states. After retirement, Mr. Wardman returned to the Akron area to be with friends and his sister, Catherine. His endowed fund is established for the unrestricted support of The University of Akron and will initially be used for the Scholarships for Excellence program.

The Gary B. and Pamela S. Williams Endowed Scholarship for Gifted Students
The Gary B. and Pamela S. Williams Endowed Scholarship for Gifted Students was established in 1986 to provide a student of achievement and promise sufficient funds for tuition, fees, books and living expenses. This scholastic award would permit the student to fully engage in scholarship and intellectual pursuits, as well as extracurricular student activities. Dr. and Mrs. Williams each received their undergraduate degree from The University of Akron. They had an interest in providing meritorious educational opportunity for incoming undergraduate students.

The Robert O. and Gwen L. Williamson Scholarship for Excellence
This Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1998 by Robert O. and Gwen L. Williamson. Mr. Williamson graduated from the University in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a commission as a second lieutenant, having been a member of R.O.T.C. He joined Burger Iron after graduation, but was called to serve his country in World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the 102nd Division, assigned to the ETO. Captain Williamson returned to Burger Iron, served in various capacities and in 1966 was elected president. A member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Mr. Williamson also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Firestone Bank and Akron Equipment Company. He was recognized by the University for his many achievements with an Alumni Honor Award in 1980. This scholarship is to be awarded as part of the Scholarship for Excellence program for students at The University of Akron College of Engineering.

The Dr. Arthur M. Young Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Arthur M. Young (June 12, 1900 to January 9, 1998) at an early age had a singular faith and commitment to education and scholarly pursuits. Entrusted with several scholarships, he excelled in studies at Harvard University where he completed three degrees: Bachelor of Arts in 1922, Master of Arts in 1923 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1930. At Harvard, he received the prestigious Albert and Anna Howard Fellow and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Young obtained his first teaching appointment at the University of Virginia, and later came to The University of Akron. He became an accomplished scholar and teacher of English, Greek, and the classics, gaining the respect of his colleagues and students.

Dr. Young’s wit and zest for learning touched thousands of students over his 40 years of teaching service. In 1972 he retired as professor of classics and head of the classics department at the University of Pittsburgh, but continued his yearly pilgrimage to some parts of the classical world. He continued his teaching at the American School in Athens, Greece. His extensive travels and research in classical learning and archeology lead to several books, including: Troy and Her Legend (1948), Legend Builder of the West (1958), The Voice That Speaketh Clear (1957), and Echoes of Two Cultures (1964).

The Robert E. Young Endowed Scholarship
Mr. Robert E. Young was the great-grandson of Allen Carlton, a Universalist scholar who collaborated with John R. Buchtel to found Buchtel College. Mr. Young has provided a bequest to The University of Akron, which will be used to establish a Scholarship for Excellence. It was Mr. Young's intention his support would be used to bring exceptional students to the University.

Scholarships for Excellence in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences

The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence
The Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences.

The Donald E. Carter, Sr. Scholarship for Excellence
This scholarship was established in 1998 by Donald E. Carter, Sr. ’36, a graduate of the Chemistry Department. Donald E. Carter used his chemistry degree during his professional career at Union Carbide. Mr. Carter’s passion, however, is for paleontology and the study of dinosaurs. Mr. Carter spent time following his retirement studying geology, and went on several pale-ontological digs where he made several notable discoveries. The Donald E. Carter, Sr. Scholarship for Excellence is to be used for a student enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences in the physical sciences at The University of Akron. The award is to be presented without regard to financial need. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in accordance with the above description.

The Robert F. Harris and Lucille S. Harris Scholarship Fund in History
Established in 1985 by Robert F. Harris, Class of 1928, and his wife, Lucille S. Harris, both of whom have maintained a lifelong interest in history, this endowed scholarship fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduates in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences who are majoring in history. Selection of the recipients is determined by the head of the Department of History in coordination with the director of student financial aid.

The Dr. John Samuel Phillipson, Jr. Scholarship Fund
The Dr. John Samuel Phillipson, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established through a gift from the estate of Dr. John Phillipson (1917-1995). Dr. Phillipson taught English for 39 years, 25 of those at The University of Akron. A good deal of his life's work was the study of author Thomas Wolfe. As a scholar of 18th century English literature, he was drawn by this 20th century author's vivid romanticism. He founded The Thomas Wolfe Review in 1977 which provided the impetus of the creation of The Thomas Wolfe Society. The Thomas Wolfe Review, an international journal, was funded by the English Department of The University of Akron. His love of literature was matched by his great love of travel. This merit scholarship serves as a tribute to Dr. Phillipson's unwavering devotion to students and the field of English.

This endowed scholarship will be awarded to a meritorious student enrolled full-time in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences' Department of English, as part of the Scholarships for Excellence program.

Scholarships for Excellence in the College of Business Administration

The Joyce Wortman Barnett Endowed International Business Scholarship
Originally established in 1996, the scholarship was created by James W. Barnett in memory of his late wife, Joyce Wortman Barnett. Born and raised in Akron, Joyce Wortman graduated with a liberal arts degree from the prestigious Stephens College, the second oldest women’s college in the country located in Columbia, Missouri. Upon returning to Akron, Miss Wortman attended The University of Akron for two years where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She married James W. Barnett in 1952 and settled into the role of loving mother to three children and devoted wife of a Goodyear executive whose career moved the family frequently. This scholarship shall serve as a tribute to Mrs. Barnett’s belief in important role of higher education in the lives of aspiring young women.

It is Mr. Barnett’s intention that the scholarship will annually fund six (6) scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each for young women majoring in International Business. These distribution parameters may be subject to change at Mr. Barnett’s discretion as the endowment grows and tuition costs change. Selection of the recipients will be made by the director of the Institute for Global Business in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. Consideration of recipients will focus on academic standing as well as extracurricular activities, community involvement, leadership, and character. On a selected basis, the Joyce Wortman Barnett Scholarship can be awarded to other meritorious candidates.

The College of Business Administration Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence
The Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Business Administration. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the College of Business Administration. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Business Administration.

The College of Business Administration Student Diversity Scholarship for Excellence
The College of Business Administration Student Diversity Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1996 to provide a full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Business Administration. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary minority students into the College of Business Administration. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Business Administration.

The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence
in Finance

The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Finance was created in 1998 by a grant from the Kenneth L. Calhoun Charitable Trust. Mr. Calhoun, a stranger to many, was a salesman for The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. While traveling throughout the U.S.A. leasing tires to bus, truck and taxicab fleets, Calhoun lived off of his expense accounts. This lifestyle enabled Calhoun to save his money, which he invested wisely. Calhoun was not a permanent resident of Akron until late in his life, when the tire company that he once worked for repaid his loyalty in a time of need. With the help of his friend, Phillip Bradley, Calhoun lived his final years in Silver Lake and set up the Kenneth L. Calhoun Charitable Trust. This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman in the College of Business Administration. The recipient will receive expenses to cover tuition, with preference given to students who intend to major in finance. This scholarship is renewable based on academic qualifications. Selection of the recipient will be based on merit and determined by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee.

The Lia and John H. Costello Jr. Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
The Lia and John H. Costello Jr. Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business was established in 1997 by their son, John H. Costello, III. John, the senior executive vice president of Sears Roebuck and company, wished to recognize the contribution of his parents. John’s parents were long-term residents of Akron before retiring to South Carolina.

John is a 1968 graduate of The University of Akron and is a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. John received the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni Award in 1997. The scholarship will be presented to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration with a preference being given to marketing majors.

The Edwin J. Gottfried Scholarship For Excellence In Business
The Edwin J. Gottfried Scholarship for Excellence in Business was established in 1998 by Edwin J. Gottfried. Mr. Gottfried graduated from The University of Akron in 1958 with a B.S.B.A. in management. This scholarship will provide full-tuition, room and board, and will be awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration.

International Business Merit Scholarships for Excellence
International Business Merit Scholarships for Excellence were established in 1996. This scholarship provides a minimum of ten (10) full-tuition and room and board scholarships to students who are enrolled in the College of Business Administration with a major in International Business within the Institute for Global Business. Selection of the recipients will be based on merit with approval from the College of Business Administration and International Business faculty.

The KeyBank Scholarship for Excellence
The KeyBank Scholarship for Excellence was created through the generosity of KeyBank N.A. Thanks to the vision of its Executive Management, Key plays a leadership role among corporate entities and is a dedicated and active partner in the civic community. This commitment is validated in each and every city where Key does business. The scholarship is to be awarded to an incoming freshman in the College of Business Administration. The recipient will receive an award to cover expenses for tuition, books, and fees. Preference will be given to a minority student who meets the Scholarship for Excellence criteria. The selection of the recipient will be determined by the Office of Minority Affairs and the College of Business Administration’s Scholarship Committee.

The Peggy and Bill Maltarich, Jr. Endowed Business Scholarship in Excellence
The Peggy and Bill Maltarich, Jr. Endowed Business Scholarship in Excellence was established in 1998 by Peggy and Bill to thank The University of Akron for the fine education they received. Bill, a 1969 and 1975 graduate, with degrees in Sociology and Psychology, currently serves on the Advancement Council for the College of Business Administration. Bill works for TRW, Inc. as the Vice-President for Human Resources. Peggy, a 1980 Accounting graduate, teaches in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. In 1994, she was appointed to the commission to study the Ohio economy and structure. Currently, Peggy is the Director of Taxation at RJF International. The scholarship will be based on merit, with selection by the College of Business Administration scholarship selection committee.

The Huber L. and Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting
The Huber L. and Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting was established in 1997 with a gift from Mr. Huber L. Mollenkopf, affectionately known as "Molly," and a matching gift from GenCorp. The scholarship is named for Huber L. Mollenkopf and his wife Virginia, loyal friends and benefactors of The University of Akron. Mr. Mollenkopf is an honorary alumnus of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy and has been recognized for his contributions to the integrity of the accounting field through his distinguished career at The General Tire and Rubber Company. It is his intention for this endowed fund to be used annually to support outstanding students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. Mr. Mollenkopf is also an honorary member of Beta Alpha Psi, has served as National Vice President and member of the national board now known as the Institute of Management Accountants, and has been a member and former officer of the Honorary Stuart Cameron McLeod Society. The recipient shall be an accounting major, have high grades like those of an honor student (although the award shall not be restricted to honor students), be active on campus, have high ethics, and have strong leadership capabilities. The student should have the urge to build for his/her future performance of excellence. The selection of students will be performed by the Head of the School of Accountancy with the assistance of accounting professors and approval by the Dean of the College of Business Administration.

The Kimberly Morgan Accounting Scholarship for Excellence
The Kimberly Morgan Accounting Scholarship for Excellence wa established in 1997 by an anonymous friend of Ms. Morgan in her honor. This fund is to be used to support outstanding students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.

The recipient shall be an accounting major, have high grades like those of an honor student (although the award shall not be restricted to honor students), be active on campus, have high ethics, and have strong leadership capabilities. The student should have the urge to build for his/her future performance of excellence.

Robert R. Morrison Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
The Robert R. Morrison Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business was established in 1998, by The J.M. Smucker Company, in honor of Bob's retirement. Robert R. Morrison retired as Vice President of Operations after 38 years of service with the J.M. Smucker Company, where he also served on their board since 1970. Mr. Morrison graduated from The University of Akron in 1958 with a degree in business administration. Mr. Morrison was also a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and a member of the University's soccer team.

Mr. Morrison is currently a member of the College of Business Administration Advancement Council, and was a 1991 recipient of the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni award. Active in the University, Mr. Morrison was also a member of the National Alumni Board of Director's from 1974-1976 and received the prestigious Alumni Honor Award in 1985. Mr. Morrison married to the former Diane (Dede) Denison, and they have three children.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Applicants should be students who maintain good academic records, participate in extracurricular activities, and have some full or part time work experience. To remain eligible for the scholarship, the student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average at the College of Business Administration within The University of Akron. Selection of the recipient is determined by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee and Mr. Morrison.

The Georgina H. Schaller International Business Scholarship for Excellence
The Georgina H. Schaller International Business Scholarship for Excellence was established on her birthday in 1998 by her daughter Jill K. Gibson, Assistant Director of The Institute for Global Business. This scholarship will be used to recruit non-traditional women students in the College of Business Administration who wish to major or minor in International Business within The Institute for Global Business, or to pursue coursework in International Business. Selection of the recipient will be based on merit with approval from the College of Business Administration and International Business faculty.

The Harry P. and Rainy G. Stitzlein Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
This scholarship was established in 1995 by Mr. Stitzlein’s wife, Rainy Stitzlein, Malone Advertising, family, friends, and alumni as a memorial to one of the University’s most beloved alumni who died March 14, 1995, at the age of 67. The scholarship pays homage to a man who was a great community leader, loyal alumnus and distinguished businessman. Mr. Stitzlein, Chairman of Malone Advertising, Inc. of Akron, was a successful businessman and dynamic community leader whose unabashed devotion to his University and hometown never wavered. Like his wife, Rainy, Mr. Stitzlein worked for decades to advance the University’s mission.

The scholarship is awarded to one or two students as determined by the committee. If one student receives the scholarship, it is $10,000 per year for four years. If two students are selected, it is $5,000 per year for four years. The funds may be applied toward the student’s tuition, books, fees, or room and board. The student applicant should be ranked in the upper one-third of their high school graduating class, have a 3.25 or better GPA, and a 26 or higher ACT score. It is renewable based on good academic standing, interest in business and maintaining a GPA of 3.25. Malone Advertising may also provide an internship to the scholarship recipient based on interest and performance. Preference is given to those students indicating marketing or advertising as their major or minor with demonstrated ability and interest. Criteria for selection include class rank, GPA, ACT scores, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.

The David F. Thomas Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business Administration
The David F. Thomas Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business Administration was established in 1998 by David F. Thomas, Managing Director of Citicorp Venture Capital, LTD., New York, New York. Mr. Thomas graduated from The University of Akron in 1972 with B.S. degrees in Accounting and Finance. While at Akron, Mr. Thomas was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. Mr. Thomas established this scholarship to thank The University of Akron for the fine education he received.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Applicants should be students who maintain good academic records, participate in extracurricular activities, and have some full or part time work experience. To remain eligible for the scholarship, the student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average at the College of Business Administration within The University of Akron. Selection of the recipient is determined by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee.

The Robert D. and Peggy A. Weed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
Established in 1998 by Robert D. Weed, The Robert D. and Peggy A. Weed Scholarship for Excellence in Business promotes the ideals of dedication, integrity, innovation, and growth. As owner and founder of Robert Weed Plywood, a wholesale warehouse distribution center for RV manufacturers, Mr. Weed attributes his success to people. To Weed, the most important asset for any business is skilled professionals committed to superior service and doing the job right. Through this scholarship, The University of Akron will attract the most talented and dedicated students pursuing careers in business.

Mr. Weed attended The University of Akron during the evenings on the GI Bill while working at BFGoodrich Company. After graduating with a degree in business in 1950, he became involved in the plywood industry at Cleveland Plywood Corp. In 1954, Mr. Weed took a position with Jamestown Veneer & Plywood in New York. Here, he expanded his knowledge of the mobile home industry during this industry's early stages of growth. By 1966, Mr. Weed moved to Elkhart, Indiana, home of the mobile home industry in the United States, where he established Robert Weed Plywood. Today, his company markets and manufacturers products to RV manufacturers, manufactured housing, kitchen cabinet makers, and furniture manufacturing industries.

The Bernard F. Zaucha Endowed Accounting Scholarship for Excellence
The Bernard F. Zaucha Endowed Accounting Scholarship for Excellence was established in 1997 by Mr. Bernard F. Zaucha, a former faculty member of The University of Akron's College of Business Administration accounting department. Zaucha is an alumnus of the College of Business Administration with a B.S.A. in Accounting in 1968 and an M.B.A. in Finance in 1971. Bernard F. Zaucha created this scholarship to thank the University for the fine education he received and in appreciation for his many years of teaching. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration who is a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School with first preference given to accounting majors. Selection of the recipient will be made by the CBA Scholarship Committee, an accounting department member, and in consultation with the Zaucha family.

Scholarships for Excellence in the College of Education

The College of Education Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence
The Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Education. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the College of Education. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Education.

The Roger and Judy Read Scholarship for Excellence in Education
Established in 1997 by Scott Read and his wife, Kimberly, in honor of Scott's parents, Roger and Judy Read. This scholarship is inspired by Roger and Judy Read's shared belief in the importance of education and the need to attract the most talented and dedicated students to pursue careers as educators. As longtime benefactors of The University of Akron, Roger and Judy have devoted their personal and professional talents to promoting the interests of the University. In tribute to this great display of commitment to education, Scott and Kimberly were inspired to establish this scholarship for the benefit of future educators.

The Roger and Judy Read Scholarship for Excellence in Education is part of the Scholarships for Excellence program, an initiative to recruit academically talented students to The University of Akron.

The Harold H. and Pauline F. Schroeder Endowment Scholarship Fund
This fund was established through a testamentary gift from Harold H. Schroeder B.S.E.E. ’31 and Pauline F. Schroeder. Mr. Schroeder was a close friend of Dr. Norman P. Auburn, who fostered Mr. Schroeder’s interest in The University of Akron. A loyal alumnus, he maintained close association with his alma mater through membership on the National Alumni Board and the University Club. Mr. Schroeder had a successful career with Bell System companies, including Ohio Bell, Michigan Bell and AT&T. For his professional achievements, Mr. Schroeder was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Honor Award from the College of Engineering in 1963. Mrs. Schroeder was a former University of Akron Student and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. After their retirement to Florida, Mrs. Schroeder was an active member of many civic organizations. This endowed fund is established to provide scholarship support for students in the College of Engineering and the College of Education at The University of Akron and will initially be used for the Scholarships for Excellence Program.

The Catherine J. Wardman Endowed College of Education
Scholarship for Women's Physical Education
Established in 1997 under the will of Catherine J. Wardman, this endowed scholarship fund has been presented to The University of Akron College of Education. A retired physical education teacher, Miss Wardman was a dedicated teacher and directed that her support be used for women who share her dedication to teaching physical education. It is the hope of the donor that the scholarship will encourage each recipient's commitment to education, which was the mission of Catherine J. Wardman.

Recipients are to be selected by the Office of Financial Aid from female students enrolled in the College of Education in any current or future physical education programs. The Wardman Scholarship is to be awarded as part of the Scholarship for Excellence program as long as that program remains a University priority.

Scholarships for Excellence in the College of Engineering

The E. Robert, BME ’50, and Lois Criss Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering
This fund was established by Bob and Lois Criss as a Scholarship for Excellence to provide a full scholarship for an outstanding student in Mechanical Engineering. The student shall fulfill all criteria set forth by the University to require a Scholarship for Excellence, as well as having declared a major in mechanical engineering. Natives of Akron, the Criss' both attended the University. Bob served as a combat infantryman in World War II. He was severely wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in January 1945 and was discharged from the army hospital in August 1946, just in time to enroll in the University's College of Engineering in September. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Lois Gill was a student in the general college. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. They met on campus in 1947 and were married in December 1948. Following graduation with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, Bob had job assignments in product design and development and machine design and installation. He joined the Kyova Pipe Company in 1956 as their Plant Engineer and was responsible for the construction, equipment installation and start-up of their new plant in Ironton, Ohio. He built and served as Plant Manager of their plastic pipe plant in Springfield, Illinois. He joined the General Electric Company in 1966. Utilizing his engineering training and prior experience, he constructed and equipped a major production facility in Worthington, Ohio. He also oversaw the construction of a plant in Ireland. During his 19 years at General Electric, he was responsible for many environmental engineering projects and for 15 years was responsible for compliance with all federal, state and local EPA regulations. Bob was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio for over 30 years. Bob credits the broad-based curriculum offered at The University of Akron, combined with the experience and focus garnered through serving his country, with providing the tools for a successful career. Together, Lois and Bob raised three sons: William, Robert, and Karl, and have established this scholarship to help provide the same kind of educational opportunity Bob received to talented young people desiring a career in engineering.

The Electrical Engineering Honors Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 1990-91 by Drs. C. F. Chen and C. S. Chen. Because of their concern for students, these two electrical engineering professors endowed this scholarship to benefit outstanding students majoring in, or planning to major in, electrical engineering. The scholarship may be awarded to an academically talented incoming freshman who plans to pursue a major in electrical engineering. The scholarship recipient shall be selected by the dean of the College of Engineering, in cooperation with the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The College of Engineering Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence
The Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Engineering. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the College of Engineering. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Engineering.

The Theodore Raymond Harpley Electrical Engineering Scholarship
Mrs. Betsy Harpley established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Ted R. Harpley, honors graduate, College of Engineering, Class of 1958. Mr. Harpley was a talented power systems engineer, holder of six United States patents, and senior vice president of engineering and a corporate officer of Vicor Corporation, Andover, Massachusetts. The scholarship provides full tuition, fees, books, and supplies for an outstanding Akron-area undergraduate enrolled full-time in the Department of Electrical Engineering. The scholarship is for three consecutive years or six consecutive semesters. It is awarded by the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering based on engineering talent, high scholastic achievement, leadership ability, and potential.

Bruce W. Rogers, Jr. Honors Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering
This scholarship fund was initiated in 1991 by Bruce W. Rogers, Jr. Mr. Rogers is a 1956 University of Akron mechanical engineering graduate and close friend of the College of Engineering. Mr. Rogers serves on the executive committee of the Engineering Advisory Council and has provided financial support to the college for many years. The scholarship shall be awarded each year to an outstanding student interested in studying mechanical engineering or currently majoring in this area. The scholarship may be awarded to an academically talented incoming freshman who plans to pursue a major in mechanical engineering. The scholarship recipient shall be selected by the dean of the College of Engineering in cooperation with the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Hoyt M. and Merdith Wells "Scholarship for Excellence" in Engineering
The Hoyt M. and Merdith Wells Scholarship in Engineering provides for an outstanding undergraduate College of Engineering student, who demonstrates academic achievement, character, leadership, a significant work ethic and a commitment to a business perspective of engineering. The student must be a U.S. citizen, and this scholarship may be renewed, based on the student's academic achievement.

This scholarship is funded for five years by Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt M. Wells, friends of The University of Akron. Mr. and Mrs. Wells are longtime members of the Akron Community and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company family. Mr. Wells' career with Goodyear featured involvement in many facets of the company's business and culminated in his serving as president, chief operating officer, and vice chairman of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Mr. Wells serves as chairman of the College of Engineering Advancement Council. Mr. and Mrs. Wells are members of the President's Club of the John R. Buchtel Society.

The Dean of the College of Engineering and the University Scholarship Committee will select the recipient of this scholarship.

Scholarships for Excellence in the College of Fine and Applied Arts

The College of Fine and Applied Arts Advancement Council Scholarships for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Fine and Applied Arts.

The Pauline Franks Endowed Scholarship for Excellence
The Pauline Franks Endowed Scholarship for Excellence was created in 1997 by Miss Franks, Professor Emeritus of Bibliography. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving freshman in the College of Fine and Applied Arts upon recommendation of the Dean and according to the guidelines for the Scholarships for Excellence.

The Kolbe Family Scholarship for Excellence in Communications
The Kolbe Family Scholarship for Excellence in Communications was established in 1998 by K. William Kolbe to honor the legacy of the Kolbe family at The University of Akron. Professor Carl F. Kolbe was Buchtel College's first professor of German. Carl's son, Parke R. Kolbe (class of 1901), grew up on the Buchtel campus and succeeded his father as professor of modern languages. In 1913 Parke Kolbe became 7th president of Buchtel College and led the College's growth and transition to the Municipal University of Akron, where he served as president until 1925.

Both men were honored as founding fathers of The University of Akron when the newly renovated Kolbe Hall was renamed the Carl F. and Parke R. Kolbe Hall in 1998. The Kolbe Family Scholarship ensures that the Kolbe legacy at The University of Akron will eternally thrive in assisting generations of deserving students.

The Edith H. Raleigh Endowed Art Scholarship
The Edith H. Raleigh Endowed Art Scholarship was created in 1997 through a bequest to the Akron Public Schools. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving student graduating from the Akron Public Schools who enrolls in The University of Akron Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. The student(s) must have demonstrated artistic skills, financial need and an interest in pursuing a career in the field of art.

The Donald S. Varian Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Theatre Arts
The Donald S. Varian Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Theatre Arts was created in 1997 to recognize Mr. Varian's role in establishing the theatre program at The University of Akron. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to an outstanding freshman planning to major in theatre arts.

The Mary Morrison Varian Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music
The Mary Morrison Varian Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music was created in 1997 to recognize Mary's lengthy involvement with The University of Akron as a student and as the wife of a faculty member. Of special note is her commitment to the Faculty Women's Club and the Women's Committee of The University of Akron. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to an outstanding freshman planning to major in music. Preference will be given to a student studying voice.

This memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by Dr. Harry Leuchtag in loving memory of his mother, Ethel, and his wife, Lois. The Ethel and Lois Leuchtag Endowed Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Nursing. Dr. Harry Leuchtag received the University's Honorary Alumni Award in 1996 in recognition of his devotion to the medical field and higher education.

The Dean's Scholars Fund for Excellence was established in 1997 to provide full tuition and room and board scholarship(s) to a student(s) each year who is enrolled in the College of Nursing. This scholarship was chartered to recruit exemplary students into the College of Nursing. Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on merit with approval from the College of Nursing.

Scholarships for Excellence in the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

G. Maxine Harwood and H. James Harwood Endowed Scholarship in Polymer Science
This endowed scholarship was established in 1996 in honor of G. Maxine Harwood and Professor H. James Harwood in recognition of their 65th birthdays. It was established to encourage third or fourth year undergraduate students in the sciences at The University of Akron to pursue study in Polymer Science. Funds to support this scholarship are administered by the Department of Polymer Science; applicants must demonstrate their commitment to pursue continued studies in polymer science to their respective department heads and subsequently be recommended to the Chair of the Department of Polymer Science by April 1st. Funds for this award were provided by Professor Harwood's former students, corporate associates and friends.
