General Scholarships

The Akron Branch AAUW Scholarship
The Akron Branch American Association of University Women Scholarship was established in December 2005 to provide financial assistance to deserving women enrolled as full-time students at The University of Akron. AAUW was founded in 1881 as a catalyst for change, and they continue to support projects that shape the future for women and girls. The Akron Branch was established in December 1926 through the leadership of Edith Grace Cray, a 1923 graduate of The University of Akron. The mission of AAUW today is to promote equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. This scholarship has been established to help women reach their academic goals in either undergraduate or graduate programs. Recipients will be selected by the AAUW Scholarship Committee in coordination with The University of Akron’s Office of Student Financial Assistance.

The Akron Business and Professional Women’s Club Scholarships
Established in May of 1973 by the Akron Business and Professional Women’s Club of Akron, this endowed fund provides scholarship assistance as determined by the University Scholarship Committee. First consideration is given to a mature woman wanting to further her education. Selection of each recipient is made on the basis of financial need. Contributions to the fund are accepted from interested donors.

The Akron Jaycee Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in May of 1983 by action of the Board of Trustees of the Akron Jaycee Foundation, this endowed fund is in honor of Heskett A. Kuhn, the founding father of the Akron Jaycees who believed, as all Jaycees do, that service to humanity is the best work of life. Selection is made by the University Scholarship Committee. Scholarship recipients shall be current Jaycee members, former Jaycee members, or children of current or former members.

The Akron University Police Patrolmen’s Association,
Charles L. Penn and Brian Roshong Memorial Scholarship

The Akron University Police Patrolmen’s Association (AUPPA), Charles L. Penn and Brian Roshong Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by the Akron University Police Patrolmen’s Association, Inc. This endowed fund honors Charles Lee Penn, Jr. and Brian Roshong. Both men left an indelible impression on the lives of those around them.

Penn (September 26, 1948 – May 30, 1976) graduated from Canton Lehman High School and The University of Akron. Penn served with The University of Akron police force in 1973 and attended the University’s first Police Academy in 1974. After graduation, Penn accepted a commission with the United States Army and unfortunately died in Korea while on duty.

Roshong (March 10, 1972 – May 22, 1996) was a native of Canton, OH and graduated from Perry High School in Massillon. Roshong came to The University of Akron Police Department Basic Training Academy in 1994 following a career as a military intelligence specialist in the United States Army. Roshong held positions with both the Cambridge Police Department and the City of Canton Police Department. Roshong fell victim to a fatal gunshot wound in the line of duty in 1996.

The Sam Alexander Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 1977 by Home Centers Inc. in honor of founder Sam Alexander upon his retirement following 25 years of dedicated service as president and vice chairman of the company. The fund provides scholarship aid covering tuition for full time undergraduate students. Recipients and amount of scholarships awarded are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Alpha Delta Pi Scholarship
Established in 1851, Alpha Delta Pi sorority is “committed to sisterhood, values and ethics, high academic standards and social responsibility.” Alpha Delta Pi is the oldest secret society for women in the Greek system. The University of Akron chapter was founded in 1938 from Sigma Delta Theta, the oldest local sorority on campus.

This scholarship was established in 2003 through the generous support of alumni and friends. Its purpose is to provide financial assistance to qualified and deserving University of Akron students who are members of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Awards shall be allocated by the local chapter’s House Corporation and shall cover, all or in part, tuition, fees, and books, as well as room and board.
The Ann E. Alspach Scholarship
The Ann E. Alspach Scholarship was established in 1996 to provide assistance for students working while attending The University of Akron. Ann graduated in 1986 with a degree in business management technology. Her father, Loran E. Alspach '50 B.S.M.E., and brother, Steven E. '82, also are alumni. In recognition of the fact that many of the University's students work and have families while attending the University, Ann Alspach established her scholarship to provide her assistance. It is the intention of the donor that her scholarship be awarded to deserving students for whom the demands of school, employment and family may interfere with their academic success. Students with a grade point average of 2.50 or above for undergraduates or 3.0 and above for graduate students, are to be given consideration for support from this scholarship.

The Alumni Association’s Student Recognition Award
The University of Akron Alumni Association presents Student Recognition Awards to one or more students each year to recognize outstanding examples of leadership, service, heroism, scholarship, or athletic achievement.

The Ruth Apati Memorial Scholarship Fund
Family and friends established this scholarship fund in 1980 in memory of Ruth Apati, secretary to the director of Residence Halls for many years and a devoted student confidant. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Howard and Joann Atwood Scholarship
The Howard and Joann Atwood Scholarship was created in 1999 by Howard Atwood to recognize the couple's commitment to education. The Atwood family has a deep relationship with the University owning the land upon which Buchtel Hall was built. Mr. Atwood has been a successful businessman and entrepreneur. The Howard and Joann Atwood Scholarship is to be awarded based on academic merit. First preference will be given to a graduate of Tallmadge High School.

The Kathleen Montgomery Auburn Scholarship for Graduate Study
This scholarship provides scholarship aid for women pursuing graduate or professional study at the University. Contributions in memory of the late wife of the 10th president of the University, Dr. Norman P. Auburn, have been made by major women’s campus groups, alumnae, Faculty Women’s Club, and faculty members

The Lieutenant Colonel Addison E. Baker Memorial Scholarship
This endowment was created by a gift to The University of Akron from Frances R. Merryweather in loving memory of her first husband, Addison Baker. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Addison Baker was a decorated World War II Air Force officer. He commanded the 93rd Heavy Bombardment Group and was killed in the service of his country during a low-level attack against enemy oil refineries at Polesti, Rumania, August 1, 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Baker was accorded the Medal of Honor, this nation's highest military honor, on March 11, 1944. Mrs. Merryweather received her bachelor's degree from the College of Education at The University of Akron. This endowment is to benefit cadets who best display the Air Force's core values of integrity, courage, competence and patriotism in their tenacious service to the cadet corps. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Director of Aerospace Studies.

The Kenneth E. and June Blackburn Banks, Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship
Established in 1991, this scholarship is designed to support and to challenge the members of The University of Akron’s chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. As an active and concerned member of the fraternity, Kenneth Banks has made this scholarship support for undergraduates available to Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity members based on academic achievement and financial need. Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee on the basis of established criteria for scholarship and need. The annual award is to be used to meet the full expense of tuition, books, and fees for each recipient. The number of recipients will be determined by the amount available for award each year. Renewed support is possible if the recipient continues to meet the established award criteria.
The Robert and Emily Beasley Scholarship Fund
The Robert and Emily Beasley Scholarship Fund is established by the Beasley Charitable Trust Fund to assist students with financial needs. Students selected as scholarship recipients may be handicapped and/or minorities. The Beasley Scholars represent the dedication and love of learning evidenced by the lives of Robert and Emily Beasley.

The Samuel A. Berzon Educational Fund
The fund was established in 1979 by management and personnel of Annaco Inc. of Akron as a tribute to the company’s founder, Samuel A. Berzon. The fund provides deserved recognition of his inspirational leadership, vision, dedication, and deep seated concern for his associates. Financial assistance is provided to students on the basis of academic aptitude and need with the first preference given to employees and/or immediate relatives of Annaco Inc. Recipients and amounts awarded are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Endowed Scholarship Fund
Since its founding in 1931, Beta Sigma Phi has grown to be an international organization of women with over 250,000 active members in nearly 12,500 chapters. It is a cultural, social, and service organization and is not affiliated with any university or college. The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Endowed Scholarship is open to female students pursuing a four-year degree in any major. The student must have graduated from a high school located in the five-county area of Summit, Stark, Portage, Wayne, or Medina with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Recipients may be incoming freshmen or students returning to the University to complete their degree. If there is no applicant who meets the geographical requirement, an applicant with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average from any high school in Ohio may be considered. The recipient must also maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average throughout four years at the University.

The Black Professional Association Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established with a gift from the Black Professional Association Charitable Foundation. The gift was initiated by Dr. Charles Taylor, who was selected as the Black Professional of the Year for 1989. Scholarship recipients must be black students at The University of Akron who have demonstrated financial need (financial statements qualifying for government grants). Preference shall be given to students from the greater Cleveland area. Scholarship recipients shall be selected by the scholarship committee in cooperation with the Office of Minority Affairs.

The Ruth K. and Loyd S. Bloomfield Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund, established in 1976 by Ruth K. Bloomfield in loving memory of her husband, provides scholarship aid for full time undergraduate students. Recipients and scholarship amounts are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.
