General Scholarships

The Perry T. Demming Scholarship for Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Theta
Established in 1986 by Perry T. Demming with a gift of real estate valued in excess of $23,000, this scholarship provides financial assistance to qualified and deserving University of Akron students who are members of the Ohio Epsilon chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. The initial criteria shall govern this scholarship fund for an unspecified period of time or until the donor designates another income beneficiary at The University of Akron. The scholarship award shall be allocated by the scholarship committee of the Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Theta and shall cover all or part of tuition, fees, books, and room and board.


The Eleanor and Walter Dennis Student Scholarship
Established in 1996 by Mrs. Patricia Ballard in loving memory of her parents, The Eleanor and Walter Dennis Student Scholarship provides financial support for deserving students. Mr. Walter Dennis, who was known as "Mr. New York" by his friends and family, enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career as an executive with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. He was a man of remarkable accomplishments and uncompromising integrity. Although he received no formal college training, he strongly believed in the importance of higher education. Mrs. Eleanor Dennis' devotion and support for her husband and his work exemplified the adage that "behind every great man there is a great woman." Her abiding confidence in Mr. Dennis and her dedication to her family complimented his success as a businessman and a father.


The Theodore C. and Frances S. Dethloff Scholarship Fund
An endowment fund established under the will of Theodore C. Dethloff, well known Akron labor leader who died in 1980, this fund provides scholarship assistance to worthy graduate or undergraduate students with preference given to those enrolled in the fields of engineering, medicine, and law, including students in premedicine and pre law. Selection is by the University Scholarship Committee.


Developmental Programs Tutorial Endowment
This fund was established in 1998 by Dr. Diane Vukovich to benefit tutors from Department of Developmental Programs who work in either the peer tutoring program, or as peer tutors in the Mathematics Laboratory, Writing Laboratory or Study Skills Center. Dr. Vukovich, who has devoted many years of service to The University of Akron, was instrumental in the establishment of the University Developmental Program, worked in the program, and is the author of the mathematics textbook, “Math is not a Spectator Sport.”


The Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Dilley Scholarship
This endowed fund was established in 1966 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Dilley. The income is used to assist worthy students selected by the University Scholarship Committee.


The Do The Right Thing Scholarship
The Do The Right Thing Scholarship was established by the Akron Police Department and the Do The Right Thing Board to encourage and reward students in the Akron Public Schools who have demonstrated the highest values and ethics both in school and their respective communities. This scholarship will be awarded annually to two incoming freshmen at The University of Akron. The scholarship recipients must meet all the requirements as established by the Do The Right Thing Board as well as the academic requirements of The University of Akron. The recipients will be determined by the Do The Right Thing Scholarship Committee and the Department of Financial Aid.


The Edward M. Engler Scholarship Endowment
This endowed scholarship was established by Edward M. Engler who, after completing his B.A. in Political Science in 1969, then received his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education-Social Studies in 1970 and his M.A. in History at The University of Akron in 1975. Active in The Ohio Council for Social Studies and Phi Delta Kappa, he served as President of the Revere Education Association prior to his retirement from teaching in the Revere school system and at The University of Akron. Never one to be idle, Ed’s commitment to community extended to volunteering for his church and for the Red Cross. His love of teaching eventually found expression through his position as a first-person interpreter—the “Schoolmaster”—at Hale Farm & Village, a living historical museum in Bath, Ohio.

The Edward M. Engler Scholarship is funded by the donor to provide assistance to a full-time student who has just completed high school with a 2.75-3.00 grade point average, and who demonstrates financial need. The scholarship is renewable for four years provided the student achieves a 2.75 or greater cumulative GPA and performs community service. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Faculty Women’s Club Scholarship
The Faculty Women’s Club, which has a long history of contributing to the University, has established a scholarship for the purpose of promoting the general good of the University and honoring the club’s membership. This scholarship provides tuition, supplies, and/or books to a junior or senior female full time student in a college chosen yearly by the Faculty Women’s Club Scholarship Committee. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee and must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of at least 3.00.


The Jesse Whitworth Failor and Ruth Lucille Failor Wilcox Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1985 by Deborah Wilcox Blick and Mark J. Wilcox, both of Hickory, North Carolina, in loving and devoted memory of their grandfather, Jesse Whitworth Failor, and their mother, Ruth Lucille Failor Wilcox, Class of 1942 and loyal member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Scholarship earnings are used annually to provide tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate women who are members of Delta Gamma Sorority. Financial need and academic standing are considered in selection of the recipient by the University Scholarship Committee.


The Firestone Trust Fund Strive Toward Excellence Program
Established in 1987 through a gift of $3 million, the program is designed to help minority and economically disadvantaged students succeed in college, to guarantee admission to The University of Akron upon successful completion of STEP, and to receive tuition scholarships at the University. This far reaching academic, scholarship, and admission program was made possible by a grant from The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company through The Firestone Trust Fund.


The Forrest E. Forsythe Endowed Memorial Scholarship
This memorial scholarship was established in 1982 by family and friends, in loving memory of Forrest E. Forsythe of Dubois, Pennsylvania. The Forrest E. Forsythe Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate members of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. A graduate of Washington and Jefferson, Gamma '50, Forsythe was a major force in the reestablishment of Delta Tau Delta on The University of Akron campus. Mr. Forsythe was devoted to the fraternity for many years and was recognized by membership in the Distinguished Service Chapter for his advisory services and his respect for the ideals Delta Tau Delta represents.


The Arthur L. Foster Scholarships
Awards in the freshman year are made to graduates of Akron high schools. They are based on scholarship achievement, citizenship, promise, and leadership.


The Irl A. Frederick Scholarships
An endowment established under the will of Irl A. Frederick, Class of 1909, this fund provides scholarship assistance to worthy students wishing to continue their education. The recipients and scholarship amounts are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.


The Ervin D. Fritch and Ada B. Fritch Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded annually to worthy and capable young women and men selected by the University Scholarship Committee on the basis of scholarship, financial need, moral character, and ability.

Garfield High School Golden Anniversary Scholarship Fund
Established in 1976 with funds accruing from Garfield High School's Golden Anniversary celebration, earnings from this endowed fund are used to provide tuition assistance for deserving Garfield High School graduates during their freshman year at the University. Contributions are welcome from alumni and friends, especially from 50th anniversary classes. Selection of scholarship recipients is handled by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Fred and Edith Garrett Scholarship Fund
This memorial scholarship fund was established in loving memory in 1978 by family and friends of Fred and Edith Garrett, the latter a 1906 graduate of Buchtel College and for more than 75 years a devoted member of the Eta chapter of Delta Gamma sorority. Recipients and scholarship amounts are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Gessner Family Scholarship
The Gessner Family Scholarship was created with an outright gift in 2006 by James E. and Mary T. Gessner. The Gessner’s three grown children all attended and graduated from The University of Akron. As students, they received scholarship support. Through the Gessner Family Scholarship, the Gessners wish to provide similar educational opportunities for deserving students.

The recipient of the Gessner Family Scholarship must be enrolled full time at The University of Akron and must be an American citizen. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and have financial need. Strong preference will be given to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate economic initiative by paying their tuition solely through scholarships, grants, and/or employment. Recipients must plan a co op assignment for some time during their academic career. The scholarship is renewable as long as the above requirements are maintained.

The Donald L. Glaser Scholarship Fund
Air Enterprises Inc. established the Donald L. Glaser Scholarship Fund upon Mr. Glaser’s retirement in recognition of his leadership and vision in founding the company. Mr. Glaser represented the finest qualities of entrepreneur, leader, and engineer in his long career at Air Enterprises. The Glaser Scholarship(s) is to be awarded annually to a student(s) characterized by high academic achievement, maturity, and a high level of motivation. The scholarship(s) is renewable and equally distributed throughout the academic year. Special preference is given to children of Air Enterprise employees who meet all other criteria.

The Barbara A. Goellner Scholarship Fund
The Barbara A. Goellner Scholarship Fund was established in 1992 with a bequest from Mrs. Goellner’s estate. She was born and raised in Akron. The scholarship provides financial assistance for deserving University of Akron students based on academic talents. Recipients will be selected by the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

The Carl and Agnes Gorbach Family Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in March, 1993, by Agnes Gorbach and her ten children in memory of their loving husband and father, Carl Gorbach. In October 2003 in memory of their mother Agnes, the Gorbach children revised the scholarship to commemorate the lives of both their parents. The University of Akron has been the alma mater of not only Mr. and Mrs. Gorbach, but of several of their children, as well. It is the wishes of the family that the recipient of this scholarship meet the following stipulations: junior or senior class status, minimum grade point average of 2.5, resident of Summit County, member of family of five or more children (if possible). Each year, the family will receive a list of qualified applicants from which to choose one or more recipients.

The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio Scholarship
One scholarship is awarded to a deserving student meeting the lodge’s scholarship requirements.
