Department of Development General Scholarships The Robert J. and Richard M. Greenwald Scholarship for the Editor of The Buchtelite
Twins, Robert J. and Richard M. Greenwald were born on December 20, 1916. Both are 1939 graduates from The University of Akron with B.S.B.A. degrees in Business Administration. Their activities at the University included Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Sigma Alpha and co-editing The Buchtelite. The twins were listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The Greenwalds also have masters degrees from New York University.
Robert J. Greenwald ran for student body president during his senior year. His platform included better football seats and the need to join an athletic conference. He is a retired U.S. Army Colonel who gives great credit to the experience he gained as the editor of The Buchtelite. It was because of this experience that he was based in London during World War II where he met his wife.
Richard M. Greenwald has won several awards in his community, such as the 1989 Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Community Involvement Award and the 1990 Hermosa Beach Business of the Year Award.
Robert and Richard Greenwald understand the importance of The Buchtelite standing as a quality publication. As former editors of The Buchtelite, they captivated the spirit of Akron and produced a publication of lasting value. It is because of this understanding and this achievement that the twin brothers have established this scholarship fund. The Greenwald Fund supports a competitive, merit-based student scholarship covering tuition, room and board for the editor of The Buchtelite.
The Anthony Gualtieri ’71 Endowed Scholarship
The Anthony Gualtieri ’71 Endowed Scholarship was established through a bequest from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gualtieri. Mr. Gualtieri graduated from The University of Akron in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
This scholarship is intended to assist qualified students transferring to The University of Akron from another college or university. Candidates must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to be considered for this scholarship. Grants will cover tuition, fees and books, as well as room and board, all or in part. The Office of Student Financial Aid will identify candidates and select recipients for this scholarship.
The Lida B. Hain Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1979 with funds provided from the estate of Lida B. Hain, Class of 1910, this endowed fund provides scholarship assistance for worthy undergraduates. The University Scholarship Committee selects the recipients and determines the amounts of the grants.
The Hakoah Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1980 by the Hakoah Club of Akron, this scholarship fund is provided annually for tuition, fees, and books for deserving undergraduate students. Recipients, selected on the basis of need and academic ability, are recommended by a committee composed of members of the Hakoah Club.
The Carl L. Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund
An endowed fund established in 1973 by family and friends in memory of the late University Treasurer Carl L. Hall. Income is used to provide scholarship assistance for worthy students selected by the University Scholarship Committee.
The Hermine Z. Hansen Trust of Student Aid
This trust agreement, established with provisions from the estate of Hermine Z. Hansen, enables earnings to be used by the University for assisting needy and deserving students in carrying forward their education.
The Michael T. Hayes Scholarship
The Michael T. Hayes Scholarship was created in 2000 by Michael T. Hayes, an alumnus of The University of Akron. Mr. Hayes offers the scholarship in recognition of his commitment to learning and to the Akron area. The Michael T. Hayes Scholarship will be given to graduates of East High School.
The Roy O. Hinch Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is to be presented to students based on academic promise and need. It is the donor’s intention to encourage recipients to diligently approach their program of study in preparation for a productive and fulfilling career. It is hoped that recipients will be encouraged to choose the long term benefit of education rather than yielding to the temptation of employment or other short term gratification. The University of Akron Scholarship Committee has complete discretion in the awarding of a full or partial scholarship in any field of study selected by the applicant. To be considered for continued scholarship support, the normal expectation would be maintenance of a minimum 3.00 grade point average and evidence of academic progress. Recipients demonstrating need, and the personal characteristics of good citizenship, may be considered for additional awards up to the completion of the baccalaureate degree or for one year of graduate level study toward a master’s degree.
The Ralph L. and Helen Wright Hoar Scholarship Fund
The Ralph L. and Helen Wright Hoar Scholarship Fund was created by Mr. Hoar in memory of his wife, Helen. Mrs. Hoar was a 1929 graduate of The University of Akron, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. The scholarship(s) will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee of The University of Akron.
The Charles H. Holland Scholarship Fund
The Holland Oil Company established The Charles H. Holland Scholarship Fund in recognition of Charles Holland’s leadership and vision in founding and operating the company. The fund is inspired by Mr. Holland’s example of hard work and dedication to business and the community. The Holland Scholarship(s) is to be awarded annually to a student(s) characterized by academic achievement, maturity, and a high level of motivation. The student(s) will maintain no less than a 2.5 grade point average. The scholarship(s) is to cover the cost of tuition and books and may be renewable and equally distributed throughout the academic year. Special preference is given to Holland Oil employees and their children who meet all other criteria.
The Frank C. Howland Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Frank C. Howland in memory of her late husband. Income from this endowed fund is used to provide worthy students scholarships as determined by the University Scholarship Committee.
The Margery W. Hubbs
The scholarship is granted at the discretion of the donor with attention given to academic achievement and financial need. Mrs. Hubbs’ desire is to have an impact on the lives of students in the Akron area and to assist them in achieving their educational goals. The scholarship will be presented from time to time at the discretion of Mrs. Margery W. Hubbs. The award is a full scholarship providing for both academic and living expenses to recipients pursuing a baccalaureate degree.
The Norma Olin Ireland Scholarship
An annual award is made to a graduating senior member of Phi Sigma Alpha who has been accepted in any discipline in graduate school at The University of Akron. Selection of the student by Phi Sigma Alpha shall be made on the basis of financial need, proven scholarship, and Phi Sigma Alpha membership.
The Harry E. Jackson Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Scholarship
This scholarship was established through a gift from Harry E. Jackson to support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students at The University of Akron. Mr. Jackson earned three degrees from the University – Bachelor’s in Accounting (’70), Master’s in Accounting (’74) and Jurist Doctor (’80). Mr. Jackson worked for BFGoodrich Corporation for 27 years, retiring as Director of International and Federal Taxes in 1999.
Mr. Jackson’s goal is to make this scholarship available only to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students. Selection is to be based upon financial need and academic achievement. Scholarship applications will be sent to the appropriate campus organizations. Grants will cover tuition, fees, books, room and board, all or in part. Separate grants may also be provided for educational programming for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered groups. Selection will be made by a committee comprised of the following personnel: Harry E. Jackson, faculty advisor(s) to the University organization(s) for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students and representative(s) from the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Junior Achievement Scholarships
Established in 1976, these scholarships are awarded to entering freshmen achieving academic excellence in Akron and Summit County schools who have participated in the Junior Achievement program.
The Junior Women’s Civic Club Scholarships
Annual scholarships in varying amounts are awarded to deserving students. Recommendations are made by the University Scholarship Committee with final approval by the Junior Women’s Civic Club Scholarship Committee.
The Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity Founder’s Memorial Fund for Student Aid
The Founder’s Memorial Fund for Student Aid was established in 1977 by the fraternity for Kappa Kappa Gamma Scholarships in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the fraternity’s Lambda chapter at The University of Akron.
The Kaufman Foundation Scholarship
Half of the income derived from this fund, established by Jerome J. Kaufman, is used for student scholarships; the other half is used for faculty salaries.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was reactivated in 1987 by faculty, staff, students, and friends in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The scholarship provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate, black, minority students. Selection of the recipients is determined by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund Steering Committee on the basis of leadership skills and consistent academic achievement. Contributions to the fund are welcomed.
The Louis A. Klages Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship was established in 1982 in loving memory of Louis A. Klages, prominent Akron community and business leader, by his wife, Catherine. It is awarded to undergraduate students of high academic achievement, leadership ability, and financial need. Selection of recipients is determined by the University Scholarship Committee.
The John I. Kleffman Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 1996 with a gift from Mr. John I. Kleffman in appreciation for his education received at The University of Akron. Mr. Kleffman attended evening classes at the University for 9-1/2 years while working full time during the day. He earned his B.S.B.A. degree from the College of Business Administration in 1955. Mr. Kleffman recognizes the demands students attending evening classes must face and wishes to offer financial assistance, through this scholarship, to part-time students attending evening classes. Preference will be given, but not limited to, students majoring in Business Administration or Education. Recipients may apply for renewal of this scholarship. Selection of recipients by the University Scholarship Committee. Additional contributions are welcome from alumni and friends who wish to support the purpose of this scholarship.
The Jack Herbert Kurz Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1984 under the terms of a trust executed by the late Herbert J. Kurz of Cleveland, this endowment fund provides scholarship support for deserving undergraduates in memory of Jack Herbert Kurz, a son of Herbert Kurz and former student at the University. Awards are made by the University Scholarship Committee.
The John A. and Vicki L. LaGuardia Endowed Scholarship
The John A. and Vicki L. LaGuardia Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by long time University employee, alumnus and dedicated friend John A. LaGuardia and his wife, Vicki. The University of Akron is fortunate to benefit from John’s leadership and vision. He has worked tirelessly to advance the mission of The University of Akron, along with the support of his wife Vicki and their five children. In addition to his work in public relations and governmental affairs, John’s door is always open for students, alumni, and friends who seek his advice or support.
John received his bachelor’s degree in Education in 1970 from The University of Akron, and in 1974, his master’s degree in Educational Administration. As a student John was a member of Pi Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and student government. He was a member of the men’s soccer team, and served as president of his junior class. John excelled academically and was honored with several accolades including Dean's List and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, and Order of Omega Honorary Societies. Since February 1997 John has served as Vice President of Public Affairs and Development for the University and as a member of the University Foundation's Board of Trustees. His career at the University first began in 1971 when he was named Associate Director of Alumni Relations. In 1979 he was named Director of Alumni Relations, but left the University in 1985 to pursue a career in the business sector. He held positions in sales and management for Automated Tracking Systems and Xerox from 1985 to 1994, then returned to UA as Director of Alumni and Governmental Relations (1994-97). John’s enthusiasm and commitment to The University of Akron extend beyond his dedicated service and he is known by many in the community for his kind and generous demeanor. John is a member of the Lamplighter's Club of the John R. Buchtel Society.
The John A. and Vicki L. LaGuardia Endowed Scholarship is to be awarded by the Office of Financial Aid of The University of Akron. Preference is to be given to graduates of Hoban High School or members of the Lone Star Fraternity.
The E. P. Lambert Company Scholarship
This endowed fund was established by the E. P. Lambert Company with the income used to assist worthy students selected by the University Scholarship Committee.
The John C. Lampasone, Class of 1939, Scholarship Fund
When John Lampasone was about to graduate from The University of Akron there were few positions available for students with physical disabilities. John had been an exceptional student and then-University president Hezzelton E. Simmons took it upon himself to call on the President of Ohio Edison and intervene on John’s behalf. John was hired, and his exemplary professional accomplishments led to Ohio Edison becoming one of the most active employers of individuals with special disabilities.
This scholarship fund was established with a gift from the estate of Mr. John C. Lampsone, class of 1939. Mr. Lampasone wished to offer his financial assistance for students with special disabilities. His life and career has been spent in assisting people in the Akron community. The John C. Lampasone Scholarship Fund will perpetuate this life-long commitment.
