General Scholarships

The Emmer M. Lancaster Scholarship
Established in 1978 by Emmer M. Lancaster, the first Black graduate of The University of Akron, this endowed scholarship fund was adopted by the Black Alumni Association in 1986 to provide financial assistance to deserving Black high school seniors and/or undergraduate students attending The University of Akron. This award shall be presented to black students demonstrating academic excellence, with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, leadership skills, and commitment to community service. Recipients are selected by the Office of Minority Affairs in consultation with members of the Executive Committee of the Black Alumni Association, with scholarship amounts to be determined.


The Peter LaRose, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1986 on an endowed basis by the Charles W. Carroll family of Akron in honor of Peter LaRose, Sr., president of the House of LaRose and well known Akron community leader, with further support from the memorial gifts of his family and many friends following his untimely death in May of 1986. The fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduates residing in Summit County. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee.


The Sol Levinson Scholarship Fund
Established in 1978 by the Cuyahoga Falls chapter of Lions International in honor of 50 year member Sol Levinson, revered Cuyahoga Falls leader, this scholarship fund provides tuition assistance for blind or partially sighted undergraduates. After Levinson’s death in 1986, this fund became a memorial scholarship and was extended to include, secondarily, deaf and hearing impaired students. Recipients are selected by the University Scholarship Committee with first preference being a resident of Cuyahoga Falls.


The Harry Liberman Educational Fund
Established in 1980 by the Wooster Sheet Metal & Roofing Company in honor of Harry Liberman, chairman of the board, in recognition of his inspiring leadership and devotion to the company and his long-standing service to the community, this educational fund provides financial assistance for undergraduates demonstrating college potential and financial need.


The Isaac Liberman Memorial Scholarship
This endowed fund was established by the Wooster Sheet Metal & Roofing Company in memory of Isaac Liberman. Annual earnings go toward scholarships for students demonstrating college potential and financial need. If qualified, family members of employees of the Wooster Sheet Metal & Roofing Company are given primary consideration.


The Paul W. Litchfield Scholarship Fund
The Paul W. Litchfield Scholarship Fund was established by the Paul W. Litchfield Awards Association in recognition of the leadership by Mr. Litchfield of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Mr. Litchfield was an honorary alumnus of The University of Akron. Mr. Litchfield served Goodyear from 1900 and was chairman of the company from 1940 to 1956. During Mr. Litchfield’s tenure, Goodyear was recognized as the leading tire company in the world. The basic purpose of The Paul W. Litchfield Scholarship Fund is to further the loyalty and cooperation of Goodyear employees through the education assistance extended to their children.


The Louis Lockshin Scholarship
An award for deserving undergraduates was established by the employees of Uniwear Inc. in memory of company founder Louis Lockshin. Recipients are chosen on the basis of scholarship and need with preference given to immediate family relatives of the employees.


The Wade D. Luke (‘31) and Beulah E. Luke (‘28 ) Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created through the estate of Beulah Everhard Luke, Class of 1928, to memorialize her and her husband, Wade D. Luke, Class of 1931. Recipients of the Luke Scholarship are chosen by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Awards are based on merit and need.


The Philip P. and Faye Lutz Scholarship Fund
The Philip P. and Faye Lutz Scholarship Foundation was created in 1968 for the purpose of providing scholarship support for undergraduate students at The University of Akron. Determination of award amount and number of recipients will be made by The University Scholarship Committee on the basis of need and scholastic potential. Graduating seniors who received the Lutz Scholarship and, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, used the grant to the University's and the student's best advantage, are eligible to receive an incentive award in an amount to be determined by the Scholarship Committee to pursue graduate studies at The University of Akron.


The Alan L. MacCracken Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 1974 by Mrs. Alan L. MacCracken (Marthena Brewster) of Hudson, Ohio, in honor of her husband, Alan L. MacCracken, Class of 1938, and son, Alan L. MacCracken, Jr. It provides scholarship assistance to a worthy student graduating from Hawken School in Cleveland or Hudson High School. Selection is made on the basis of need and academic record.


The Dr. Ian R. MacGregor Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1985 through the memorial contributions of friends and relatives of Dr. Ian R. MacGregor, who retired in 1982 as vice president emeritus for planning and professor emeritus of chemistry following 21 years of distinguished service as friend, counselor, and administrator. The endowed scholarship fund is used by the University Scholarship Committee to provide tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students. Memorial contributions are welcome.


The Dorothy Garrett Martin Scholarship for Eta Chapter of Delta Gamma
This scholarship was established in 1989 by Paul E. Martin, Class of 1935, and Dorothy Garrett Martin, a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and the Class of 1938. The scholarship was initiated with a $150,000 gift. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to qualified and deserving University of Akron students who are members of the Eta chapter of Delta Gamma Sorority.


The Frederick W. Martin Scholarship for Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Theta
Established in 1985 by Frederick W. Martin with a gift of $5,000, this scholarship provides financial assistance to qualified and deserving University of Akron students who are members of the Ohio Epsilon chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.


The Paul E. Martin Scholarship
The Paul E. Martin Scholarship was funded in 1991 with an initial gift of $300,000 by Dr. Paul E. Martin, University of Akron Class of 1935. The purpose of the Martin Scholarship is to provide financial aid to University of Akron students from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Awards from the scholarship are to be based on merit and need. The University of Akron is pleased to join Youngstown State University and the Trumbull campus of Kent State University in sharing this scholarship.


The Paul E. Martin Scholarship for Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Theta
Established in 1985 by Paul E. Martin, Class of 1935, this endowed scholarship provides financial assistance to qualified and deserving undergraduates who are members of the Ohio Epsilon chapter of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Scholarship awards are allocated by the scholarship committee of the Ohio Epsilon chapter of Phi Delta Theta.


The George W. Mathews Scholarship Fund
The Mathews Fund was established in 1964 by George W. Mathews with income used to provide scholarships to students demonstrating ability, potential, and need. The number of scholarships, recipients, and the amount of aid is determined each year by the University Scholarship Committee with an equal amount going to the University’s current operating fund.


The William A. Mavrides Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 1981 through a contribution from the Hellenic Club of The University of Akron and is being sustained in memory of William A. Mavrides, Class of 1950, associate professor, College of Education, and club adviser. Endowment income is made available to a full time University of Akron student and Hellenic Club member in good standing. All applicants must be undergraduate students of Greek origin and must have demonstrated scholastic ability and possess high qualities of citizenship, moral character, promise, and leadership, as well as be nominated by the Hellenic Club Scholarship Committee by January 1 of each year. Recipients are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.


The William Glenn and Grace S. Mayes Scholarship
The William Glenn and Grace S. Mayes Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for students in the Akron Public Schools and Summit County Schools. Grace Mayes, an Akron Public School teacher, and her husband, Glenn, a chemist for Firestone, held life-long interests in education, especially the need for greater understanding of other peoples and their cultures through travel. Earnings from the scholarship endowment will provide funding for (1) scholarships for students with financial need (two thirds of the funds available) with preference given to freshmen and (2) student study-travel experiences (one third of the funds available) for juniors and seniors at The University of Akron. The scholarship is renewable for those individuals receiving an award in their freshman year. Recipients of the scholarship(s) for Akron Public and County School students will be selected annually by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Recipients of the study-travel funds will be selected by the Office of International Programs.


The Aubrey McDonald Foundation
This scholarship was established in 1991 from the assets of the Aubrey McDonald Foundation. The purpose of this endowed scholarship is to provide financial assistance to qualified and deserving students at The University of Akron. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Originally, the Aubrey McDonald Foundation was established to award scholarship grants for the benefit of qualifying dependents of employees and sales consultants of Aubrey McDonald Creations Inc. of Akron.


The McDonald’s Minority Scholarship
Established in 1991 by McDonald’s Restaurants of Greater Akron, this scholarship fund provides support to talented minority students. McDonald’s restaurants initiated this scholarship to help outstanding minority students further their education at The University of Akron and to encourage increased numbers of minority students to enroll in higher education programs. Scholarship recipients shall be selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and citizenship. The selection process shall be conducted by the University Scholarship Committee with final approval by McDonald’s Restaurants of Greater Akron. Scholarship awards may be provided to entering freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior students. Previous McDonald’s Minority Scholars shall have first preference for future awards from this scholarship fund.
