General Scholarships

The C. Blake McDowell, Sr. Fund
The C. Blake McDowell, Sr. Scholarship was established in 1954 with a $10,000 gift from Mr. C. Blake McDowell. The C. Blake McDowell, Sr. Scholarship shall be awarded to any person attending The University of Akron who is in need of assistance. The University Scholarship Committee will select the recipients of The C. Blake McDowell, Sr. Scholarship.

The Cora M. McFadden Scholarship Fund
The Cora M. McFadden Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 by a gift from Walter W. Born in memory of his wife’s mother. Mr. Born was a successful real estate entrepreneur in Akron. The scholarship(s) benefits University of Akron students deserving financial assistance. The selection shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid and the University Scholarship Committee.

The Frances McGovern Scholarship Fund
The Frances McGovern Scholarship Fund was created in 2004. Ms. McGovern was a 1948 graduate of The University of Akron’s College of Arts and Sciences. After receiving her law degree from Case Western Reserve University, she began a career as an attorney. She served as a state legislator in the 1950’s and was honored in 1960 as the Ohio Democratic Woman of the Year. She was the first woman to chair the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

Ms. McGovern was active in her community and was the first woman elected President of the United Way of Summit County. She served as a trustee of The University of Akron, and of the Akron group Progress through Preservation. She authored two books published by The University of Akron Press. She was a recipient of the St. Thomas Moore Award. The gift from Ms. McGovern provides a fund to be paid or credited to students at The University of Akron who are in need. The principal and interest are to be expended within five years of the date of the receipt of the gift. Awards will be made by the Office of Financial Aid.

The James A. Millar Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund, established in 1975 with provisions from the estate of James A. Millar, Class of 1924, of Waterbury, Connecticut, provides scholarship assistance for undergraduates who are participants in the University’s Honors Program.

The Dorothy Terzian Miller Art Educator Scholarship
Dorothy established The Dorothy Terzian Miller Art Educator Scholarship to benefit students who are studying to teach art education and who have a desire to educate children on the importance of art throughout everyday life. She believes education is the key to success and happiness in life, and art is one of the truest forms of expression

Dorothy Miller graduated from The University of Akron with a degree in education. In addition to being an accomplished artist, she became an art teacher. She taught art in grade schools of the Akron Public School system.

The Ron Mills Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 1982 in memory of Ron Mills, whose zest for life was an inspiration to all his classmates. The scholarship benefits a Copley High School senior who has shown marked improvement academically and has been active in extra curricular programs.

The Art Minson Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The Art Minson Endowed Memorial Scholarship was created in 2007 by friends and family of Art Minson. Art graduated from East High School and worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for forty years. He was married to Eula Belle Minson and had one son. He was an active member of St. John Methodist Episcopal Church and the NAACP.

Art was a special person. He became known as “Mr. East Akron” for his community activism and volunteerism. He was instrumental in starting neighborhood block clubs and helped lay the foundation for the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation to channel money back into the community. He loved the City of Akron and fought for social justice and fair labor. He volunteered for the Millennium Fund for Children and the Dr. Shirla R. McClain Gallery of Black History and Culture at The University of Akron. He received numerous awards including the Howard M. Metzenbaum Ohio Citizen Award and the Volunteer of the year Award for Coming Together.

Recipients of the Art Minson Endowed Memorial Scholarship must be enrolled full time at The University of Akron, have financial need, and maintain a GPA of at least 2.0. They must have demonstrated community involvement. They must be from Akron or a neighboring community, with preference given to graduates of an Akron public high school. Candidates will be nominated by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Each candidate will be interviewed by the Art Minson Endowed Scholarship Committee who will make the final selection.

The Edith Delaney Mitchell Endowed Scholarship
The Edith Delaney Mitchell Scholarship was established in 1975 by Zeta Theta Omega Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in honor of the first black graduate from Teacher's College of The University of Akron, class of 1933. It is awarded annually to a minority female undergraduate who is a full time student (minimum of 12 hours) in her sophomore, junior or first semester senior year, who exhibits high ethical standards, indicates a financial need and holds a scholastic average of 3.0 or better average among those eligible for consideration. The chapter's Scholarship Committee interviews candidates recommended by The University of Akron and determines the recipient.

The Robert G. and Kathleen K. Moorefield Endowment
Robert G. and Kathleen Karr Moorefield established this fund with the objective of helping The University of Akron prepare deserving youth for a responsible, productive life in a competitive world.

Kitty and Bob met as freshmen at The University of Akron and grew together in the atmosphere of the then small university. Kitty graduated in 1944 with a B.S. degree in Education, and Bob graduated in 1947 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration—delayed three years by his World War II military service. Warm memories of The University of Akron include Kitty’s election as May Queen and Bob’s election as President of the Lone Star Fraternity in their respective senior years. Bob was recruited on campus by the FBI. After his training by the organization, Kit and Bob were married in Akron and set out to serve in Miami, New York City, California, and Washington, D.C. They retired from government service to second careers in cattle raising and real estate investment in the foothills of Virginia.

Scholarships from this fund are to be awarded to students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree, with preference to students who have served honorably in any branch of the United States military services, and a preference given to active members of the Lone Star Fraternity who are in good standing. Recipients are to be in their sophomore year or above, with selection based on academic standing and financial need.

The Herman Muehlstein Fund for Scholarship Aid
Earnings from an endowed fund established by the Herman Muehlstein Foundation of New York provide scholarships for qualified students at the University who come from the New York City area.

The Office of Multicultural Development Book Scholarship
The Multicultural Development Book Scholarship was initiated in 2003 from contributions received through the first annual Office of Multicultural Development’s Awards Dinner. The purpose of the dinner is to publicly acknowledge the achievements and contributions of University of Akron students and alumni representing diverse populations. Additionally, individuals, organizations, or agencies external to the University are honored for impacting the lives of students of color at the University. The event emphasizes the importance of academic excellence, civic responsibility, and the impact of educational diversity. The funds generated from this event provide scholarship assistance to deserving students enrolled in a program offered through the Office of Multicultural Development.

In awarding the scholarships, a selection committee comprised of the Office of Multicultural Development staff and a selected staff member from the Financial Aid office will consider students based on socioeconomic factors, fulltime enrollment status and grade point average. Continuing students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and first-year students must have a minimum 2.3 high school grade point average.

Each recipient’s academic progress will be reviewed at the end of the semester. If the full-time enrollment status is not met, students will be required to return the scholarship funds dispersed. Failure to do so will result in a financial hold on the student’s account.

The Council of Negro Women's Endowment Fund for Educational Awards
In keeping with the council's theme, "Know thyself, learn more, and climb higher," this endowed educational fund was established in 1981 by the Council of Negro Women of Akron. The purpose of the fund is to provide earnings annually for the assistance of eligible African-American students from Summit County attending The University of Akron. Selection of recipients is made by The Council of Negro Women's Scholarship Committee in concert with the Office of Student Financial Aid at The University of Akron. The Council of Negro Women of Akron established this fund in memory of our founders.

The New Center Associates Scholarship
New Center Associates, a voluntary, nonprofit association, established this scholarship in 1990 91. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of financial need to a junior or senior full time student with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00. This scholarship may be used toward tuition, room, board, student and class fees, books, course materials, or other University expenses. The recipient shall be selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Dr. George R. Newkome and Dr. Mary Jane Saunders Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. George R. Newkome and Dr. Mary Jane Saunders Endowed Scholarship was established in 2004 by George R. Newkome and Mary Jane Saunders. These two individuals are celebrating a lifelong commitment to the field of education and the student’s lives that they have helped change over the past 40 years.

Dr. George R. Newkome is an educational entrepreneur willing to take a chance on the potential of people. He graduated High School from St. Vincent/St. Mary’s High School in Akron, Ohio. Following High School, Dr. Newkome went on to pursue a very ambitious career in higher education, including degrees and appointments at the following institutions: B.S., 1961, Ph.D., 1966, Kent State University; Postdoctoral Fellow, 1966-68, Princeton University, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, 1968-72, Associate Professor of Chemistry, 1972-78; Professor of Chemistry, 1978-86, Louisiana State University, Professor of Chemistry, 1986-2001; Distinguished Research Professor, 1992-2001, University of South Florida.

Currently, Dr. Newkome contributes his excellence and education to The University of Akron as Interim Dean, College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and Vice President for Research & Dean of the Graduate School. He is also a Professor of Chemistry and Polymer Science, an Intellectual Property Center Fellow and is the James and Vanita Oelschlager Professor of Science and Technology.

Dr. Mary Jane Saunders is making a difference at Cleveland State University as Provost. She also has a long and distinguished career in education, including degrees and appointments at: B.A., 1972, Boston University; M.S. 1980, Ph.D. 1982, University of Massachusetts; Postdoctoral Fellow, 1982-83, University of Georgia; Assistant Professor, Louisiana State University, 1983-86; Assistant, Associate Professor, University of South Florida, 1986-2003.

As Interim Dean and Director of the Biomedical and Health Institute, Dr. Saunders enhanced and integrated the areas of biomedical and health sciences at Cleveland State University, with the aims of promoting research and education, of addressing critical biomedical and health issues, and of fostering regional economic development.

The purpose of the scholarship is to make an award to a deserving student. First preference will be given to a graduate from St. Vincent/St. Mary’s High School in Akron, Ohio. The award will be based on merit and financial need.

Both Dr. Newkome and Dr. Saunders have strong convictions to the field of education. For such devotion, the University is grateful and proud that they have established this scholarship for The University of Akron.

The Dr. Daniel M. Newland Student Affairs Scholarship Fund
The Dr. Daniel M. Newland Student Affairs Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 in memory of Dr. Daniel M. Newland. Dr. Newland was a member of the University family for 30 years and earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University in 1987. His career at The University of Akron was one of service to students. At the time of his death, Dr. Newland was the assistant vice president and dean of students and an instructor in the Department of Sociology. Dr. Newland’s previous posts included advisor of students, student development coordinator and assistant dean of University College. Selection of the scholarship recipient(s) will be made by the Dr. Daniel M. Newland Student Affairs Scholarship Fund Selection Committee based on the following qualities and criteria: applicants must have completed at least one academic year of study and accumulated at least thirty semester hours of credit at The University of Akron; a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at The University of Akron is required; a significant contribution(s) in service to students at the University must be documented. Applications should include a written statement from the applicant (100-200 words) indicating the service contribution that s/he has made on behalf of our students. Documentation could include, but is not limited to, letters/certificates of recognition; reference letters from faculty, administrators, and/or advisors, etc. The scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable scholarship. The Office of Student Financial Aid will award the scholarships.

The Dale A. Normington Scholarship Fund
The Dale A. Normington Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by Karen Hengle Normington, Class of 1966, as a gift to her husband and from their children, Mark R. Normington, Kristen Normington Thomas and Gene G. Thomas. Mr. Normington received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Akron in 1966 and a Juris Doctorate from The University of Akron School of Law in 1969. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Alpha Delta, and Phi Sigma Alpha honorary societies, and Army ROTC. Mr. Normington has served as Associate General Counsel for Sherwin-Williams Company since 1995. Mr. Normington is listed in the Law & Business Directory of Corporate Counsel.

Mr. and Mrs. Normington are members of the President’s Club of the John R. Buchtel Society and have provided meaningful support to the Intercollegiate Athletics program and to the School of Law.

The Dale A. Normington Scholarship Fund recognizes Mr. and Mrs. Normington’s commitment to The University of Akron and the value of the education they received as students. The scholarship award will be given to students enrolled at The University of Akron with financial need. The Dale A. Normington Scholarship will be awarded by the Office of Financial Aid at The University of Akron.

The Ohio Epsilon of Phi Delta Theta Scholarship Fund
Established in 1982 by the Ohio Epsilon of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity in memory of Verlin P. Jenkins, Class of 1924, this endowed scholarship fund supports deserving full time undergraduates who are active members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at the University.

The Eugene O’Neil Scholarship
Proceeds from this endowment fund, established by Eugene O’Neil, Class of 1936, of Babson Park, Massachusetts, provide scholarships for qualified students from St. Vincent St. Mary High School in Akron.

The Hugh Michael O’Neil Scholarship
Originally established in 1959 as the Ferdinand A. and Lorry Brubaker Scholarship, this fund now honors Hugh Michael O’Neil, who lost his life in a heroic attempt to save the lives of others in July 1964. The income is used to render financial assistance to students selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Papich Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund, established in 1976 by Mr. and Mrs. Kosta M. Papich of Barberton, provides financial assistance for needy full time undergraduates. Recipients and amount of scholarship aid are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Caroline J. Pardee Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Caroline J. Pardee Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in June 1981 by alumni, friends and colleagues in honor of Caroline J. Pardee, Class of 1932. The contributions were made in recognition of Miss Pardee’s retirement after 28-1/2 years of devoted service to the University as secretary to two Presidents and, for eight years, as administrative assistant to the President. Endowment earnings are to be used annually to support scholarships in the undergraduate Honors Program. Scholarship recipients are to be determined by the University Scholarship Committee. Contributions to The Caroline J. Pardee Endowed Scholarship Fund are welcomed.

The Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)/ Harold Sylvester Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the local chapter of the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) to support students at The University of Akron. The national PFLAG organization offers information and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals and their families. It is PFLAG’s preference to make their scholarship available to students participating in University organizations for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students. Selection is to be based on academic achievement and financial need.

Scholarship applications will be sent to the appropriate campus organizations. Selection will be made by Office of Student Financial Aid based on the established criteria.

The University of Akron Partners in Excellence Corporate Scholarships
Scholarships for qualified students are available from unrestricted funds provided by the corporations and foundations that hold membership in The University of Akron Partners in Excellence Program.

The Lemuel G. Pence Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship in memory of Lemuel G. Pence was established in 1973 by his wife Ethel V. Pence. Annual awards are made to students selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. -- Milton G. Smith Endowed Scholarship
This endowed fund was established in 1997 by Delta Rho Sigma, the Akron Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in support of undergraduate academic excellence. The purpose of the scholarship is to honor Milton G. Smith, a dedicated member and unsung hero for his long time meritorious service and behind the scenes work at the local, regional and national levels of the Fraternity. Phi Beta Sigma was founded in 1914 and has been dedicated to community service through the application of education, business development, and working with young people. Delta Rho Sigma has shown its commitment to youth programs through the development of the Sigma Beta Club which encourages junior and senior males to pursue personal development in the areas of leadership, commitment to the community, and cultural and social awareness.

The endowed scholarship is open to students pursuing a four-year degree in any major. The student is required to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average throughout four years at the University. Preference may be granted to active or prospective members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, but membership is not a requirement. Final selection of the recipient shall be determined by the Delta Rho Sigma Chapter of the Fraternity in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Pi Kappa Epsilon Lone Star Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to qualified and deserving University of Akron students who are members of the Pi Kappa Epsilon Lone Star Fraternity hereinafter known as "Lone Star." Scholarship award shall be allocated by the scholarship committee of the Lone Star Alumni Association and shall cover tuition, fees, books, room and board, all or in part.
