General Scholarships Department of Development The Matthew M. Tallal Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1976 by Home Center Inc. in honor of founder Matthew M. Tallal upon his retirement as chairman of the board following 25 years of devoted service to the company. The fund provides scholarship aid covering tuition for full time undergraduate students. Recipients and amount of scholarships awarded are determined by the University Scholarship Committee with first preference accorded students from the Summit County Children's Home.
The Terzian Family Scholarship
Dorothy Miller established the scholarship in memory of her twin brother, Samuel Terzian. Dorothy and Samuel grew up in Akron. Samuel was enlisted in the armed forces and was a casualty in World War II. His name is inscribed on Memorial Hall with those from Summit County that gave their lives for their country. Dorothy Miller established this scholarship to honor the memory of her brother, and her support for education which she believes is the key to success and happiness in life. She graduated from The University of Akron with a degree in education. In addition to being an accomplished artist, she became an art teacher. She taught art in grade schools of the Akron Public School system.
The Verna Trushel Displaced Homemaker Scholarship
This scholarship is provided to support a displaced homemaker who desires to enhance academic skills and employment opportunities. A committee selected for its expertise regarding the needs of displaced homemakers awards these funds with the counsel of the University’s financial aid office. Candidates are chosen on the basis of a written request stating career goals, timetable for completion of goals, and the proposed use of the funds requested. Funds may be used for both educational and personal expenses. Special consideration is given to individuals entering the workforce as a result of becoming a displaced homemaker.
Gary T. and Carol A. (’86) Ubelhart Scholarship
The Gary T. and Carol A. (’86) Ubelhart Scholarship was established in 2002 by Linda A. and Paul A. Herold in honor of Linda’s parents, Gary T. and Carol A. Ubelhart. Three of the Ubelharts’ children hold degrees from The University of Akron, as did Mrs. Ubelhart. The Ubelharts strongly believed in the value of hard work, independent thinking and education. This scholarship is intended to provide to others the opportunities for growth that the Ubelharts helped provide to their children.
The scholarship is granted at the discretion of the donors, with attention given to academic and co-curricular achievement and financial need. The $1,000 scholarship will be presented annually to an undergraduate student.
The United Way Women’s Board Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 1991 by the United Way Women’s Board. The scholarship fund provides two scholarships to talented University of Akron students majoring in sociology, social work, psychology, education, communicative disorders, community services technology, educational technology, or handicapped services. The recipients may be male or female students with demonstrated financial need and a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or above. Preference shall be given to nontraditional students and to students working in a social service area for a minimum of 20 hours per week. The scholarship recipients shall be selected by the United Way Women’s Board in cooperation with The University of Akron Office of Student Financial Aid.
The USX Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund
The USX Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund was created by a grant from the USX Corporation. Merit scholarships for deserving students are available annually with preference given to children of employees of USX Corporation and its eligible subsidiaries who plan to enroll in a business-related program. The scholarships are renewable.
The University of Akron Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship
The University of Akron Alumni Association established the Legacy Scholarship program in 2001 through its governing body the National Alumni Board. The Legacy Scholarship assists new freshmen or currently enrolled University of Akron students who are the children or grandchildren of alumni. The scholarship symbolizes appreciation for our many alumni who have contributed to the growth and enrichment of The University of Akron.
The award is open to any returning, full-time undergraduate student or admitted and entering full-time freshman whose parent, grandparent or guardian is an alumnus of The University of Akron. Assistance is not available for graduate study. Financial need may be considered, but is not necessary to receive the award. Preference will be given to entering freshmen in the top 20 percent of their high school classes at the completion of the seventh semester, and to undergraduate applicants with a 3.0 accumulative grade point average or better.
The University of Akron Memorial Scholarship Fund
The fund was established by the University to receive contributions from individuals, corporations, and organizations in memory of cherished friends and colleagues. Recipients are determined by the University Scholarship Committee.
The Association of University of Akron Retirees’ Scholarship
The Association of The University of Akron Retirees’ Scholarship was created in March 2007. It is the intention of the Association of The University of Akron Retirees to endow this scholarship and to continue to build upon it with yearly fundraising.
The Association of The University of Akron Retirees will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2008. The group is comprised of The University of Akron retirees who wish to continue their involvement in the life of the University and its students. The group meets for social, educational and advocacy purposes and its members support and enrich the University in many ways.
The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and some degree of financial need, but who is ineligible for federal or state need-based grant assistance. Additional criteria to be considered are community involvement and a strong work ethic. The scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Association of The University of Akron Retirees’ Selection Committee in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Final selection will be made by the Committee. Consideration will be given to rotation among colleges and the scholarship is renewable.
The Dr. and Mrs. George Van Buren Endowed Scholarship Fund
As life-long residents of Akron, Dr. and Mrs. George Van Buren share a commitment to their alma mater and their community. Believing that each person should have the opportunity to fulfill his or her dreams and goals and that education affords that opportunity, Dr. and Mrs. Van Buren have established the following four (4) scholarship awards designed to assist students in various phases of their education:
The Van Buren Akron Public High School Scholarship
One graduate from each Akron public high school, who has been accepted for the fall semester at the University, is selected annually as the recipient of this scholarship. The scholarship recipients must have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, leadership, and financial need. Selection of the graduating seniors is made by the school's teachers and counselors, in conjunction with the Van Buren family.
The Van Buren NEOUCOM Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate senior student, of high academic standing, who is enrolled in the University as a participant in the six (6)-year BS/MD Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) program. Selection is made by a BS/MD screening committee, in coordination with The University of Akron Scholarship Committee.
The Van Buren Medical School Scholarship
A physician who was dedicated to his profession and his patients, Dr. Van Buren commenced his 39 years in practice after receiving his undergraduate degree in Biology from The University of Akron, his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, his Master's degree in surgery from The Ohio State University School of Medicine and serving as a surgeon in the United States Army. Dr. Van Buren has been honored for his research, during his surgical residency at Akron Children's Medical Center, which led to the cure for osteomyelitis.
In 1967, Dr. Van Buren and his wife, Mary, established this scholarship which is awarded to a graduating senior of high academic and personal standing, who has been accepted to an accredited medical school in the United States and has exhibited the desire to practice compassionate and skilled medicine. Selection is made by the head of the Department Biology, in coordination with The University of Akron Scholarship Committee.
The Mary Van Buren Scholarship
Mary Van Buren received her undergraduate degree in elementary education from The University of Akron, Class of 1939, and completed graduate courses in education at The Ohio State University. A former elementary school teacher in the Columbus and Akron Public School systems, Mary Van Buren and her husband, George, established this annual award to provide tuition assistance to a worthy student who is entering the senior year of study in the field of elementary education. Selection is made by the faculty of the Department of College of Education, in coordination with The University of Akron Scholarship Committee.
The Edward and Eleanor Voke Family Scholarship
This scholarship is available to full time and part time students enrolled at the University who have demonstrated scholastic ability, good citizenship, promise, and leadership and who have financial need.
The Richard L. Waldman Sr. Scholarship Fund
The Richard L. Waldman Sr. Scholarship Fund was established by William and Lesley Waldman in memory of his father. Mr. Waldman was born in Toledo, Ohio, and following graduation from Buchtel High School in 1939, he served in World War II and married Dorothy May Robinson in 1943. Mr. Waldman had a long and distinguished business career starting with the H. Muehlstein Company and retiring as an executive with the A. Schulman Company. For the people whose lives he touched, he was the best. He was gregarious, courageous, determined and a dedicated father with a special love for his family and friends. Throughout his life, Mr. Waldman was known for his intelligence and his wit that made people feel good to be in his presence. He pursued learning opportunities and instilled an appreciation of education into his children and grandchildren.
The Richard L. Waldman, Sr. Scholarship will be awarded annually with first preference given to a student who has graduated from an Akron Public High School. The recipient must evidence excellent ethical and moral behavior and an interest in learning. The recipient must have a 3.0 minimum grade point average from high school and maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher as an undergraduate student at The University of Akron. The scholarship award can be renewed upon application but is not necessarily renewed annually.
Henrietta S. West Memorial Scholarship for Presidential and Honors Scholarship Programs
This was established in October, 1992, through a bequest by Henrietta S. West. Mrs. West was a friend of The University of Akron. Recipients of the Henrietta S. West Memorial Scholarship qualify as Honors or Presidential Scholars at The University of Akron. The award recipients are determined by the Director of the Honors Program in cooperation with the University Scholarship Committee.
The Reginald White Memorial Scholarship Fund
This memorial scholarship fund was established in 1978 by the Alpha Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as a loving tribute to the memory of Brother Reginald White whose life was tragically lost during a cave exploration in West Virginia. Two incoming freshmen are to be selected annually by the University Scholarship Committee as Reginald White Scholars without restriction as to race, color, creed, sex or national origin. Academic achievement, financial need, personality and commitment to the individual improvement are to be considered in the selection of the recipient.
The Marnie Whitmer Turnaround Student Scholarship
This Scholarship was established by Marnie E. Whitmer to support students who, through the course of high school, develop an appreciation for the importance of education. As a result, the individuals display a "turnaround" from being underachieving students to having a personal motivation to equip themselves with a college education in order to better pursue their life goals.
The Marnie Whitmer Turnaround Student Scholarship is to be awarded annually to an incoming freshman or a current University student from North High School in Akron who plans to study full-time at The University of Akron, demonstrates financial need, and meets the purpose described above. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with a scholarship committee composed of North High School counselors and/or teachers. The Scholarship, renewable for four years, is to include full tuition, books, and fees if the student maintains a 2.5 (on a 4.0 grade point system) grade point average. The recipient is to be a North High School student or, in the absence of a suitable applicant, a student from any public high school in the Akron area.
Gladys Wicks Memorial Scholarship Fund
An endowment fund, established in 1978 under the terms of the Will of Gladys Wicks of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, provides four-year tuition support for a high school senior who preferably is a relative of someone currently employed by or retired from organized labor. Selection of the recipient is made by the University scholarship committee. Should the student selected fail to complete the four year course of study, or should the scholarship on the four-year basis lapse or fail for any reason, then the income for such period of time of lapse or failure shall become a part of the scholarship principle and no further scholarship shall be awarded until after the passage of four years from the original date of the scholarship reward.
