Serving there until his retirement in 1970, Mr. Williams was instrumental in organizing the Postal Employees Credit Union and was also active in the American Association of Retired Persons. In 1980 Mr. Williams developed an avid interest in painting, which he pursued for many years. His paintings were well received at numerous showings. Mr. Williams enjoyed the company of many friends at Rockynol Apartments where he lived in his last years. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The Patricia B. and Willis S. Zeigler Jr. Honors Scholarship
In the interest of building a greater University of Akron, Patricia and Willis Zeigler Jr. established an endowed fund in support of the University. Mr. and Mrs. Zeigler are long-standing members of the University family. Mr. Zeigler is a retired executive of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and taught in the College of Business Administration. Mrs. Zeigler has held leadership roles in numerous community organizations, including President of the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Zeigler believe that like other important American universities, Akron must have adequate endowment funds to continue its commitment to teaching, research, and public service. The fund shall be used to foster academic excellence through The Patricia B. and Willis S. Zeigler Jr. Honors Scholarship.

Recipients of The Patricia B. and Willis S. Zeigler Jr. Honors Scholarship must be full-time students enrolled in the Honors Program from any college, and are to be selected solely on the basis of academic accomplishments. The standards for selection have been purposefully set high. It is required that a recipient will have a score of at least 30 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT and a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA at the end of each semester. The scholarship may be awarded to incoming freshmen or returning undergraduates and is renewable each year of undergraduate studies, as long as the required academic standards are met. Recipients will be considered without regard to race, color, or creed. Financial need is not a consideration in determining eligibility for this scholarship. The Honors Program in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid will select recipients and introduce them to Mr. and Mrs. Zeigler. The Honors Program will monitor and review recipients to be certain they meet the required standards for scholarship renewal.
