Department of Development College of Business Administration The Accountancy Board of Ohio Scholarships
The Accountancy Board of Ohio established these scholarships at The University of Akron due to the successful passing of the CPA exam. The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy annually receives funds from the Accountancy Board of Ohio to support 5th year accounting students. Monies are determined by the success rate in passing the CPA examination. The Accountancy Board of Ohio Scholarships are awarded to students who are enrolled in the fifth year program which will qualify the candidate to take the CPA examination, as defined in paragraph (D) of rule 4701-17-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code. The student must also be academically in good standing as defined by the College of University. The College or University may specify additional criteria, at its discretion, which must be met by its students. Selection of the scholarship recipients will be made at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Accounting.
Advertising Club of Akron's Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship is awarded to a full-time junior or senior student who is majoring in marketing, preferably in advertising, and has graduated from a high school located in Summit, Portage, or Medina county. The scholarship recipient is selected by the University Scholarship Committee. The Board of Directors of the Advertising Club of Akron receives the name of the recipient before the selection is announced.
The Akron Brick and Block Company Founders Memorial Scholarships
This endowed fund, established in 1967 by the Akron Brick and Block Company in memory of company founders Henry Camp, Kenneth Kutz, Albert A. Hilkert, and George H. Meyers, provides scholarships to students with serious financial need. Preference is given to students in the fields of engineering or business administration who are Summit County residents.
Akron Tax Club Scholarship
The Akron Tax Club created The Akron Tax Club Scholarship to benefit students enrolled in the Master of Tax program at The University of Akron College of Business Administration. The organization wishes to assist students pursuing an advanced degree in taxation and to expose students to the professional tax community in Akron. The Akron Tax Club scholar(s) should be students in the Master of Tax program. The Akron Tax Club scholar(s) can be full or part-time students. The scholarship award is to cover tuition and book expenses for qualified students. The scholarship is not available to School of Law students taking classes in taxation. Scholarship recipients cannot be eligible for a tuition reimbursement program from their employer. Faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy will determine the scholarship recipients.
The Dr. Frank V. Baldo Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Frank V. Baldo, a retired College of Business Administration faculty member, established this endowed scholarship in 2002 to benefit graduate students the Marketing program.
Dr. Baldo was a member of the faculty from 1968 until his retirement in 1979. Orphaned at an early age, Dr. Baldo overcame shyness and insecurities to pursue his undergraduate degree, and ultimately, his doctorate degree. Motivated by the belief in the importance of higher education, it is Dr. Baldo’s wish that his scholarship benefit graduate students with a proven record of high academic achievement who are pursuing an advanced degree despite demonstrated financial need.
The Joyce Wortman Barnett Kappa Kappa Gamma Scholarship Fund
Established in 1987, this scholarship provides assistance to one student each year who is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Qualifications considered as a basis in the selection include maintaining at least a B average, having financial need and preferably be a student in the College of Business Administration. Selection of the recipient is determined by the University Scholarship Committee upon recommendation of the Kappa Advisory Board.
The Fund also provides scholarship assistance to women enrolled in the College of Business Administration who are engaged in classes in the Global Institute. The student should be pursuing coursework in international business.
The Becker CPA Review Scholarship in Accounting
The Becker CPA Review Scholarship in the George W. Daverio School in Accountancy at the College of Business Administration is to be awarded to three outstanding senior accounting majors for the Becker CPA Review course.
The Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in
Accounting
The Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in Accounting was created in December, 2006. Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua are both proud graduates of The University of Akron; Frank received a B.A. in mathematics and an MBA in 1972 and Marie received a Master’s degree in Elementary Education in 1974. Frank is President of Winer and Bevilacqua, an accounting firm in Akron, OH. Marie taught elementary school in Akron and later taught religious school at St. Hilary. The Bevilacquas have three grown children.
The Bevilacquas are strong believers in education and in giving back to their University and to their community.
Recipients of the Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in Accounting must be enrolled in the College of Business, majoring in Accounting. They must maintain a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and be Ohio residents with demonstrated financial need. Decisions shall be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Eleanor Christoff Bodurow Award
This award is provided by Mrs. Eleanor C. Bodurow, a 1948 graduate of The University of Akron. Upon graduation, she received an award from the John S. Knight Endowment that enabled her to attend the Management Training Program, later the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration graduate school at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Now, women are accepted directly into the Harvard Business School. This was a wonderful experience for Mrs. Bodurow and has inspired her to provide her assistance to offer the same opportunity to a graduating student at The University of Akron. The Eleanor Christoff Bodurow Award is to be presented to a woman graduating from The University of Akron College of Business Administration who has been accepted by, and plans to pursue, graduate studies at the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. The award is made by the office of student financial aid together with the College of Business Administration.
The Madeline Bozzelli Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is majoring in marketing, public relations or one of the fine arts—music, dance, theatre or art. The scholarship was established in 1999 by Libert Bozzelli to recognize his wife’s life-long community involvement and her interest in education. Because of their volunteerism, the Bozzelli’s wish to encourage University of Akron students to become involved in their University and community. The annual scholarship will be given to a full-time undergraduate student, regardless of need, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Recipients must have demonstrated involvement in University organizations and in their community. The University’s Scholarship Committee will select the recipient in cooperation with the Dean of the College of Business Administration and the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
The Jeffrey R. Brashares Endowed Scholarship
The Jeffrey R. Brashares Endowed Scholarship was created through the generosity of Mr. Jeffrey R. Brashares, President of Rail Van, Inc. Mr. Brashares, class of 1972, has long recognized the importance of higher education. This scholarship represents Mr. Brashares’ commitment to the success of students at The University of Akron. The scholarship is to be awarded with preference given to a student in the supply chain management program in the College of Business Administration. If no applicants meet these requirements, preference can be deferred to general management majors with a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. The selection of the recipient will be determined by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee and Mr. Brashares.
The Jeffrey R. Brashares Endowed Scholarship in Entrepreneurship
This scholarship represents Mr. Brashares’ commitment to the success of students pursuing advanced studies in entrepreneurship, as well as his commitment to The University of Akron. To be considered for this scholarship, candidates must major in Entrepreneurship and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher. Selection of the recipient will be determined by the Dean of the College of Business Administration and Mr. Brashares.
The Mrs. Margaret (Zink) Brewster Scholarship in International Business
This Scholarship was established in 2001 by Mrs. Margaret (Zink) Brewster ’25 and the Brewster family. This scholarship is to be awarded to academically talented students at The University of Akron pursuing degrees in International Business. Scholarships are to be awarded to students selected by the academic program based on scholarship and character.
The Thomas A. Brewster Scholarship Fund
Marketing students selected by the dean of the College of Business Administration are the recipients of the annual income from this fund established by Evan B. Brewster in 1978 to honor his youngest son, Thomas A. Brewster, Class of 1958.
Bacari K. Brown Sales Scholarship
The Bacari K. Brown Sales Scholarship, established in April 2007, but awarded in 2006, was created to financially support students in the Ronald R. and Diane C. Fisher Institute for Professional Selling in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. Bacari K. Brown received a BSBA in Marketing Management in 2003 from The University of Akron. Bacari is a stellar sales professional with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Recipient must be a full-time student in good standing with the Institute, exhibit noticeable financial need, and preferably have a strong GPA. The student’s character is of utmost importance. The recipient must be tenacious, charismatic, hard-working, and goal-oriented. He or she must be aware that the college learning experience takes place both inside and outside of the classroom and be able to stand out in a crowd.
The scholarship recipient will be selected by Brown and/or the Director of the Fisher Institute for Professional Selling. The recipient will receive one half of the award in the fall term and the remaining half in the spring term. The scholarship can be awarded through the recipient’s senior year, if applicable.
The Brunswick/Sigrist Endowed Scholarship
The Robert C. Sigrist, Class of 1959, retired president of the defense division of Brunswick Corporation, established this endowed scholarship in 1995 through The Brunswick Foundation.
Mr. Sigrist earned his B.S.B.A. by attending the University at night and working full-time until a year before graduation. During that year, Mr. Sigrist attended the University full-time to complete his degree. To assist and encourage College of Business Administration students to complete a business degree, The Brunswick/Sigrist Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an upper classperson (sophomore, junior, or senior) in the College of Business who has demonstrated high achievement in both leadership and scholarship without regard for financial need. The scholarship is awarded for the duration of the student's academic program, provided he or she maintain a 3.0 (out of a possible 4.0) average and carry at least 10 hours. Priority will be given to students who are employed at least part time while attending the College of Business Administration and whole educational objective is to work in the industry and business community upon graduation.
The Burger Iron Company Scholarship Fund
Established in 1982 by The Burger Iron Company in tribute to the Alma Mater of company president, Robert O. Williamson, Class of 1939, this scholarship fund provides financial assistance for deserving undergraduate students.
Applicants are chosen on the basis of academic standing and need. Awards are to be made to deserving undergraduates majoring in Business Administration. Selection is not limited in any way by race, color, creed, sex or national origin. Recipients and amounts awarded are determined by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee.
The Kenneth Fahs Burkins Endowed Scholarship
Kenneth Fahs Burkins graduated from The University of Akron in 1975 with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. He joined Akron Porcelain and Plastics Company in 1977 and currently serves as its Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Ken has been actively involved with his alma mater as a past president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and its House Corporation, member of University Council, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Order of Omega and his Senior Class Board. Ken is a charter member of the College of Business Administration Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies Advisory Board, and past chair of the CBA Alumni Board. He also actively participates in the College’s Professor for a Day program. As a gift to her son and in recognition of his personal and professional success, Kenneth’s mother, Evelyn Fahs Burkins, established this scholarship.
Awards are to be based equally on academic merit and financial need, and leadership in college and community activities. Selection is to be made by the College of Business Administration scholarship committee in concert with the Office of Financial Aid but reviewed by Ken Burkins or a designated family member before announced or presented.
The College of Business Administration Alumni Association Scholarship Fund
The College of Business Administration Alumni Association Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 with an allocation from the Presidential Sunrise Breakfast. The award is made to the presidents of each student organization within the College of Business Administration to fund their participation in the annual Student Organization Leadership Workshop.
The CBIZ / Mayer Hoffman McCann Scholarship Fund in Accounting
The CBIZ / Mayer Hoffman McCann Scholarship Fund in Accounting was established in 2004 by CBIZ / Mayer Hoffman McCann. The scholarship will be awarded to a third-year student to be used towards their fourth-year tuition. The recipient must have an overall grade point average of 3.0, with the student earning 20% of their tuition.
The Elinor and Delmar A. Christensen Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is provided by the estate of Delmar A. Christensen, a 1940 graduate of the University, in memory of Elinor and Delmar A. Christensen. The fund is self-perpetuating and is to be used for students enrolled in both the College of Business Administration and the ROTC program at The University of Akron.
The Christian Values in Business Endowed Scholarship
The Christian Values in Business Endowed Scholarship was established in 1998 by Ronald W. and Beverly J. Ocasek, alumni of the University. The scholarship was established by the Ocaseks to reward aspiring young business people who show definite promise of Christian service in the business community.
The Christian Values in Business Endowed Scholarship provides tuition assistance to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration. These scholarships are to be awarded to students who are active members of a Christian church in Summit County, who demonstrate an exemplary spiritual life, and show definite promise of Christian service in the business community. Applicants should be students who maintain good academic records and receive a recommendation from their local pastor. To remain eligible for the scholarship the student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average at The University of Akron.
Cohen and Company Scholarship in Accounting Description
The Cohen and Company Scholarship Award, established in 2004, was created to financially support students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient will have the following qualifications:
A junior accounting student who has maintained an accounting GPA between 3.2 and above, has financial need and has exhibited strength in the following areas: leadership, presentation skills, overall accounting knowledge and understanding.
The Coopers & Lybrand Scholarship Award
Established in 1976 by Coopers & Lybrand, this award provides scholarships to two outstanding juniors in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. Scholastic achievement and leadership characteristics are the criteria for the award.
The Allen S. Crum Scholarship Fund
The Allen S. Crum Scholarship Fund is to support a native of Ohio who is an accounting student in the College of Business Administration. The student should have a 3.00 or better grade-point average. The Allen S. Crum Scholarship(s) is renewable while the student recipient(s) is in good academic standing and meets the described qualifications.
Georgianna Catherine Dedrick Scholarship Fund
With a gift from her estate, the late Georgianna C. Dedrick established the Georgianna Catherine Dedrick Scholarship Fund in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. Ms. Dedrick graduated from the University in 1961 at the age of 46. She also earned an undergraduate degree in Industrial Management and an MA from California State University. Ms. Dedrick spent 28 years with Republic Steel, from the age of 19 until she earned her degree from The University of Akron. Upon earning her degree, she left Ohio to teach business education courses in the California public school system. She returned to Ohio in 1990 and resided in Mansfield until her death in 2003. Ms. Dedrick’s scholarship will provide tuition assistance to students in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration MBA program.
The Deloitte & Touche Alumni Scholarship
The Deloitte & Touche Alumni Scholarship was established by alumni of The University of Akron who are employed by Deloitte & Touche. Alumni initiated this scholarship to reflect their strong belief in the value of higher education. Recipients are determined by a faculty committee with preference given to students with a high grade?point average and/or significant contributions to campus activities.
The Deloitte & Touche John P. Brown Memorial Scholarship
The Deloitte & Touche John P. Brown Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997 by Deloitte & Touche LLP and the family of John P. Brown to honor his memory. John P. Brown graduated from The University of Akron in 1991 with a B.S.A. in accounting and joined Deloitte Touche LLP, where he became a senior accountant. He was an active member of the Delta Sigma Pi (Business) Fraternity. This endowed scholarship is to be based on merit and awarded annually to an exceptional student majoring, or with a stated intent to major, in accounting and is renewable. Selection of the recipient will be determined by the chairperson of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy with a preference given to freshmen or sophomore students.
The Deloitte & Touche Scholarships
Two scholarships are provided by the firm of Deloitte & Touche to outstanding juniors majoring in accounting as selected by the faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.
The Don and Jeri Dixon Scholarship in Accounting
This scholarship was established by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Donald A. Dixon, Jr. Don Dixon is a successful alumnus of the College of Business Administration Accounting program. The Dixons' endowed scholarship is for the benefit of "new majority" accounting students. Don Dixon completed his education while employed and when he and Jeri were beginning a family. For this reason, they can appreciate the challenge faced by students and have offered their assistance. It is the Dixons' request that recipients consider providing philanthropic support for accounting student scholarships when they have established careers.
Scholarship assistance is to be awarded to an outstanding student in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy based on academic achievement and need. Selection of the recipient will be made by the department chair in the School with the assistance of the Office of Student Financial Aid. The donor requests one annual recipient be elected to receive an award amount, up to the full cost of tuition, books, and fees. If additional funds are available, they are to be awarded in the same manner until all the award funds are expended.
The Robert E. Donovan Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in memory of Robert E. Donovan by family and friends in remembrance of Mr. Donovan's belief in the value of education. The fund provides at least one undergraduate and one graduate scholarship award annually. The amount of the undergraduate scholarships shall be equal to or more than 75 percent of annual tuition. The amount of the graduate fellowship shall be equal to or more than 30 percent of annual tuition. The recipients will be deserving women pursuing degrees in engineering, law or business. The undergraduate recipient will have an overall grade-point average of 2.5 or better, will have completed at least 32 credits and will have demonstrated financial need. The graduate recipient will have been accepted within one of The University of Akron's graduate programs in engineering, law or business and will have achieved an undergraduate grade-point average of 2.5 or better with demonstrated financial need.
The John Wesley Doubledee Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to one student who displays significant potential as a future business leader through academic success, civic involvement and community efforts. The recipient will be a deserving student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in business within the following areas: E-Business, Entrepreneurship, International Business or Information Technologies.
To be considered for this scholarship, both undergraduate and graduate students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Graduate students must have been accepted within one of The University of Akron’s graduate programs in the College of Business Administration. Preference will be given to students who are Summit County residents. Awards are renewable to students maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
To apply for this scholarship, students must submit a letter of application and resume to The Office of Student Financial Aid. The letter should indicate how the candidate qualifies for the scholarship (e.g. current GPA, current employment and extracurricular activities). The Office of Student Financial Aid will have the first opportunity to determine the recipients, in consultation with Deanna Doubledee. If there are no eligible College of Business Administration candidates, The Office of Student Financial Aid will determine the scholarship recipients in consultation with Deanna Doubledee.
The Edith Mae Eckler Memorial Awards
Provided through the provision of funds from the Edith Mae Eckler Trust, named in memory of the wife of the late John R. Eckler, first president of the First Central Trust Company (now known as the First National Bank of Ohio), awards for scholarship are made to students majoring in finance and accounting.
The Ernst & Young Accounting Achievement Scholarships
Two annual awards are presented to outstanding junior accounting students based on scholarship and leadership.
Ernst & Young Endowed Accounting Leadership Scholarship
Ernst & Young LLP created the Ernst & Young Endowed Accounting Leadership Scholarship to benefit students enrolled in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron College of Business Administration. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist deserving students pursuing a degree in accounting.
Ernst & Young scholars should:
- Be enrolled in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron;
- Demonstrate financial need or hardship;
- Maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.25 in accounting classes;
- Demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular activities including sports, clubs, charitable organizations, or outside employment; and
- Exhibit leadership abilities.
The Ernst & Young Alumni Scholarship
The Ernest & Young Scholarships were established by alumni of The University of Akron who are employed by Ernst & Young. Annual gifts are used to provide scholarship assistance for exceptional undergraduate students majoring in accounting. Recipients are determined by a faculty committee with a preference for students with high academic achievement and a strong interest in student activities.
The Ernst & Young Minority Business Scholarship
Established in 1989 by Ernst & Young, this minority scholarship is awarded to an outstanding sophomore student who has declared a major in the College of Business Administration. The student should also be committed to a career in American business. The recipient is selected by a faculty committee. To be eligible, students must have completed 45 semester credits and possess a minimum of a 2.50 cumulative grade-point average.
The Evans Foundation Scholarships
The Evans Foundation Scholarships are open to financially needy, full-time students enrolled at The University of Akron who have demonstrated high scholastic ability, good citizenship, promise, and leadership abilities. All qualifications being equal, preference is given to those enrolled in the College of Business Administration.
The Department of Finance Advisory Board Endowment Fund
The Department of Finance Advisory Board Endowment (“Fund”) was created as a means for advisory board members and friends of the Department of Finance to provide support to students pursuing a degree in Finance and to department faculty members to further classroom instruction and support research. The intent of the endowment is to serve as a secondary funding mechanism for such programs, with the primary funding provided by annual membership fees of the Advisory Board members.
The Flexsys America L. P. Global Business Scholarship Fund
The Flexsys America L. P. Global Business Scholarship was established in 1998. Flexsys, the largest worldwide producer of chemicals for the rubber industry, with regional headquarters for the Americas located in Northeast Ohio, demonstrates its strong commitment to academic excellence. This scholarship provides support to one undergraduate student majoring in global business in the College of Business Administration. The specific purpose of this scholarship is to attract highly qualified students to the Institute for Global Business. Student selection is made by the Institute for Global Business and approved by the Flexsys management team, based on scholastic achievement, superior character, and leadership. The scholarship student participates in a summer internship at Flexsys with the approval of Flexsys.
The Karen M. Frey Scholarship Fund
The Karen M. Frey Scholarship Fund was established in 1992 by a University of Akron alumnus. The scholarship benefits a full-time student with a declared major in the College of Business Administration and a 3.0 or above grade point average. The scholarship is renewable while the student is in good academic standing and meets the described qualifications. First preference will be given to a graduate of a parochial high school in Summit County.
The Anita and Thomas Gedelian Endowed Scholarship
Thomas and Anita Gedelian established this scholarship in 2006 to assist students pursuing degrees in Accounting and Finance in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. As alumni and benefactors of the College of Business Administration, Mr. and Mrs. Gedelian are active supporters of their alma mater. Mr. Gedelian has served the College as a member of the Institute for Global Business Advisory Board and through his current membership on the College’s Advancement Council. He also serves as a director of The University of Akron Foundation. He received a BA in accounting in 1977 and is a shareholder in the firm of Brockman, Coats, Gedelian & Company. In 1991, he was awarded the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Award, which recognizes outstanding business alumni at The University of Akron. Mrs. Gedelian returned to school after raising three children and earned a BA in Finance in 2005. She represented the College of Business Administration as the student responder at her commencement ceremony. Mrs. Gedelian is with the Private Client Services Group of FirstMerit Bank.
Establishing a scholarship to assist students in their academic pursuits in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration is another example of the Gedelians’ belief in the importance of higher education. In selecting recipients of the Gedelian Endowed Scholarship, preference will be given to a junior or senior majoring in Accounting or Finance. Applicants must maintain a 3.3 grade point average and demonstrate employment that assists in contributing to college expenses, as well as participation in civic or community activities or organizations. Students should apply in writing to the College of Business Administration scholarship committee to express their interest in The Anita and Thomas Gedelian Endowed Scholarship to indicate their need for financial assistance. Selection will be made by the dean of the College of Business Administration with input from the department chairs of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy and the Department of Finance.
The Samir and Salma Gibara International
Business Fellowships
Samir Gibara was born in Cairo, Egypt and earned a BS in Business from Cairo University in 1960 and an MBA in International Business and Finance from Harvard University in 1964. He also attended the Kellogg Graduate School of Management’s Executive Program at Northwestern University. His career with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company spanned over thirty years, serving as president of Goodyear Canada in 1989 and Goodyear Europe one year later. Mr. Gibara came to Akron in the newly-created position of vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development and also as acting vice president of Finance. In May 1994, he was named executive vice president of North American Tire and in January 1996, was named president and CEO. He retired as chairman of Goodyear in June, 2003. He and his wife, Salma, maintain a residence in Akron.
As a true “internationalist” and advocate for the Institute for Global Business in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration, Mr. Gibara desires to see the fellowships benefit students with a demonstrated history of high academic performance who are pursuing degrees in International Business. The awards are to be made available annually to one (1) international student from outside the United States and one (1) domestic student from within the United States. The awards are renewable based on academic performance with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above required for consideration. Selection of recipients will be determined by the dean of the College of Business Administration with input from the director of the Institute for Global Business.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Accounting Scholarships
This scholarship fund was established by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for the purpose of assisting junior accounting majors recommended by the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy faculty. The recipients must be U.S. citizens who desire to enter business or industry upon graduation and who require financial assistance.
The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program
The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program, established in 1998, enhances the continuing spirit of partnership between The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and The University of Akron. Numerous University graduates have held key positions at Goodyear, while Goodyear executives share their expertise in University classes and advisory groups. Preparing competent and responsible future leaders in the field of international business is the central mission of The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program.
The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program makes available four full-academic undergraduate scholarships to the sons and daughters of full-time Goodyear associates, subsidiaries, and retirees worldwide. The annual competition for these awards, administered by Goodyear’s four business units, identifies and honors four academically talented students seeking degrees in international business. Four scholarships are awarded annually from each of Goodyear’s four regions: Asian Region, European Region, North American Region, and Latin American Region and honors the regional global contributions of Goodyear’s four recent chairmen, Stanley C. Gault, Tom H. Barrett, Robert E. Mercer, and Charles J. Pilliod, Jr., respectively.
The Charles J. Pilliod, Jr. Goodyear Latin American Region Scholarship
The Charles J. Pilliod, Jr. Goodyear Latin American Region Scholarship is a tribute to hard work, success and education. Mr. Pilliod devoted 17 years of his Goodyear career working in Latin America and served as U.S. ambassador to Mexico after his retirement. In 1971 he became president of Goodyear International and executive vice president and a member of the Board of Directors. One year later, he was elected president and chief operating officer and in 1974, Mr. Pilliod was elected to positions of chairman and chief executive officer.
The Robert E. Mercer Goodyear North American Region Scholarship
The Robert E. Mercer Goodyear North American Region Scholarship pays tribute to the fundamental tie between community involvement and American enterprise. Much of Mr. Mercer’s 42 years with Goodyear was devoted to the growth and expansion of Goodyear’s North American operations, including its Kelly-Springfield subsidiary and its engineering products division. In 1978, Mr. Mercer became Goodyear’s president; by 1980, its chief operating officer; and by 1983, chairman.
The Stanley C. Gault Goodyear Asian Region Scholarship
The Stanley C. Gault Goodyear Asian Region Scholarship pays tribute to the greatness of character that education cultivates and protects. Stanley C. Gault helped The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company grow into one of the nation’s greatest global companies, and under his leadership, Goodyear was the first major global tire company to enter China, where it acquired both a tire plant and an automotive hose plant.
The Tom H. Barrett Goodyear European Region Scholarship
The Tom H. Barrett Goodyear European Region Scholarship pays tribute to the importance of educating leaders for the global business environment. During his 38 years with Goodyear, Mr. Barrett served in Europe at the company’s Luxembourg complex, which became the company’s largest investment beyond North America. In 1982, he was named Goodyear’s president and chief operating officer, and seven years later, became chairman, president and chief executive officer.
The Dennis Gordon Endowed Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1981 by colleagues and friends of Dennis Gordon in honor of his retirement after a distinguished career spanning 35 years as professor of accounting and 27 years as head of the School of Accountancy. Earnings from the endowed principal are used to provide three scholarship awards to outstanding juniors majoring in accounting. Selection of the recipients is determined by merit and/or need by the Dennis Gordon Scholarship Fund Steering Committee.
The Jacob and Dora V. Gordon Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1975 by Jacob Gordon, certified public accountant. A tuition award is to be presented to an outstanding full-time junior student(s) entering their senior year majoring in accounting. Recipients are to be selected for the award by the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy Chair and faculty. Awardees are chosen on the basis of academic achievement and participation in campus activities.
The Edwin J. Gottfried Endowed Margin of Excellence Fund in the College of Business Administration
The Edwin J. Gottfried Endowed Margin of Excellence Fund in the College of Business Administration was established in 1998 by Edwin J. Gottfried. Mr. Gottfried graduated from The University of Akron in 1958 with a B.S.B.A. in management. The fund provides incentives for outstanding faculty members, teaching awards, and students clubs.
The David M. Grubb Endowed Scholarship
David M. Grubb earned two degrees from The University of Akron College of Business Administration, a BSIM in 1977 and an MBA in 1979. Upon graduating from the University, Mr. Grubb went to work for the consulting division of Arthur Andersen, which later became Accenture. Mr. Grubb ascended through the ranks to achieve partner status, and at the time this scholarship was created, he had been with the company for 23 years.
Mr. Grubb’s days at The University of Akron prepared him well for the challenges of business. Practical experiences in the classroom and dedicated professors gave him the foundation necessary to succeed in a highly demanding and competitive field.
It is Mr. Grubb’s wish that his scholarship benefit undergraduate or graduate students in the Management program with a demonstrated history of high academic achievement. Students are eligible to renew the scholarship as long as they are enrolled at The University of Akron and continue to maintain the same standards of academic achievement that initially qualified them for the scholarship.
The Louis F. and Dorothy C. Hampel Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship fund was established by Dr. Robert L. Hampel in memory of his parents' dedication to the College. Author of a business statistics textbook and a Vice President of United Airlines, Louis F. Hampel began (1933-1942) and finished (1968-1974) his career on the faculty of the College of Business Administration, where Dorothy C. Hampel took courses, including her future husband's finance class ("tough, but I got an 'A,'" she'd boast).
The Hampel Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Finance, enrolled full-time in the College of Business Administration, and enrolled in The University of Akron Honors Program. The scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient remains in good standing with the Honors Program.
The Velma Hesselbart Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1982 by Robert Mitten of Hesselbart & Mitten Advertising to honor the agency’s cofounder, the late Vee Hesselbart. Awards covering tuition, fees, and books are made annually to one junior, one senior, and one graduate woman majoring in marketing. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and need. A recipient may apply for annual renewal of the scholarship.
The Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship
Joseph C. Hete established the Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship to provide opportunity and encouragement for students seeking to achieve life goals through higher education.
Like his six siblings, Mr. Hete is a graduate of The University of Akron. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1976. Today, Mr. Hete is President and CEO of ABX Air, Inc., a cargo airline with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft. Mr. Hete has been with ABX Air, Inc. since its inception in 1980. He was named President and COO of the company in 2000 and to his present position as President and CEO in 2003. He has been a director of the company since 1988. Mr. Hete is married and the father of four children.
The purpose of the Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship is to provide scholarship support in the form of tuition assistance, books and/or fees, for students in The University of Akron’s College of Business. Applicants for the Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship are expected to be employed on a part or full-time basis and have a demonstrated financial need. Applicants must submit an essay that visions their future careers. The Joseph C. Hete & Family Scholarship will be awarded by The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration, working in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Donald S. Hills Endowed Scholarship Fund in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy
The Donald S. Hills Endowed Scholarship Fund in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy was established in 1996 by Mr. Hills. Donald S. Hills is a 1947 graduate of the College of Business Administration with a degree in accounting. The Scholarship(s) will be used to recruit income freshmen desiring to major in accounting. Mr. Hills served as Vice President of Sara Lee Products and Assistant Secretary of Sara Lee Corporation and Vice President of Lawson Company.
The Haven J. Hood Scholarship in Business
The Haven J. Hood Scholarship in Business, established in 2004, was created to financially support students in the College of Business Administration at the University of Akron. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient will have the following qualifications: financial need, GPA of 3.2 or higher, preference will be given to students raised by a single mother.
Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Horn Endowed Scholarship in Accounting
The Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Horn Endowed Scholarship in Accounting was established in 1996 in honor of Dr. Horn by his wife, Lenore Peterman Horn. The Scholarship will be awarded to a third-year student with an overall GPA of 3.0 to be used toward fourth-year tuition. Dr. and Mrs. Horn both graduated from East High School in 1929. Dr. Frederick E. Horn graduated from The University of Akron in 1933. Mrs. Horn attended evening classes at The University of Akron while at the same time being the private secretary to the Superintendent of the Akron Public School system. Dr. Horn received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, where he had a distinguished career as a Graduate School of Business Professor, and headed the Graduate School of Business office for several years. Dr. Horn was a CPA and Partner in the Arthur accounting firm in New York City where he was their International Personnel Director. And it was in this capacity that Dr. Horn and his wife traveled to over 150 countries -- he teaching accounting to foreign employees of the firm and she doing his secretarial work. Both Dr. and Mrs. Horn were indeed grateful to the University for their excellent educational background and she is pleased to establish this endowed fund.
The Human Spirit Scholarship
The Human Spirit Scholarship, established in 2004, was created to assist students in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron to partially fund their purchases of required textbooks. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available.
Recipients must complete an application form and submit a 2,000 word essay. Essay requirements will be given to applicants through the Department of Management. All College of Business students are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students majoring in Management.
The Center for Information Technology and E-Business (CITE) Scholarship
The Center for Information Technology and E-Business (CITE) Scholarship was established to recruit outstanding students to the college’s information systems and e-business programs and to recognize current information systems and e-business majors who demonstrate academic excellence. It is available to students at any level (undergraduate or graduate) and is renewable.
To be eligible for the scholarship, an incoming freshman must have a high school GPA of at least 3.0 and an ACT score of at least 21 or SAT score of at least 880, and be an information systems or e-business major. A current undergraduate or graduate student must be enrolled on a full-time basis, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be an information systems or e-business major. To remain eligible for this scholarship, the recipient must continue to major in information systems or e-business in the CBA, maintain a grade point average of at least 3.2, and remain a full-time student.
The CBA Scholarship Committee will select recipients. Freshmen recipients will be selected from the list of incoming freshmen as of February 1. Current students should submit a letter of application to the Committee Chair, CBA Scholarship Committee, The letter should contain the following: a brief explanation of the student’s circumstances of financial need; evidence of academic excellence; and a description of the student’s career goals in the fields of accounting information systems, management information systems or e-business.
The Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. Scholarship
The Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. Scholarship, established in 2004, was created to financially support students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient will have the following qualifications: GPA of 3.0 or higher and financial need.
The Jack W. Johnson Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2003 by loving family and friends as a lasting tribute to Jack W. Johnson, Class of 1960. An Akron native, Jack graduated with a B.S. from the University of Akron in Industrial Management. He completed the Program for Executives at Carnegie Mellon University in 1977, and the Program for Senior Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982. Well-respected in the business community, Jack was with the BFGoodrich Co. from 1960 to 1983 where he held a series of positions including the following: Personnel Manager at the plant level; Division Manager of Industrial Relations (Tire Division); Corporate Manager of Union Relations; Staff Vice President for Labor Relations; and Vice President of Administration for the Engineered Product Group. From 1983 to 1986, he was Senior Vice President, Human Resources, at Eastern Airlines. From 1987 to 1989, he served as Deputy Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in Washington, D.C. He was employed by the LTV Corporation, from 1989 to 1992, first as Director of Labor Relations and Personnel, and then as Vice President, Human Resources, LTV Aerospace and Defense Co. Since November of 1992 until his death September 14, 2003, Jack was a Labor-Management Relations Consultant with Bill Usery Associates, Inc. in Washington, D.C. Mr. Usery is a Former Secretary of Labor and held Jack in the highest regard.
The Jack W. Johnson Memorial Scholarship will provide academic undergraduate scholarship(s) to a deserving College of Business Administration student selected by the Dean of the College of Business Administration in cooperation with the Office of Financial Aid. The students must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average, and must exhibit scholarship and leadership within the College of Business Administration. The University of Akron Foundation Board of Trustees have the power to change the description of the scholarship if, in the future, it is determined the scholarship is not consistent with the mission of the College of Business Administration.
The Russell R. and Vivienne S. Johnstone Scholarship
Vivienne Skadsdamen Johnstone, a native of Sharon, North Dakota and a graduate of the University of North Dakota, established The Russell R. and Vivienne S. Johnstone Scholarship in memory of her husband, Russell, and as a gift to the community where she and her husband lived, worked, volunteered, raised their two children, and enjoyed their two grandchildren and great grandchild.
College sweethearts, Vivienne and Russell Johnstone met at a weekly dance hosted by Vivienne’s sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Russ, a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, was a law student and Vivienne was a freshman. For Russ, it was love at first sight, but because he felt so strongly about the importance of education, marriage was postponed until after Vivienne’s graduation. For the next nine years, Vivienne and Russ moved around the United States (Illinois, Texas and Ohio) as Russ’s career in the insurance industry took off. During this time period, World War II intervened. Russ served his country, both at home and abroad, in the Army as a First Sergeant, and Vivienne worked to coordinate grain shipments in four-states for the Army. In 1952, Russ accepted a position with Roadway Express and moved his family to Akron, Ohio. The Johnstones quickly became active members of the Akron community. Vivienne volunteered with the PTA at her children’s schools, and Russ, who retired from Roadway Express in 1976 as the company’s Vice President and Corporate Secretary, held positions of leadership within the community with organizations like the Ohio Bar Association, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries, the Central Hospital Bureau, and the Ohio Trucking Association who inducted him into the Ohio Trucking Association’s Hall of Fame in the 1970’s. Both were also intimately involved at their church, Westminster Presbyterian Church.
The purpose of The Russell R. and Vivienne S. Johnstone Scholarship is to provide scholarship support to one or more students in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. In awarding the scholarship, consideration shall be given to students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and financial need.
The Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series
Established in 2004, The Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series is designed for students in the College of Business Administration to hear firsthand from innovative business professionals about the practical applications of the principles that have made them successful, and will serve as a compliment to the academic offerings of the College.
Donald L. Kaufman is a popular guest lecturer in the College of Business Administration and also lectures to students in local high schools, particularly to economically disadvantaged students, in an attempt to instill in them the belief that they, too, can be successful in business if they apply themselves. Kaufman retired from Alside, Inc., after 45 years, ultimately serving as the company’s president and chief executive officer.
Guest speakers in the Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series will be approved by Mr. Kaufman with input from the College’s dean, faculty and a student representative. Mr. Kaufman may also select personal advisors to serve on the selection committee as he sees necessary.
The Donald L. Kaufman Essay Competition to Accentuate Ethical Business Practices
Donald L. Kaufman was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and moved to Akron at a young age. He attended Ohio State University where he earned a BA in 1953 and JD in 1955. Upon graduating from law school, he served in the United States Air Force as a JAG. Following his service to his country, Mr. Kaufman returned to the Akron area and joined Alside, Inc., a company founded by his brothers that together they grew into the recognized leader in the aluminum and vinyl siding industry.
Mr. Kaufman began his career with Alside, Inc. as General Counsel for the company and rose to the rank of President in 1974 and Chief Executive Officer in 1982, a title he held until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure, he was responsible for over 3,000 employees and $500 million in sales. Above all, Mr. Kaufman prides himself on the ethical manner through which he balanced the delicate relationships between his associates, customers, and the company’s bottom line. It is his belief that any comprehensive business education includes timely and relevant curricular issues focusing on ethics in business. This resulted in the establishment of the Donald L. Kaufman Essay Competition to Accentuate Ethical Business Practices in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. Mr. Kaufman also established the Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series in the College of Business Administration as a way to supplement the academic experiences of students with real world expertise from business practitioners.
The Kaufman Essay Competition is intended to benefit undergraduate students in the College of Business Administration who demonstrate a propensity toward successful careers in business that will be guided by ethical, moral and overall sound business judgment. To determine a worthy recipient, on an annual basis, the College of Business Administration will make students aware of the scholarship which will involve a case study and be the basis for the essay. Interested students will apply in writing to receive a copy of the case study and the rules governing the competition. Entries will be judged annually by representatives appointed by Mr. Kaufman and faculty members the College of Business Administration. The winner of the competition will receive a $2,000 tuition credit.
The O. R. Keister Endowment Program
To honor his dedication, the College of Business Administration established the Dr. O. R. Keister Endowment Program to underwrite student scholarships, sponsor program enhancement and support faculty awards. Support from alumni, former students, friends and corporations enabled the College of Business Administration to offer awards from the Dr. O. R. Keister Endowment starting in 1995.
The Thomas J. Kelty Memorial APICS Scholarship Award
This award was established in 1984 by Akron Area Chapter of The American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), for the purpose of annually recognizing an outstanding student majoring in Industrial Management. In 1996, the award was renamed the Thomas J. Kelty Memorial APICS Scholarship Award in memory of Thomas J. Kelty, a longtime member and president of Akron Area APICS Chapter, who was a strong advocate for professional education and an active supporter of the Student APICS Chapter at The University of Akron. Selection of the recipient is to be determined by the faculty of the Department of Management, College of Business Administration.
The Rose Marie Kohn-Diehl Memorial Scholarship in Accounting
The Rose Marie Kohn-Diehl Memorial Scholarship in Accounting was established in October, 2006 by her two sons, W. Gary Diehl and James S. Diehl. Mrs. Kohn-Diehl worked in the family distributing business, The Kohn Beverage Company, The W. G. Diehl Distributing Company and Jameson Cross Inc. as an accountant. She raised her family to value education – especially accounting – and persevere through a combination of hard work and commitment to her community.
The Rose Marie Kohn-Diehl Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to deserving students in the College of Business Administration who are majoring in accounting. The students will be nominated by the Department of Accounting and must have demonstrated financial need. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. The scholarship is renewable, provided that these requirements continue to be met.
Vincent P. Kopy Scholarship Fund
The Vincent P. Kopy Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by former students of Vincent P. Kopy in sincere appreciation for the support and guidance that he gave them while at The University of Akron. In addition to traditional instruction in the area of accounting, Mr. Kopy extended his lessons beyond the classroom to encourage student participation in college activities, student associations and professional internships. Vincent P. Kopy took a personal interest in the lives of his students and encouraged them to reach their full potential. His former students wish to provide this scholarship as a tribute to the leadership and life skills he gave them. The Vincent P. Kopy Scholarship recipient(s) will be at the junior or senior grade level enrolled in the College of Business Administration pursuing a degree in accounting. First consideration will go to students who demonstrate strong interest and participation in student organizations, particularly Beta Alpha Psi, Accounting Association and Toastmasters. The Kopy Scholar(s) should maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Grade point average is of secondary importance to participation in student organizations.
The KPMG Peat Marwick Alumni Scholarships
Scholarship awards are presented annually to outstanding junior accounting majors who have been employed and who have been active in campus activities. Support for this scholarship fund is provided by University alumni employed by KPMG Peat Marwick.
The KPMG Peat Marwick Endowment Fund
This fund was established in 1985 with gifts from alumni employed by KPMG Peat Marwick and matching provisions from the KPMG Peat Marwick Foundation. The fund provides annual scholarships to outstanding junior accounting majors.
The KPMG Peat Marwick Faculty Fellowship
The KPMG Peat Marwick Faculty Fellowship is to be awarded annually to a senior faculty member for three-year, non-renewable terms. The Fellowship is based on superior teaching, commitment to scholarship and extensive involvement as a leader in professional and community activities. A Fellow must be a full-time, tenured faculty member of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy for at least five years with a total professional service at all universities of at least 10 years and holds the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The funds will be used at the discretion of the Fellow to support his/her teaching, research, and service activities. The selection committee will be composed of the Head of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, the Dean of the College of Business Administration, and the Managing Partner of the Akron office of KPMG Peat Marwick.
The Dr. Warren W. Leigh Fund
This endowment fund was established by Julia R. Leigh in loving memory of her late husband, Dean Emeritus Dr. Warren W. Leigh, founder of the College of Business Administration, The University of Akron. All endowed earnings are designated to advance the academic quality of the College by bringing to campus distinguished lecturers, conducting seminars, or carrying through other faculty improvements. The determination of the annual programs and the expenditure amounts for them are to be left to the discretion of the College of Business Administration's Dean and the Department Heads of that College. Contributions to the Leigh Fund are welcomed.
The Macro-Davis Joint Degree Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Macro-Davis Joint Degree Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by University of Akron alumni, Judith A. Macro and Richmond L. Davis. Ms. Macro graduated from the School of Law in 1992 and Mr. Davis graduated from the College of Business Administration in 1975.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist deserving students who are receiving a joint degree at the College of Business Administration and the School of Law. The Macro-Davis Joint Degree Endowed Scholarship Fund is an avenue for Mr. and Mrs. Davis to assist others while honoring those who have helped them on their journey. It is established in recognition of the blessings the Lord has provided through their academic accomplishments.
Their first preference for scholarship selection is, on a rotating basis, to have the Director of Graduate Programs at the College of Business Administration, determine the recipients in consultation with Judith Macro and Richmond Davis. The next year, the associate dean of the School of Law, in consultation with Judith Macro and Richmond Davis, will select the recipients. If Judith Macro and Richmond Davis are not available to participate in the selection process, the deans will determine the recipients.
The second preference for selection will be, on a rotating basis, a female student(s) in the School of Law working part-time, with a female student(s) in the College of Business Administration working part-time chosen the next year. All applicants will be required to demonstrate financial need, be of sound character, and demonstrate community involvement. Applicants should submit applications and fully completed resumes or vitas electronically.
The Daniel Joseph Maimone Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Daniel Joseph Maimone Scholarship Fund was established in 1978 by family and friends in loving tribute to the memory of Daniel Joseph Maimone, whose courage and determination in contending with leukemia was an inspiration to all who knew him. This endowed fund provides three scholarship awards for either accounting students or incoming freshmen majoring in accounting. Selection of recipients is based on character, leadership attributes, academic interest and need.
The Management Faculty Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in 1996 by the Management Department in the College of Business Administration. The number of awards and amount of awards are to be determined based on the amount available in the account as of January, 1997, with the goal of Fall, 1997 as the first award period. Recipients of this scholarship must have declared Management as their major with a GPA of 3.0 or better and have completed at least one course in Management beyond the core courses.
The Felix N. Mansager Free Enterprise Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Felix N. Mansager for his abiding and dedicated support of the Students In Free Enterprise organization at the College of Business. The scholarship will be awarded annually to five students who are active participants in the S.I.F.E. organization and who successfully complete the Free Enterprise course offered each semester at the College of Business. The recipients will be selected by the College of Business.
The James P. McCausland Endowment
This endowment was established in 1997 through a gift from Mr. James P. McCausland, a friend of The University of Akron. A successful manager of PaineWebber brokerage house, Mr. McCausland has designated his support be used to assist The College of Business Administration to help its students launch their careers in business. The endowment is to be used at the discretion of the Dean of the College to meet needs that will advance the purpose and esteem of the College.
The Alberta and E.C. McCormick, Jr. Educational Fund for Business Administration
Established at the request of Mr. and Mrs. McCormick’s daughter, Suzanne Rickards, this scholarship will benefit students in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration, specifically those pursuing coursework in the William T. and Rita Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.
E.C. McCormick was a 1923 graduate of The University of Akron. As a student, Mr. McCormick was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and also participated in football and baseball. A true entrepreneur, Mr. McCormick founded the McCormick Insurance Agency after graduation and also had interests in the trucking industry and the cattle business.
Mr. McCormick remained loyal to his alma mater as a charter member of The University of Akron Foundation, ultimately serving as its director and assisting President Emeritus Norman P. Auburn in some of the University’s earliest organized fundraising efforts, especially the initial campaign for E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Mr. McCormick was a generous and dedicated benefactor of The University of Akron until his death in 1985.
First preference for the scholarship will be given to children of employees of the McCormick Insurance Agency pursuing coursework in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. Should no qualified candidates surface under this criteria, and in the same spirit of entrepreneurship that drove Mr. McCormick in his career, second preference will be given to students taking coursework in the William T. and Rita Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.
The Professor Stewart and Grace McKinnon Scholarship and Loan Fund
As a former professor in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron, Dr. Stewart McKinnon knew the value of a quality education. After leaving the College of Business Administration, Dr. McKinnon and his wife, Grace, established a trust account at First National Bank that would one day provide great benefits to generations of students at The University of Akron. Then in 1976, in accordance with the terms of the bequest, The Professor Stewart and Grace McKinnon Scholarship and Loan Fund was established. At the direction of the Dean of the College of Business Administration, this fund is to benefit qualified students in accordance with Dr. McKinnon’s wishes. This fund may be used annually at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Business Administration to award scholarships and provide loans to students in the College of Business Administration.
The Robert and Janet McMinn Scholarship
Robert McMinn (’72) and his wife Janet established this scholarship in 2004 to assist students pursuing degrees in Accounting in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. An active alumni volunteer and benefactor of the College of Business Administration, Mr. McMinn is past chairman of the College’s Advancement Council and has been a member of the Council since 1991. He has also served as the chairman of the College of Business Administration Alumni Board, and as a member of the University’s National Alumni Board. He was instrumental in the establishment of the College of Business Administration Alumni Scholarship (now the Frank L. Simonetti Scholarship) and has been a frequent guest lecturer in the Professor for a Day program. As a partner in the accounting firm of Ciulla, Smith & Dale, Mr. McMinn is a tremendous advocate for University of Akron accounting students, offerering numerous students valuable practical experience through internships with the firm.
Establishing a scholarship to assist students in their academic pursuits in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration is another example of the McMinn’s commitment to student success. In selecting scholarship recipients, first preference will be given to junior or senior accounting majors who are graduates of the following high schools: Nordonia High School in Macedonia, OH (Mr. McMinn’s high school alma mater), Lorain County Joint Vocational School in Oberlin, OH (Mrs. McMinn’s longtime employer) and students from North Ridgeville High School in North Ridgeville, OH (Mrs. McMinn’s high school alma mater and the community where the McMinn’s reside). Should no applicants who meet this requirement apply, preference will then go to junior or senior accounting majors with no regard to their high school alma mater. Selection will be made by the chair of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, with input from Mr. and Mrs. McMinn during their lifetimes.

The Meaden & Moore Ltd. Scholarship
The Meaden and Moore Scholarship, established in 2004, was created to financially support students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient will have the following qualifications: a GPA of 3.0 or higher and Financial need.
The James H. (‘52) and Eva Miller Scholarship Fund
The James H. (‘52) and Eva Miller Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by loyal alumnus Jim Miller and his wife, Eva. The fund recognizes the Millers’ deep belief in the value of higher education and their love of The University of Akron. The James H. and Eva Miller Scholarship is awarded to students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy with a 3.50 or above grade point average. Preference is given to students from the Akron area who are pursing a career in managerial accounting. Selection is made by the faculty scholarship committee of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.
The Robert and Hellen Mitten Scholarship Fund for Marketing Students
This endowed fund was established in 1987 by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitten. The fund recognizes a marketing student(s) in the College of Business Administration who exemplifies outstanding merit and has financial need. Endowment income is to be made available for award upon the selection of the University Scholarship Committee.
The Dorothy A. Mizer Endowed Scholarship
The Dorothy A. Mizer Endowed Scholarship was established in 2001 by an anonymous donor interested in supporting management students while honoring and remembering a member of the donor’s family.
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist deserving students in the Management Department. Proceeds from this fund shall be given to deserving students to help offset the cost of textbooks and other materials required throughout the academic year. Recipients of this award must have declared management as their major. This award will be administered by the Management Scholarship Committee.
The Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship Fund
The Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 by Huber L. Mollenkopf in loving memory of his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Mollenkopf are members of Hilltoppers/Buchtelles and are benefactors of the University. This endowment was created by a gift to The University of Akron Foundation to benefit junior or senior level students from the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. Special consideration is given to students who have demonstrated financial need. Selection of award recipients is made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in cooperation with the dean of the College of Business Administration.
The Moore Stephens Apple Scholarship
The Moore Stephens Apple Scholarship was established to recognize Jay Heinick, who founded the firm in 1943. Heinick graduated from The University of Akron in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The recipient of this scholarship will have a grade point average of 3.25 or higher and display high ethics and strong leadership skills in student organizations. The student selected will have an opportunity to participate in the Moore Stephens Apple internship program during the spring semester. Moore Stephens Apple and the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy will select the recipient of this award.
The Fern Murphy-Victor Endowed Scholarship
The Fern Murphy-Victor Endowed Scholarship was established by the family of Mrs. Murphy-Victor in her memory. Mrs. Victor was a lifetime resident of Akron, graduated from Kenmore High School, and attended The University of Akron. Fern was a member of First Grace United Church of Christ, Akron Woman’s City Club, National Secretaries Association, and the Y.W.C.A Board. She was the past president of the Akron Bar Auxiliary.
The Fern Murphy-Victor Scholarship recipient will be of Junior or Senior status, enrolled in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron, and will be chosen by the College of Business Administration Dean’s Office, with influence from Mrs. Myrna Rea, daughter of Mrs. Murphy-Victor. The recipient will have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and provide a letter of recommendation that exhibits the recipient’s high moral character. Preference will be given to female applicants.
The R. C. and Katharine Musson Endowment Fund in the College of Business Administration
This fund was established on an endowed basis in 1985 through a grant by the R. C. and Katharine Musson Charitable Foundation. Earnings are used to provide as many full tuition scholarships as possible for deserving students enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Selection of recipients is determined by the University Scholarship Committee.
The Isidore C. and Penny W. Myers Endowment Fund
The Isidore C. and Penny W. Myers Scholarship Fund was established on September 16, 1996 by Isidore C. Myers. In February 2006, Mr. Myers amended the name and purpose of the Fund.
Mr. Myers is a 1939 graduate of The University of Akron. Upon graduation, he joined his brothers, Meyer and Louis, as a partner in Myers Tire Supply, which later became Myers Industries. In 1971, Mr. Myers left the company and started ICM-JAE Properties, Inc., formerly known as Isidore C. Myers Properties, Inc., a business to acquire, develop, and manage a private portfolio of industrial and commercial real estate in Orange County, California. Mr. Myers is a recipient of the Dr. Frank Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni Award and an honorary member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
In creating the Isidore C. and Penny W. Myers Scholarship Fund, Mr. Myers stated. “A person must strive to leave this world a better place than when he or she entered it. The education I attained at The University of Akron was crucial to the success I achieved in my business career and in my life in general. It is time to repay The University of Akron, my mentors and benefactors. Penny and I are delighted to help others become college educated so they too can be the best they can be.”
The purpose of the Isidore C. and Penny W. Myers Endowment Fund is to provide annual scholarship assistance for employees of Myers Industries, Inc. or their children. In awarding the scholarship, first preference shall be given to individuals for the continuation of studies in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. Income from the Fund may also be used to pay for equipment and/or for research requirements in the College of Business Administration. The President of The University of Akron or his nominee shall approve all expenditures.

The Henry “Hank” Nettling Endowed Scholarship in Accounting
The Henry “Hank” Nettling Endowed Scholarship in Accounting was created in 2002 through contributions from friends and relatives in honor of Henry “Hank” Nettling, vice president emeritus for Business and Finance upon his retirement after 38 years of dedicated service to The University of Akron; and upon being conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of distinguished leadership and service to the University through the promotion of sound business and financial policies and practices. Hank is an alumnus of the University receiving his BSBA in Accounting in 1959.
The scholarship is awarded by the Accounting Department in the College of Business Administration, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid, to a full-time, junior accounting student maintaining a 3.0 to 3.5 GPA. The recipient will receive half of the award in the fall term and the remaining half in the spring term. The student must have financial need, yet not be eligible for grant assistance from state or federal need-based programs. The scholarship can be awarded through the recipient’s senior year if applicable. Memorial contributions are welcome.
The Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Society for Information Management Scholarship Fund
The Society for Information Management (SIM) is an international professional organization of senior information technology managers. SIM’s activities are intended to strengthen professional communications among its members who are responsible for directing the use of information technology in public and private organizations.
Selected recipients must be current students in good standing at The University of Akron in an MIS or IT major, must have at least a 3.0 grade point average in their major, must have completed at least one semester of coursework and have at least two semesters of coursework remaining. The College of Business Administration and the College of Arts and Science at The University of Akron will rotate recipients annually.
The Northeast Ohio Rubber Group Scholarship in Business Administration
The Northeast Ohio Rubber Group Scholarship in Business Administration was established in 1998 by the Northeast Ohio Rubber Group, for students majoring or minoring in sales. Selection of recipients is to be based on merit, character, leadership attributes, academic interest, and need.
Northeast Ohio WERCouncil Scholarship
The Northeast Ohio WERCouncil, an affiliate of the Warehousing Education and Research Council, established the WERC Scholarship in 2004 to support Supply Chain/Operations Management students in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The scholarship will be awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient will have the following qualifications: GPA of 3.0 or higher and a declared major or minor in supply chain/operations management
The Karl O. Nygaard Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Karl O. Nygaard. The award was initiated by his family and friends in honor of all that he accomplished throughout his lifetime. Nygaard joined The BFGoodrich Company in 1954 as economist and corporate director of business research after four years with the Department of Commerce. He was named vice president/BFGoodrich brand replacement sales in 1971. In 1972 he was named vice president/marketing for the tire division of BFGoodrich. At the time of his death in 1975, he was senior vice president of The BFGoodrich Company with the overall responsibility for manufacturing and technical activities of the tire company. This annual scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Department of Marketing. The recipient shall have a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above and have significant financial need. The recipient is to be selected by the chairperson of the Department of Marketing in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The recipient is to be a United States citizen.
The Arthur and Louise Olsen Student Investment Planning Competition
The Arthur and Louise Olsen Student Financial Planning Competition was established in 2004 by Bonnie Janelle in memory of her parents as a tribute to their collaboration as a couple in astute and sound investment planning practices. It is Mrs. Janelle’s desire to honor her parents in such a way that assists students in their academic pursuits through tuition assistance as they demonstrate creative yet practical applications of their knowledge in the area of investment planning.
The Arthur and Louise Olsen Student Investment Planning Competition is open to undergraduate students at The University of Akron who have completed the investments course (6400:343 or the equivalent). Students will be asked to analyze a case study (which will vary from year to year) and develop, based on the facts presented in the case study, a sound investment plan. Students will prepare an Investment Policy Statement and corresponding investment portfolio based on the case study. The student’s IPS and portfolio will be judged by a jury panel of investment and financial planning professionals representing the Department of Finance Advisory Board, with the winner(s) announced at the annual Department of Finance luncheon, held each April. The winner(s) will receive a tuition credit to be applied the following semester.
The Charlotte Ostroff Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship fund was established by Samuel Ostroff '32, a graduate of the College of Engineering and Commerce in memory of his late wife, Charlotte Ostroff. Charlotte was described by her son as "one of the gentlest souls God ever put on this earth. She placed implicit trust and faith in everyone, and always optimistically believed things would work out for the best. She never had an unkind or uncharitable thought about anyone." This scholarship serves as a tribute to all that Charlotte Ostroff accomplished and to her unwavering devotion to her husband and children during her 56 years of marriage. The scholarship will be awarded to a freshman student enrolled full-time in the College of Business Administration and also enrolled in The University of Akron Honors Program. The scholarship is renewable for four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.5 grade point average.
The Stephen A. and Sondra D. Perry Scholarship
The Stephen A. Perry and Sondra D. Perry Endowed Scholarship was established out of Mr. and Mrs. Perry’s desire to support and encourage students who have demonstrated the capacity and motivation to achieve significant educational and career goals in life and require financial assistance to do so. Mr. Perry began his higher education with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from The University of Akron in 1970 and Mrs. Perry attended the University of Tennessee. Both received assistance in obtaining higher education and they recognize the importance of assisting others to do the same.
Annual distributions from the scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration with preference being given to students from Stark County. Scholarship recipients must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average. Scholarship funds shall be directed to tuition, fees and books.
The Edmamae Polen Endowed Scholarship in Business
Ednamae Polen graduated in the top two percent of her class at The University of Akron in 1940, majoring in Business Administration. While working for the head of the marketing department at The BFGoodrich Company, she was a key factor in its success. Her career then took her to the burgeoning transportation industry, where she worked for the head of Coastal Trucking Company/Coastal Tank Lines, Inc. of Akron. In 2002, Ms. Polen established The Ednamae Polen Endowed Scholarship in Business for the support of women students in the College of Business Administration.
To qualify for assistance, women students must be in good standing in the College of Business Administration. Preference will be given to active members of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Grants will cover tuition, fees, books, room and board, all or in part. The Office of Student Financial Aid will select the scholarship recipients.
The Bert A. Polsky Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1970 by contributions from family and friends of the late Bert A. Polsky, revered Akron community and business leader and dedicated member of the University's Board of Directors. Earnings from this fund are used to provide scholarship assistance to worthy students in the College of Business Administration.
The George E. Price Scholarship
The George E. Price Scholarship was established by the National Association of Purchasing Managers of Akron in honor of George E. Price, Jr., a former member of the chapter and national president of the association, for his contribution to the field of industrial purchasing. The scholarship is to be awarded to marketing or materials management majors who have attained junior or senior standing. Also the applicant must have either: (1) an overall GPA of 2.75 or better, or (2) a GPA of 3.0 or better in marketing or materials management. The applicant must have successfully completed or currently be enrolled in the Purchasing course. Selection of the recipient is to be determined by the Marketing Department and representatives of the National Association of Purchasing Managers.
Price Waterhouse Alumni Scholarship
Scholarship awards are presented annually to outstanding junior accounting majors who have been employed and who have been active in campus activities. Support for this scholarship fund is provided by University alumni employed by Price Waterhouse.
The Richard C. Rea, CPA Scholarship Fund
The Richard C. Rea, CPA Scholarship Fund was established by Rea & Associates Inc. to honor the founding partner on the firm’s 50th anniversary. The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen intending to major in accounting. Recipients are determined by a faculty committee with a preference given to students with a high academic achievement. Recipients must be a resident of a county in which Rea and Associates Inc. has an office.
The Roger T. and Judith A. Read Endowed Scholarship in Business Administration
As strong benefactors and loyal advocates of their alma mater, Roger and Judy Read demonstrate their support across many areas of The University of Akron, from academic areas to arts and culture to intercollegiate athletics. For the Read’s, students are a priority, as they have demonstrated by establishing named scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The Roger T. and Judith A. Read Endowed Scholarship in Business Administration represents the third scholarship award they have established at The University of Akron.
A scholarship bearing the Read name in the College of Business Administration is fitting and appropriate, given Roger’s history with the College. He received a BS in Management in 1963 and an MBA in 1966. His affiliation with his alma mater continued as an active alumni volunteer through most of his professional career with the Harwick Chemical Company and was a recipient of the highest honor the College of Business Administration bestows upon graduates, the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Award, in 1989. He is a current member and past Chairman of the College of Business Administration’s Advancement Council as well as an active member of the Council’s nominating committee and has been instrumental in recruiting new members for service.
In establishing the Roger T. and Judith A. Read Endowed Scholarship in Business Administration, it is the Read’s desire to support juniors and seniors in the College of Business Administration who have maintained a 3.5 GPA in their collegiate studies with selection of recipients made by the College of Business Administration’s Scholarship Committee.
The Patrick S. and Nancy Steinkerchner Roberts Endowed Business Scholarship
The Patrick S. and Nancy Steinkerchner Roberts Endowed Business Scholarship was established in 1998 as a demonstration of their appreciation for their alma mater and the fine education they received. Pat '88, '96 and Nancy '84, '86, '92 have had a long, involved history with The University of Akron. Pat received his BSBA in marketing in 1988 and his Masters in Public Administration in 1996. He was active in The Accounting Association, Pi Sigma Epsilon and Student Toastmasters. Pat joined the University's Department of Development in 1993 and is currently the Executive Director of the Alumni Association. Nancy has received three degrees from The University of Akron with a BSIM in 1984, MBA (Marketing) in 1986, and a J.D. in 1992. Nancy was involved in Omicron Delta Kappa, Delta Sigma Pi, Rho Lambda, women's basketball, and senior class board. She has remained active with Delta Gamma and is a member of The National Alumni Association Board of Directors. Nancy is legal counsel and Director of Information Systems for her family-owned business, American Pro-Mold. This endowed scholarship provides an annual award renewable to a worthy business student enrolled at The University of Akron. First preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need with a GPA of at least 2.5. The scholarship recipient must be actively involved in student organizations and demonstrating leadership skills. Selection will be made by the College of Business in conjunction with Pat and Nancy Roberts.
The Galen J. Roush Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1979 by the GAR Foundation as a lasting tribute to the late Galen J. Roush, Akron business and community leader whose organizational genius led to the founding of Roadway Express Inc. The Roush Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate finance or accounting majors enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Selection of recipients is determined by the University Scholarship Committee and dean of the college.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Annual Scholarship
The Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Annual Scholarship, established May 2006, was created to financially support students in the Department of Management in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron.
The first preference for recipients is a student with a major in Management and a minor in International Business. The scholarship is awarded each year by the Department of Management in the College of Business Administration, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid, to a full-time student maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA. The recipient will receive one half of the award in the fall term and the remaining half in the spring term. The scholarship can be awarded through the recipient’s senior year, if applicable.
The Staci Ann Schoeppner Memorial Scholarship in Accounting
The Staci Ann Schoeppner Memorial Scholarship in Accounting was established in memory of Staci Ann Schoeppner, Class of 1993, by her family. Staci was a warm, friendly person who possessed an intense curiosity about the world around her and a never ending willingness to help others. She set high goals for herself and knew no limitations. Staci was active in R.H.P.B. and served as her Hall Treasurer. She was also an active member of the Accounting Association where she served as Director of Career Sessions. Staci received the Outstanding Senior Award from the Accounting Association and Senior Recognition from The University of Akron prior to graduating from the University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Upon graduating, she began to work with the Auditing Department of Payless Shoe Source, where she had worked while she was studying at the University. Staci was a 1988 graduate of Perry High School where she became a member of The National Honor Society in her junior year. She was an active member of the Marching, Concert and Symphonic Bands, received Medals of Excellence in Solo and Ensemble performances, received an Award for Language (Spanish) and was published in WHO'S WHO. She also received the Girl Scout Silver Award. A renewable scholarship shall be awarded to an Accounting student in the College of Business Administration who is an active member of the Accounting Association, works at least part-time, is active in at least one other campus organization, maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or better, and demonstrates financial need. The scholarship recipient shall be selected by the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee in consultation with an Advisor from the Accounting Association and members of the Schoeppner family.
The Everett and Rebecca Slayman-Gallagher Endowed Scholarship
The Everett and Rebecca Slayman-Gallagher Scholarship, established in June 2005, was created to financially support students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron.
A native of Akron and a Buchtel High School graduate, Rebecca A. Slayman-Gallagher received an accounting degree from The University of Akron in 1979. While a student at UA, she was inducted into several honorary societies including Alpha Lambda Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa and Rho Lambda. Upon graduation, she relocated to the Washington, D.C. area, working for such organizations as Price Waterhouse and Deloitte Haskins & Sells. She also served as a tax planner with Mobil Oil in Fairfax, VA, before returning to Ohio. Currently, Slayman-Gallagher is corporate taxes director for Big Lots Stores Inc. of Columbus. Slayman-Gallagher supports her alma mater as a member of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy Advisory Board. She is also a member of HELP-OHIO, a grassroots movement to positively influence state legislators on funding issues for higher education. She is a member of the Retail Industry Leaders Association.
The scholarship will be awarded by the Accounting Department in the College of Business Administration, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid. All recipients must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) within the College of Business Administration and meet the minimum coursework requirements of The University of Akron. The scholarship recipient will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and exhibit financial need.
The Dean E. Smith Family Scholarship Fund
Dean E. Smith’s family has sent four generations of students to The University of Akron. Dean’s Grandfather, William E. Smith, was a principal in the Atwater schools and had a master’s degree from the University. Dean’s father, E. Leland Smith, received his bachelors and master’s degrees from the University and taught for 38 years at Kenmore High School. Dean’s aunt, Opal Faye Smith, also attended the University and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Dean’s four sons are all graduates of the University. The Smith family has been an important part of The University of Akron Family.
Dean was an outstanding student during his days in the College of Business Administration. Dean pledged the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity during his undergraduate days and continues to be involved with the Fraternity. He was the business manager of the Buchtelite and named to Who’s Who of College and University students. After graduating in 1954, Dean proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and is involved in Veteran affairs to this day, with special interest in World War II history.
Dean worked for over twenty years at Ohio Bell in Akron. During that time he attended Law School in the evenings and was awarded his J. D. in 1972. Dean established a private practice as an estate-planning attorney and has been most entrepreneurial in the development of his practice. Dean makes numerous presentations each year to groups of individuals to assist them with their will, retirement, and estate planning. Dean has also been very active with a number of community organizations, including Kiwanis.
Dean E. Smith has been a generous benefactor and ardent proponent of The University of Akron. To date, Dean and his many philanthropic clients have provided over $7 million to The University of Akron. It is a very generous legacy that continues to grow through the years.
It is Dean’s intention that his endowed scholarship be used to provide support for students in the College of Business Administration. The ideal recipient will be the student who, while maintaining high academic standards, finds time to actively participate in the activities of the college and in student or fraternity or sorority life. Annual awards from this scholarship are to be made by the College of Business Administration in collaboration with Student Financial Aid.
The Spector & Saulino Scholarship Fund in Accounting
The Spector & Saulino Scholarship Fund in Accounting was established in 1996 by Spector & Saulino, Inc. The scholarship will be awarded to a third year student to be used towards their fourth year tuition. The recipient must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 with the student earning 20 percent of tuition.
The Julia Mikis Stell Scholarship in Accounting
The Julia Mikis Stell Scholarship Fund in Accounting was established in 1992 by Robert and Julia Stell. The scholarship is in recognition of the Stells' belief in higher education and their desire to assist young people. The Julia Mikis Stell Scholarship is to be awarded to a resident of the City of Akron attending The University of Akron who is an accounting student in the College of Business Administration with a 3.00 or better grade point average. The scholarship is to be awarded for the duration of the student's academic program, provided he or she remains eligible.
The Suarez Corporation Industries Scholarship for Direct Marketing
The Suarez Corporation Industries Scholarship for Director Marketing was established in 1997 by Suarez Corporation Industries (SCI) and Benjamin D. Suarez, an alumnus of The University of Akron. Since SCI regularly recruits University of Akron graduates, this scholarship is designed to promote the study of direct marketing. Twelve scholarships for tuition and materials are provided each semester for students in the Direct Marketing course in the College of Business Administration. Qualified applicants will be business students who will have attained sophomore, junior or senior standing by Fall 1997. First preference will be given to marketing majors. Scholarship selection is dependent on learning ability, judgment, creativity, the ability to envision things that do not yet exist, verbal skills, ambition, drive, persistence, the entrepreneurial spirit and salesmanship. The process of recipient selection for scholarship will be jointly conducted by the Department of Marketing and the SCI Education Manager. Direct marketing is a term describing "remote" sales to prospective customers where advertising costs and sales results are measured and reported in a timely manner. Used by most Fortune 500 Companies, consumer and business-to-business direct marketing growth is outpacing total US sales growth. Areas of course study include direct mail, catalog, telemarketing, television, newspaper, magazine, internet, computer database, customer and prospect segmentation, research, testing and customer lifetime value.
The Tax Executives Institute, Inc., Cleveland Chapter Graduate Assistant Award
Tax Executives Institute, Inc. (TEI) is a professional organization of business executives who are responsible for taxation matters on an administrative or policy-making level, or whose work is otherwise primarily concerned with the problems of business taxation. TEI was founded in June 1944 by a group of 15 prominent corporate tax executives in New York City. Since then, TEI has grown steadily and today has more then 5,000 members in 53 separate chapters.
The Cleveland chapter of TEI has approximately 120 members in the greater northeast Ohio area and holds monthly meetings from September through May of each year. The Cleveland chapter will award $3,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year for graduate assistantships in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. The funds are to be awarded $1,500 per semester. After the end of the 2006-2007 academic year, this assistantship will be awarded as funds are available. The recipient must be a student of the MTAX program within the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, and the Chair of the School will choose the recipient(s).

The Cleveland chapter will award a scholarship of $750 for the fall 2003 semester to two (2) junior- or senior-level accounting majors. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to qualify for this scholarship. The Office of Student Financial Aid will select the scholarship recipients.
The Thomas H. Taylor, Sr. Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Kenneth E. Taylor in memory of his grandfather, Thomas H. Taylor, Sr., who had a successful career in industrial sales as an employee, then owner of Broadview Heights-based Ohio Machinery Co. Ohio Machinery Co., now known as Ohio CAT, is the authorized, exclusive distributor of Caterpillar equipment and engines throughout the state of Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana. The Thomas H. Taylor, Sr. Scholarship Fund will benefit students in The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration who are pursuing degrees in sales through the Ronald R. and Diane C. Fisher Institute for Professional Selling. As a member of the Fisher Institute’s Advisory Board, Mr. Taylor also hopes the scholarship will assist the Fisher Institute in its mission of attracting, educating, and graduating quality students who are fully prepared for careers in professional selling.
The Thomas H. Taylor, Sr. Scholarship is to be awarded to two (2) sales majors with preference given to students who demonstrate an interest in industrial/capital goods distribution. Should no candidates surface with that criteria, consideration will be given to general sales majors with selection to be made by the director of the Fisher Institute. Students should apply for the Scholarship in writing to the Ronald R. and Diane C. Fisher Institute for Professional Selling.
The Timken International Scholarship
The Timken International Scholarship, established in 2001, enhances the continuing spirit of partnership between The Timken Company and The University of Akron. Preparing competent and responsible future leaders in the field of international business is the central mission of the Timken International Scholarship. The Timken International Scholarship makes available full academic undergraduate scholarships to the sons and daughters of full-time Timken associates, subsidiaries, and retirees outside the United States and Canada. The annual competition for these awards, administered by The Timken Company, identifies and honors academically talented students seeking degrees in international business.
Valmark Securities, Inc. Financial Planning Scholarship
Valmark Securities, Inc. created the Valmark Securities, Inc. Financial Planning Scholarship for students majoring in Finance or Accounting at The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide tuition and fees assistance for a deserving student who has a career goal of personal financial planning and intends to qualify for CFP® mark. Each year one scholarship in the amount of $3,000 will be awarded to a student chosen by Finance Department faculty and Valmark representatives. The scholarship is awarded for one year only, and can be awarded only once to an individual student.
The M. Catherine and David C. Vernon International Business Scholarship
The M. Catherine and David C. Vernon International Business Scholarship was established in 1999 through an initial gift from Mr. and Mrs. Vernon to benefit student(s) studying international business at The University of Akron. The M. Catherine and David C. Vernon International Business Scholarship recipient(s) will be enrolled in the College of Business Administration pursuing a degree in International Business. Selection of the Vernon Scholar(s) will be consistent with the criteria established by faculty of the Institute for Global Business. The following criteria will be considered when determining the recipient(s): class rank, grade point average, ACT score, extra-curricular, activities and language skills. The M. Catherine and David C. Vernon International Business Scholarship will preferably be awarded to one student for four years, with a gift of $1,000 per year.
Cora and Sidney Walker Scholarship Fund
With a gift from his estate, the late Sidney Walker established the Cora and Sidney Walker Scholarship Fund. A 1931 graduate of The University of Akron, it was Mr. Walker’s wish to foster educational opportunities for talented and deserving undergraduate students in the College of Business Administration with preference given to students focusing on entrepreneurial studies or a marketing degree.
The William A. and Mildred C. Walzer Scholarship Fund
The William A. ('39) and Mildred C. ('46) Walzer Scholarship Fund was established in 1994. William and Mildred are both graduates of the College of Business Administration and retired from BFGoodrich. They have been loyal supporters of the College for over fifty years. The scholarship will assist undergraduate students in the College of Business Administration based on academic accomplishments and leadership qualities. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Awards may be used to meet the expenses of tuition, books, or fees. The recipient will be selected by the College of Business Administration in cooperation with the Office of Financial Aid.
