Department of Development College of Fine & Applied Arts The Akron Press Club Scholarship Program
The Akron Press Club Scholarship Program was created in 1999 by the board of The Akron Press Club to recognize Colleges and Universities within a five-county area that actively support the Press Club. For the first five years of the program, an annual award will be presented to a deserving junior or senior student who is majoring in communications, journalism, or public relations at The University of Akron. The annual award will increase for the sixth and subsequent years of the program.
To be eligible, a student must have junior or senior status at The University of Akron during the semester in which the award will be paid; demonstrate outstanding academic performance as evidenced by his or her academic transcript; be pursuing a declared major in communications, journalism, or public relations; and show professional promise through a track record of involvement in professional work or internships or student activities related to the field; samples of work, and an essay describing plans for a career in communications, journalism, or public relations. Based upon the aforementioned criteria, the University's scholarship committee will select a recipient. A student may receive the award a maximum of two times by going through the application and review process, but the award cannot be renewed automatically.
The Akron Press Club Scholarship will be promoted in all literature concerning awards and in presentations to prospective students. A member of the Press Club's Board will be present to make the award, and each annual award will be publicized by the University with prominent mention of The Akron Press Club.
The Akron Sertoma Club Fund for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
The Akron Sertoma Club Fund for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology was established with a gift in spring 2002. Proceeds will be used to fund the hiring of a graduate student assistant, and/or to purchase clinical equipment and supplies. Use of the funds will be designated by The Akron Sertoma Club and administered by the Director of the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in consultation with the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology coordinators.
The Doris S. Aldrich Endowed Leadership Award and Scholarship
Faculty, friends, and students established this award and scholarship in 1989 to honor Professor Emeritus Doris Aldrich for her outstanding contributions to dietetics and, in particular, to the Coordinated Undergraduate Program, developed in 1975. The award is presented annually to an outstanding junior or senior in dietetics with preference given to students with a high GPA and demonstrated leadership skills. The engraved plaque is displayed in the office of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences, and the scholarship is based on the size of the growing endowment. Selection of recipients is made by the School of Family and Consumer Sciences dietetic faculty.
The Homer F. Allen Memorial Award
The Homer F. Allen Memorial Award is to be presented annually in the name of the late President of the Goodyear Musical Theatre, through an endowment created by the Goodyear Employees Activities Committee, Inc., to the outstanding undergraduate major in the area of Theatre. The selection of the recipient of this Award will be determined by the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts upon the recommendation of the head of the Theatre program.
The James E. and Margaret A. Alpeter Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music
The James E. and Margaret A. Alpeter Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music was created in 1998 to recognize their many contributions to The University of Akron and the Akron community. James, a prominent Akron attorney, was a graduate of The University of Akron and Western Reserve Law School. Margaret, a classical pianist, was a graduate of Oberlin College and the Juilliard School of Music. The earnings from this endowment will be used to provide scholarship assistance to recruit an outstanding student planning to major in music or for a current student enrolled in the School of Music. Preference will be given to a student studying piano, but the scholarship is not restricted to a piano major.
The American Greetings Endowed Graphic Design Scholarship
The American Greetings Endowed Graphic Design Scholarship was established in 1986. The income from the endowment will be awarded annually to an outstanding student entering his or her senior year in the School of Art’s graphic design program. The recipient is to be chosen through a juried portfolio competition held each spring and judged by a faculty committee.
The Barbara N. Armstrong Scholarship in Family Studies
This endowed education fund was originally established in 1981 by graduate assistants in the Department of Home Economics and Family Ecology in honor of Barbara N. Armstrong, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Home Economics and former head of the department who retired in 1989. An outstanding teacher, deeply committed to the pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Armstrong was the rare teacher who could make learning fun and who gave her students gifts which will last a lifetime. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate student seeking a degree in family or child development or child-life studies. Recipients of the award are to be determined by the Scholarship Committee in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Financial need and academic excellence are the primary requisites.
The Art History Student Travel Fund
The Art History Student Travel Fund was created to allow students in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art to take advantage of opportunities to study art history. This fund will provide resources for travel-related expenses for an art major, with preference given to an art history major. The recipient(s) will be selected by the Director of the School of Art in coordination with the School of Art Scholarship Committee.
The Ashton Prize Fund
Cash awards are given to undergraduates for excellence in oral interpretation and original oratory from The Ashton Prize Fund created in 1997 by Oliver C. Ashton for excellence in reading and recitations.
The Dr. Mark S. Auburn Scholarship in Theatre Arts
The Dr. Mark S. Auburn Scholarship in Theatre Arts was created in 1998 through proceeds from the University production of Love Letters presented by Dr. Auburn and his wife Dr. Sandy K. Auburn in honor of the 30th Anniversary of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Earnings from this fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a non-major student or students who participated as an actor or crew chief in a University Theatre production in a previous semester, based on the recommendation of the dean of the college. The Scholarship is open to undergraduate student(s) and is renewable so long as the recipient(s) continues to participate in University Theatre productions.
The Dr. Sandy Korman Auburn Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
The Dr. Sandy Korman Auburn Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology was created in 1998 through proceeds from the University production of Love Letters presented by Dr. Auburn and her husband, Dr. Mark S. Auburn, in honor of the 30th Anniversary of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Earnings from this fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving speech-language pathology and audiology major with demonstrated need, based on recommendation of the School faculty. The Scholarship is open to an undergraduate or graduate student and is renewable.
The Auditory-Verbal Clinic Scholarship Fund
The Auditory-Verbal Clinic Scholarship Fund was established in fall 2000 to provide assistance for graduate Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology students who are planning professional careers in pediatrics. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected annually by the Director(s) of the Auditory-Verbal Clinic in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Beverly W. Barker Scholarship in Music
This scholarship was established in 1993 by Dr. H. Kenneth Barker, Dean Emeritus of the College of Education, who has provided a lifetime of service to The University of Akron. The scholarship is in honor of his wife, Beverly W. Barker, who served as assistant head of the School of Music in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and has a lifelong appreciation of music. It is her request that her scholarship support be used to assist a talented and outstanding keyboard student.
The Mary Walsh Berns’ Endowment
The Mary Walsh Berns’ Endowment was established by Clara and Herb Berns to provide scholarship support for students in the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The Endowment honors the Berns’ daughter-in-law, who works as a sign language interpreter. Use of the funds will be determined by the Director of the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
The Bidwell Photography Residency
The Bidwell Photography Residency was established for the purpose of enriching the academic program in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, recognizing the interests of Laura and Fred Bidwell in photography. The visiting photographer will be selected by the Bidwells and members of the photography faculty in the Myers School of Art. During the Residency the artist will conduct master classes with students and present a public lecture.
The Bittle Residency in Jazz Endowment Fund
The Bittle Residency in Jazz Endowment Fund was established by University of Akron Trustee Edward L. Bittle (B.A., 1968) and his wife, Frances Yates Bittle (B.S., 1982 and J.D., 1988), to enrich The University of Akron Jazz Studies Program. The Endowment will provide funding to bring at least one important jazz musician to campus annually to present master classes and a public concert. The gift reflects the Bittles’ long-time interest in jazz and education and will provide opportunities for students to receive mentoring and inspiration from leading jazz musicians.
The Claudia J. Bowers-Sawyer Scholarship in Family Studies
The Claudia J. Bowers-Sawyer Scholarship in Family Studies has been created to assist a deserving student in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences who is pursuing a degree in Family Studies. The recipient will be selected annually by the Director of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences based on academic standing, need for financial assistance, and volunteer involvement in community life. The scholarship is renewable annually.
The Madeline Bozzelli Scholarship
The Madeline Bozzelli Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is majoring in marketing, public relations or one of the fine arts—music, dance, theatre or art. The scholarship was established in 1999 by Libert Bozzelli to recognize his wife’s life-long community involvement and her interest in education. Because of their volunteerism, the Bozzelli’s wish to encourage University of Akron students to become involved in their University and community. The annual scholarship will be given to a full-time undergraduate student, regardless of need, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Recipients must have demonstrated involvement in University organizations and in their community. The University’s Scholarship Committee will select the recipient in cooperation with the Dean of the College of Business Administration and the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
Madeline, who was named an Honorary Alumna in 1990, has served a multitude of civic organizations including the following board memberships: Akron Symphony Orchestra, United Way, Friends of Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital Community Board, St. Thomas Hospital Women’s Board, Summit County Democratic Party, International Institute, Ohio Ballet Board and Women’s Board, American Heart Association, Project Learn, Soapbox Derby, Ohio Erie Canal, Family Services, The Blind Center and The American Cancer Society. She has also volunteered for Inventure Place. Madeline has been credited for helping raise millions of dollars in her 30 years as a volunteer. Madeline and Libert have four grown children and live in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
The C. Robert Brashares Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Music
The C. Robert Brashares Endowed Memorial Scholarship was created in 2006, through the generosity of Jeffrey R. Brashares, in honor of his late father, C. Robert Brashares (1915 – 1992). Mr. C. Robert Brashares was the Director of Music at John Simpson Middle School in Mansfield, Ohio for over 40 years and the Director of Choral Music at Main Street United Methodist Church during that same period of time. He was graduated from Ohio University in Athens of Ohio, with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music Education. For Bob, as his friends called him, it was ALL about helping other people.
The Mildred Heter Buckingham Memorial Scholarship
This endowed fund was endowed fund was established by Lisle M. Buckingham as a memorial tribute to Mildred Heter Buckingham. Income is used to reward full time students who show promise in the field of applied music and who are recommended by the School of Music.
The Buffe Family Scholarship in Social Work
The Buffe Family Scholarship in Social Work was established in 2005 by William E. Buffe. Mr. Buffe created the scholarship in honor of his late wife Jane C. Buffe and daughter, Anne E. Buffe, both of whom had been dedicated social workers in Akron, Ohio and New York City, respectively.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving full-time graduate or undergraduate student majoring in social work at The University of Akron. The recipient shall be selected by the director of the School of Social Work in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Business Professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship
The Business Professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship was established in April 2000 to provide financial assistance for a student in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recipient must have a strong academic record and financial need, as well as interest in a career in business, industry, entrepreneurial ventures or non-profit organizations. Recipients will be selected by the Director of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Mary B. Capotosto Endowed Scholarship
The Mary B. Capotosto Endowed Scholarship was established in 1991. The scholarship is to benefit one student majoring in communicative disorders. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of a high grade point average. The recipient will be selected by the Faculty Scholarship Committee within the Department of Communicative Disorders.
The Tracey Thompson Cardelle Scholarship Fund in Dietetics
The Tracey Thompson Cardelle Scholarship Fund in Dietetics was established to honor the memory of Tracey, a 1988 graduate who died in October 1999, following a courageous battle with cancer. The scholarship provides financial assistance for deserving University of Akron students enrolled in the Dietetics program of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients are required to have a 2.5 grade point average and will be selected by the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Carousel Theatre Scholarship
The Carousel Theatre Scholarship was established in January 2000 by the owners and staff of the Carousel Dinner Theatre in Akron. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a talented student majoring in theater with preference given to a student working at Carousel. Recipients will be selected by the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Dr. Caesar A. Carrino Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts
The Dr. Caesar A. Carrino Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts was created through a gift from David L. Bennett in recognition of the guidance and encouragement he received from Dr. Carrino as a student at The University of Akron. Dr. Carrino served as Dean of The University of Akron’s Evening College and Summer Sessions from 1974 until his retirement from the University in 1989.
This scholarship will assist a deserving student who is majoring in any program within the College of Fine and Applied Arts, with preference given to a student majoring in Mass Media-Communication or on the Public Relations track for Business and Organizational Communication. The recipient will be selected annually, by the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid based on financial need. Mr. Bennett would like to participate in the selection process.
The Gena Carroll Dance Scholarship
The Gena Carroll Dance Scholarship has been created to assist promising advanced and intermediate level dance students with a financial need at the Dance Institute of The University of Akron. This perpetual fund has been established as a tribute to Mrs. Carroll's 28 years of devotion and inspiration to the Dance Institute. Recipients will be selected by the Head of the Dance Institute and Director of the School of Dance. The grant is renewable for more than one term.
The Ellen M. Casey Endowed Scholarship In Music
The Ellen M. Casey Endowed Scholarship in Music was established through a bequest from Miss Casey, a 1942 graduate of The University of Akron, who played the piano and had a life-long love of music. The Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the School of Music who is majoring in keyboard and/or music education. Recipients will be chosen by the Director of the School of Music, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Beatrice Chauncey Endowed Scholarship
The Beatrice Chauncey Endowed Scholarship was established to benefit a worthy student within the School of Music. The recipient will be chosen by the School of Music in concert with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Ms. Beatrice Chauncey was a music major at Akron University from 1940-43, graduating with a B.S. in Education. Flute was her instrument. She served as a professor of music at East Carolina University for forty-one years, retiring in 1990. Ms. Chauncey has also generously established another music scholarship at East Carolina in the amount of $10,000 with a bequest for an additional $40,000.
The Beatrice A. Chauncey Music Scholarship
Beatrice A. Chauncey graduated from the School of Music in 1943. Miss Chauncey pursued graduate education including the master’s and professional diploma at Teachers College, Columbia University, from 1945 to 1948. Bea worked in public school settings in Wyoming, California, and Florida, before joining the faculty of East Carolina School of Music in 1949. Miss Chauncey then taught flute at the East Carolina School of Music forty-one years until her retirement in 1990.
The Beatrice A. Chauncey Music Scholarship is intended to bring outstanding students to the School of Music. The Scholarship will enable the Director of The School of Music to determine the highest priority scholarship need for the School and recruit the most promising students. Awards may be renewed for the four years of undergraduate study or may be awarded on a one-time basis, at the discretion of the Director of the School of Music.
The Margaret Wade Chenot Graduate Scholarship in Audiology
The Margaret Wade Chenot Graduate Scholarship in Audiology was established by Mrs. Chenot, class of 1932, in 2001 because of her interest in providing services to the hearing-impaired. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a graduate student pursuing a career in audiology who is enrolled in the School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. The recipient will be selected annually by the Director of the Audiology Program and the Director of the School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Bernard J. Clifford Memorial Award Fund
This award was established in 1983 on an endowed basis by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Bernard J. Clifford, assistant professor of social work and devoted member of the faculty for more than 14 years. Endowment income is to be made available to students preparing for careers in social work for the purchase of books, materials, travel and tuition. Qualifying students are to submit their requests to the head of the Department of Social Work.
The William H. Compton, Jr. Scholarship in Theatre Arts
The William H. Compton, Jr. Scholarship in Theatre Arts was established in 1998 with a gift from Mrs. Rosella Compton in honor of her son who earned his master’s degree in theatre arts in 1986. This endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a promising theatre major with demonstrated need, based on recommendation of the theatre faculty. The Scholarship is open to an undergraduate student and is renewable.
The Mariagrace Costa Endowment Fund for E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
This fund was established through a generous bequest by Mariagrace Costa, University of Akron alumna and patron of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Proceeds from this fund will provide important resources to meet the evolving needs of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, an outstanding performing arts complex. Use of the funds will be determined by the Executive Director of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
The Mariagrace Costa Youth Outreach Fund at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall
The Mariagrace Costa Youth Outreach Fund at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall was established by Mariagrace Costa, class of 2000 and 2002, to provide funds so that all schoolchildren have equal access to the diverse cultural offerings and performances at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Maria Costa has great memories of attending performances at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall as a student -- this fund will ensure that all school-age children and teenagers, regardless of economic circumstances, have the same opportunities. Proceeds from this fund will be used to purchase tickets to productions at the Hall for students and their parents, teachers, or mentors. Proceeds may also be used for related student outreach activities. Use of the funds will be determined by the Executive Director of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
The Dance Institute Benefit Fund
The Dance Institute Benefit Fund has been created to assist talented children with financial need enrolled in the Dance Institute of The University of Akron. The fund supports scholarships and artistic ventures that enhance the experience of all students at the Dance Institute, as well as an annual “Outstanding Teacher Award.”
The Malcolm J. Dashiell Scholarship Fund
The Malcolm J. Dashiell Scholarship Fund was created in 1997 through an estate gift from Janet Dashiell Gardner in memory of her husband who taught art at The University of Akron for 17 years and helped establish the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. Earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide financial assistance to students majoring in art for educational travel experiences, including foreign travel, sponsored study abroad, workshops, seminars, field trips, independent study, conferences and travel to temporary and permanent exhibits, which relate to art studies. Selection of the recipient(s) is to be determined by the faculty of the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, based on the student's completion of an application form available from the School Director's Office.
The Paul A. Daum Endowed Scholarship in the Theatre Arts
The Paul A. Daum Endowed Scholarship in the Theatre Arts, established in 1979 by Paul Daum, '64, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts, provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students majoring in the Theatre Arts. Selection of the recipients is determined by Professor Daum, during his lifetime, and the School Director, assisted by the Director of Student Financial Aid.
The Joanne J. Daverio Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts
The Joanne J. Daverio Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts was established to honor the memory of Joanne, a 1959 graduate with a degree in Speech. Throughout her lifetime Joanne remained involved with The University of Akron, and she served as a member of the College of Fine and Applied Arts Advancement Council from 1997 to 1999. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a student enrolled in one of the programs within the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The recipient will be selected annually by the Dean of the College in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and
Child Development
The Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and Child Development was created in 2002 by Susan D. and David D. Witt to honor their fathers, Bernard Prebynski and Dean Witt. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a Family Development or Child Development major in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recipient must have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, and will be asked to submit a short essay with the scholarship application describing how they meet this criterion, and explaining how the award will assist them in achieving their professional goals. The recipient will be selected by the Student Relations Committee of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with Drs. Susan D. and David D. Witt.
The Thomas E. DeBray EARLYJAS Society-Roland Paolucci Music Scholarship
The Thomas E. DeBray EARLYJAS Society-Roland Paolucci Music Scholarship was established by the EARLYJAS Society, an organization dedicated to promoting interest in traditional American jazz music. This scholarship program is to provide financial assistance for students in the School of Music who have an interest in performing traditional American jazz. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a talented student majoring in music with high academic standing. The student must participate in the University of Akron Jazz Ensemble. Recipients will be selected by the Director of the School of Music and the Coordinator of Jazz Studies in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Geraldine Deibler Endowed Scholarship
The Geraldine Deibler Endowed Scholarship was created in 1997 by Kent Jones to honor the memory of this sister, a 1952 graduate of The University of Akron who exhibited a life-long passion for art. Geraldine graduated with a degree in Medical Technology and was a member of Phi Mu sorority while attending the University. She was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities for 1952.
The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving student pursing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Myers School of Art, The University of Akron.
The Dr. Robert Deitchman Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Dr. Robert Deitchman Memorial Scholarship was created through the generosity of the family and friends of Dr. Robert Deitchman. Dr. Deitchman, a former University of Akron Professor in the School of Social Work, was committed to justice, equality, and community activism. To honor a lifetime of social involvement, the Dr. Robert Deitchman Memorial Scholarship will be made available to African American students pursuing a career in Social Work. The scholarship recipients must be entering their senior year and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all social work classes. Additionally, the scholarships will be equally distributed to a female and male student; if a male student is not selected, the scholarships will be awarded to two female students; and if this arrangement is not possible no scholarships will be awarded until either the first or second criteria are met. Any change in the distribution of funds will be determined by Mrs. Deitchman. The recipients of The Dr. Robert Deitchman Memorial Scholarship Fund will be determined by Mrs. Deitchman, or her appointed representative, along with the Chair of the School of Social Work and the Special Assistant to the President of the Office of Campus Diversity.
The Evelyn S. DeLong Endowed Scholarship in Music
The Evelyn DeLong Endowed Scholarship in Music was created by Miss DeLong in recognition of her life-long love of music. It will provide financial assistance for a student in the School of Music with preference given to an applicant with a disability or special needs. Miss DeLong is a 1965 graduate of The University of Akron who earned a masters degree from the Eastman School of Music.
The Mary B. Demetros Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Mary B. Demetros Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance for students studying art who have demonstrated ability and financial need. Mrs. Demetros was a painter who had a strong interest in art education and wished to help art students through her generous bequest. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art Scholarship Committee in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance. In addition to artistic talent, students with financial need and/or an interest in art education will be given preference.
The Evelyn Renner Denton Scholarship for Speech and Drama
This endowment was created by a gift to The University of Akron Foundation from Thomas G. Denton in loving memory of his wife, Evelyn. Mr. and Mrs. Denton both received their baccalaureate degrees from The University of Akron. It is Mr. Denton's intention this endowment benefit qualified and deserving students in the University's Speech and Theatre programs. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the Directors of the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration and the School of Communication.
The Director's Endowed Scholarship in Dance
The Director's Endowed Scholarship in Dance was established in 1994 through an initial gift from Dr. Kenneth D. Webster. The scholarship will be awarded when fully endowed and will provide financial assistance for a student in the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration who is majoring in dance. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected annually by the Director of the School in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Don and Lisa Drumm Endowed Scholarship Fund for the School of Art
As strong advocates and benefactors for arts education, Don and Lisa Drumm demonstrate their support across many areas in the Greater Akron, Ohio region. For the Drumm’s, students are a priority, as they have demonstrated by establishing this named scholarship in the College of Fine and Applied Art’s, School of Art.
A scholarship bearing the Drumm’s name in the School of Art is fitting and appropriate, given Don and Lisa Drumm’s history not only in the local arts community, but worldwide as well. Don Drumm, an internally recognized sculptor and pioneer craftsman, adopted the sun as his favorite medium, working in aluminum, pewter and other metals. His international reputation is shared by Lisa Drumm, a former teacher, and also a recognized artist. Together, they have enriched the Northern Ohio Landscape with their artistic endeavors, their community involvement and their philanthropic activities.
By establishing the Don and Lisa Drumm Endowed Scholarship in The School of Art, it is the Drumm’s desire to annually support a graduate(s) of the Akron Public School System who is entering The University of Akron’s School of Art. The selected student(s) must have demonstrated artistic talent and a financial need. The selection of the recipient(s) is to be made by the College of Fine and Applied Art, School of Art’s Faculty Scholarship Committee.
The James F. Dunlap Memorial Scholarship in Theatre
The James F. Dunlap Memorial Scholarship in Theatre was established in April 2000 with proceeds from the production "Fahrenheit 451" in honor of the long-time director of University Theatre. Dr. Dunlap led the theatre program for 23 years prior to his retirement in 1978 when he was named Professor Emeritus of Drama. He died in 1994. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a talented student majoring in theatre. Recipients will be selected by members of the Theatre faculty and/or the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Charlotte Essner Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts
The Charlotte Essner Scholarship in Fine and Applied Arts was established to provide financial assistance for a freshman or transfer student in the College of Fine and Applied Arts who is academically talented. The scholarship will be awarded annually alternating between the fine arts programs and the applied arts programs until the fund grows to support two awards annually. Mrs. Essner is associate professor emeritus of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. She taught Speech Language Pathology at the University of Akron from 1965 until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Essner also served as a member of the College of Fine and Applied Arts Advancement Council for many years. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts or his designee in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Scholarship Fund
The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Scholarship Fund was originally created in April, 2001. The scholarship shall now be used to support the Dr. V. Joanne Fleming Endowed Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences. Dr. Fleming wishes to combine these funds in order to make one scholarship award.
As stated in the description, the Dr. V. Joanne Fleming Endowed Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences provides financial assistance for a junior or senior in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences who plans a career as a teacher. The recipient must have a strong academic record and financial need. Recipients are selected by the Awards Committee of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Leona W. Farris Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in 1987 in recognition of Leona W. Farris, director of community involvement, who taught in the school for 20 years. The earnings from this endowed fund are used to encourage black university students majoring in family and consumer sciences. A faculty committee will determine the recipient or recipients from black students with a high grade point average, a commitment to community service, and financial need.
The Josephine Ellison Fitch and Foy Nelson Fitch Endowed Scholarship in Social Work
The Josephine Ellison Fitch and Foy Nelson Fitch Endowed Scholarship in Social Work was created in 1998 through a gift of their daughter, Dr. Virginia L. Fitch, Professor of Social Work. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a promising social work major with demonstrated need, based on recommendation of the School of Social Work faculty. The Scholarship is open to an undergraduate or graduate student and is renewable.
The Mary E. and David L. Flanders Endowed Scholarship
It is Mr. and Mrs. Flanders' intention with this scholarship to offer financial assistance to students who share their affection for the art of music and the science of chemistry. Mrs. Flanders, an accomplished pianist, graduated from The University of Akron in 1937 with a B.A. in sociology. Mr. Flanders received his undergraduate degree in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. He graduated from The University of Akron with an M.B.A. degree in 1960 followed by graduate work at M.I.T. Sloan School of Business. He is presently retired from service with the BFGoodrich Company in the Polymer Research division and in purchasing management.
The Mary E. and David L. Flanders Endowed Scholarship was established in 1995 with the interest of providing scholarship support for full-time undergraduate students enrolled in The University of Akron's School of Music and Department of Chemistry. Two scholarships will be awarded annually from the earnings of the endowed fund. The deans from the respective colleges will nominate one recipient, who must be approved by the University Scholarship Committee to receive this award.
The Dr. Nathan I. Galin Memorial Scholarship in Music
The Dr. Nathan I. Galin Memorial Scholarship in Music was created in 1997 through a gift from Doris K. Galin in memory of her husband who enjoyed a life-long appreciation of music and enjoyed helping young people. Earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide financial assistance to students majoring in music. Recipients of this scholarship will be selected annually by the School of Music faculty in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Gallery Circle Fund
The Mary Schiller Myers School of Art at The University of Akron has established an advocacy group known as The Gallery Circle, in support of The Emily Davis Gallery, and other on-campus art venues. The Gallery Circle will assist with special projects and exhibitions for the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art.
The Barbara and John C. Gillette Endowment for Art
The Barbara and John C. Gillette Endowment for Art was established for the purpose of enriching the academic program in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, recognizing Barbara’s appreciation for her training in the School and her work as an established Ohio painter. The endowment earnings may be used annually by the School for scholarships, visiting artists, equipment or other current needs as determined by the director of the School.
The Carlotta C. Greer Scholarship
An undergraduate scholarship in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences was established in 1962 by the late Carlotta C. Greer, Class of 1903.
The Dorthella L. Griffin Scholarship in Art
The scholarship is awarded by the director of the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art to a junior or senior art major. Preference shall be given to nontraditional students.
The Group One Broadcasting--Viola and Bernard Berk Scholarship Fund
Established in 1978 by Group One Broadcasting, this fund provides four scholarships covering tuition and fees, as well as books and/or expenses related to academic courses, for deserving undergraduates majoring in mass media communication. Selection of recipients is based on initiative, ability, and promise in the field of mass media communication, need, and academic qualifications. The scholarships are renewable annually based on continuing qualification.
The Dr. Virginia L. Gunn Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences
The Dr. Virginia L. Gunn Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences was created in 1997 through a gift from Marilyn E. Lemmon, Class of 1997, in honor of Dr. Virginia L. Gunn, Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at The University of Akron, who provided mentoring and encouragement. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide financial assistance, with preference given to a non-traditional student in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recipient will be selected by the faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid.
The Dominic J. Guzzetta Music Scholarship Fund
Established in 1984 by the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance in recognition of the accomplishments of Dr. Dominic J. Guzzetta, and in appreciation of the support and understanding Dr. Guzzetta showed towards the performing arts during his tenure as president of The University of Akron, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving music student.
The Nola M. Guzzetta Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1976 through the contributions of friends and relatives in memory of Nola Miller Guzzetta, beloved and devoted wife of President D.J. Guzzetta and friend of unswerving loyalty and dedication to the interests of the University, its students and faculty. Fund earnings are to be used by the University Scholarship Committee to reward academic achievement among deserving entering and undergraduate students pursuing a degree program in the School of Music’s Jazz Studies. Contributions to the fund are welcomed.
The Hall-Adams Scholarship in Communications
The Hall-Adams Scholarship was established in honor of Bill Hall, a successful insurance executive in Akron who died in 1973, and his daughter, Mary Hall Adams, who has a lengthy career in public relations. The scholarship will be awarded to students majoring in communications, will be selected on the basis of financial need, and they must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be a sophomore, junior or senior. The award is renewable, and the recipient will be selected annually by the Director of the School of Communication, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Robert F. Harris and Lucille S. Harris Scholarship Fund in Art Studies
This endowed scholarship was established in 1982 by Robert F. Harris, Class of 1928, and his wife, Lucille Scott Harris, both of whom have maintained unswerving loyalty and dedication to the interests of the University for many years. Income is used to provide tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students who are majoring in art studies.
The Abbie Hawk Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1983 by friends of Abbie Hawk, social worker, administrator, educator and friend to colleagues and children alike who knew and were assisted by her during a 41-year career as a social worker, 31 of which were spent with The Summit County Children’s Services Board.
Endowment income is to be made available to a deserving junior, senior or graduate student, with preference for a student interested in a career in the field of child or family welfare. Applicants will be asked to submit a one-page typed letter describing his or her career aspirations. The scholarship award is renewable. Selection of the recipient is to be made by the School of Social Work, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid, on the basis of merit and need without regard to race, creed, color, sex or national origin.
The Walter and Mary Effie Herberich Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 1965 by Mrs. Walter Herberich on an endowment basis. Annual income is used to provide scholarship assistance as determined by the University Scholarship Committee. First consideration is given to a blind student in the School of Music or the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration, or if not applicable, to a meritorious student in the School of Music or the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration as recommended by the head of the schools. If no student in these areas is eligible, the scholarship is awarded by the University Scholarship Committee in accordance with normal scholastic requirements.
The Clark and Grace Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund, established in 1975 by Mrs. Herbert L. Allshouse (Bertie Lou Hill), Class of 1952, in loving memory of her parents, provides scholarship aid for full time undergraduate students in need of financial assistance. Recipients and scholarship amounts are determined by the University Scholarship Committee with first preference given to worthy students majoring in music.
The Sharon A. Hollinger Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Theatre Arts
The Sharon A. Hollinger Memorial Endowed Scholarship was created in 1996 through an estate gift from Sharon Hollinger ’69, a theatre and dance costumer, and through gifts received in her memory. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide full tuition scholarship assistance to a deserving entering undergraduate student majoring in Theatre Arts. The scholarship is renewable annually. Selection of the recipient(s) is determined by the faculty of the Theatre Arts Program and the School Director.
The Boyd D. Hume Memorial Fund
The Advisory Committee of the Comprehensive Service to the Deaf and Hearing Impaired established this fund in 1980 in memory of Boyd D. Hume, a longtime member of the committee. Funds are used by the University’s School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, especially in the development of an interpreter’s training program.
The John R. and Maxine D. Hunter Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music Education
The John R. and Maxine D. Hunter Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Music Education was created in 1998 through a bequest from Mr. Hunter who was an entrepreneur as well as a musician and composer. The earnings from this endowment will be used to provide scholarship assistance to recruit an outstanding student planning to major in education or for a current student enrolled in the School of Music majoring in music education.
The Patrick W. Ickes Organ Scholarship
The Patrick W. Ickes Organ Scholarship was established in 2001 to encourage students with an interest in becoming church organists. The scholarship was created in memory of Pat Ickes, an accomplished musician who shared his love of music with all who heard him play. The Patrick W. Ickes Organ Scholarship will assist a talented student who is studying organ and sacred music, and demonstrates financial need. The recipient will be selected by the Director of the School of Music in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Lola K. Isroff Arts Assistance Endowed Fund
The Lola K. Isroff Arts Assistance Endowed Fund provides funding for a summer program opportunity for junior and senior high school students in the inner city Akron Public Schools. The Urban Art Education Experience will feature a summer camp that fosters collaboration among high school art teachers, Akron Public School students, and art education students at The University of Akron. In addition to the summer camp, the program will include Saturday art classes in conjunction with the Akron Art Museum, special art projects at Akron community centers, and seminars featuring guest speakers and artists-in-residence.
The International Council of Fine Arts Deans Endowed Scholarship
The International Council of Fine Arts Deans Endowed Scholarship was created in 1997 through a gift from the association, at the request of Dr. Linda Moore, former Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and Executive Director of ICFAD. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide financial assistance to students majoring in dance, upon recommendation of the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration.
The Italian American Professional and Business Men’s Club Scholarship
The Italian American Professional and Business Men’s Club Award was established in 1987. This annual award benefits a student of Italian descent majoring in one of the fine arts. The recipient will be determined by the dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts with preference given to a graduate student. It is available for two years in succession. If a graduate student of Italian descent is not identified for the award, another undergraduate may be the recipient.
The Dr. Gregory C. Keck Scholarship in Social Work
The Dr. Gregory C. Keck Scholarship in Social Work was established in 2005 by Dr. Gregory C. Keck. Dr. Keck is the founder and director of the Attachment and Bonding Center of Ohio, specializing in working with adoptive families whose children experienced early trauma. He has been an advocate for children, family, and professionals in the foster care and adoption system providing valuable educational tools, training, and support services both nationally and internationally since 1990. Dr. Keck has also published numerous articles and co-authored two books on the topic: Adopting the Hurt Child and Parenting the Hurt Child.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to either a graduate or undergraduate student(s) majoring in social work with preference given to students who have previously been in foster care or who have been adopted. If no student meets the above listed criteria, it is preferred that the student be majoring in social work with an emphasis in adoption and foster care. Students currently working in the foster care or adoption field may also qualify. The recipient(s) shall be selected annually by the director of the School of Social Work with input from Dr. Gregory Keck, in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

The Robert A. Keene Endowed Scholarship
Robert A. Keene graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Akron. After graduation, he was field engineer and project director for Bernard Construction Co. for 39 years prior to his retirement in 1985. In 2002, his widow Barbara Horner Keene established The Robert A. Keene Endowed Scholarship for the support of students in the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
To qualify for assistance, students must have established financial need and be in good standing in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Preference will be given to those majoring in Mass Media Communication. Preference will also be given to candidates who are involved in campus activities and who work to support their education. Grants will cover tuition fees, books, room and board, all or in part. The Office of Student Financial Aid will select the scholarship recipients.
The Walter P. and Fama N. Keith Endowed Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded annually to students majoring in music with recipients selected by the dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts upon recommendation of the head of the School of Music based upon need and achievement. This scholarship fund was established by the late Fama N. Keith (Mrs. Walter P.).
The Ruth and Bill Kelly Graduate Scholarship in Audiology
The Ruth and Bill Kelly Graduate Scholarship in Audiology was established by the founder of Bil-Jac Foods, Inc., and his wife because of their interest in education and in providing services to people suffering from hearing impairment. Mr. Kelly has been a long-time client of The University of Akron Audiology and Speech Center. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a graduate student pursuing a career in audiology, who is enrolled in the School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. The recipient will be selected annually by the director of the Audiology Program and the director of the School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The George W. and Alice M. Kessler Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1973 by George W. Kessler in loving memory of his wife, Alice M. Kessler, and was retitled in 1983 to also memorialize Mr. Kessler, who died that year. Earnings from the endowed fund provide scholarship assistance for worthy students majoring in art and/or music.
The Lucille Marie King Scholarship
The Lucille Marie King Scholarship was created in 2005 by Mrs. Mahala King Kay to honor the memory of her mother, Lucille Marie King. An annual award of $250 or more will be presented to a deserving Art major with demonstrated financial need in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art at The University of Akron.
To be eligible, a student must have sophomore, junior, or senior status at The University of Akron during the semester in which the award will be paid. The student must demonstrate a dedication to their area of study; stable academic performance as evidenced by his or her academic transcript with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be pursuing a declared major in Art. Based on the aforementioned criteria, the Myers School of Art Scholarship Committee will select a recipient. Mrs. Kay or a designated family representative would like to be involved in the selection process. Additional contributions to the fund are welcome.
The C. Landon and Cynthia W. Knight Endowed Fund in Music
The C. Landon and Cynthia W. Knight Endowment Fund in Music was established by Mrs. Knight in honor of her husband and in recognition of their mutual love of music and education. The fund will provide resources for individual students and student ensembles to experience travel/study opportunities offered through attending music conferences, professional meetings, music festivals and other academically related programs. Individual students will be chosen based on written proposals for travel/study experiences. They will be required to present a concert, written report or other materials for evaluation about their experiences as determined by the faculty selection committee. Directors of School of Music ensembles will submit proposals to the school director. Half of the annual earnings from the fund will be awarded to individual students and half will be used by student ensembles.
The Robert H. Knox Fellowship
The Robert H. Fellowship was established in 1987 to encourage students with an interest in becoming dispensing audiologists. Preference is given to a graduate student with a grade point average of at least 3.00. If an appropriate graduate student is not available for the award, the scholarship may be given to an undergraduate. The selection committee includes the Chair of the School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, one faculty member whose major area is audiology, and Robert H. Knox. When Robert Knox can no longer participate in the selection process, another dispensing audiologist will be asked to serve on the selection committee.
The Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship
Dr. Helen K. Cleminshaw established the Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship in 1987 to encourage students in the joy of learning. The scholarship was given in honor of her parents who first taught her the joy of learning. The earnings from this endowed fund provide scholarship assistance for deserving graduate or undergraduate students majoring in family and consumer sciences. Recipients will be determined by a faculty committee with a preference for students with a high grade point average and an interest in child development and/or family development.
The William B. Kurtz Memorial Scholarship in Theatre Arts
This memorial scholarship fund, established in 1989 by the family and friends of William B. Kurtz, provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate students majoring in technical theatre. Selection of the recipients is determined by the faculty of Theatre Arts.
The Dorothy Laubacher Award in Family and Consumer Sciences
The faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and friends established this award in 1977 in honor of Professor Emeritus Dorothy Laubacher, who taught in the school with distinction for 27 years. The award is presented annually to an outstanding sophomore or junior majoring in family and consumer sciences, with preference given to a student in food and nutrition. Recipients and award amounts are determined by the school faculty.
The Lavelli Family Scholarship in Dance
The Lavelli Family Scholarship in Dance was created by Lucinda Lavelli, director of the School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration, to honor her family’s pursuit of the arts and physical excellence. The scholarship will provide financial assistance for a junior or senior dance major at The University of Akron who has demonstrated academic and/or artistic excellence. The recipient will be selected annually by the Director of the School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The Betty Jane Lichtenwalter Scholarship
This scholarship was established from a memorial fund in the name of Betty Jane Lichtenwalter. Income from the endowment is awarded to worthy students majoring in music or speech.
The Mary Coates Longerich Scholarship
The Mary Coates Longerich Scholarship, established by Dr. Longerich in 1987, provides assistance for deserving students majoring in communicative disorders. Preference is given to a graduate student. However, if an appropriate graduate student is not available, the scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate. Recipients are selected by a departmental faculty committee.
The Malyuk Scholarship for Home Schooled Students
The Malyuk Scholarship for Home Schooled Students was established in 2003 to assist a talented and deserving student of music, dance, or art at The University of Akron. The Malyuks created this scholarship especially for home schooled students, because of their strong belief in the value of home schooling. Qualified students will have been home schooled at some time in their academic careers, in accordance with the Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 3301-34 (Rules for Excuses From Compulsory Attendance for Home Education) or comparable regulations set forth by the student’s home state. Eligible students will also have been accepted into the School of Music, the Dance Program, or the Myers School of Art, be full-time students, and will major in music, dance or art. The recipient will be selected by the College of Fine and Applied Arts in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid, with final approval given by Susan or Michael Malyuk. The scholarship will be awarded based on talent and/or financial need. The scholarship is renewable, but applicants must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to be eligible to reapply. The University of Akron is an equal education and employment institution.
