When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be the funds to do so.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 Named Scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. And across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2013 was $35,200.

Simmons, Robert S. Scholarship Fund
The Robert S. Simmons Scholarship Fund was established in February 2011 by Crain Communications in honor of Mr. Simmons' esteemed 36-year career.
Robert S. Simmons was vice president of Crain Communications Inc., publications director for Crain's rubber and polymer industry publications, and founder of the International Tire Exhibition and Conference, as well as several other conferences concentrated on the rubber and polymer industries. As publications director, a role he assumed in 1987, Mr. Simmons had responsibility for Crain's Rubber and Plastics News, European Rubber Journal (ERJ), Tire Business, Urethanes Technology International (UT), and Plastics News. Both ERJ and UT are based in Crain's London, UK office. In 1971, Mr. Simmons graduated from The University of Akron with a BA in marketing.
The Robert S. Simmons Scholarship Fund is awarded to students or graduate assistants pursuing a degree in sales and/or marketing at The University of Akron's School of Business Administration. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year to an undergraduate student maintaining a 3.0 or above GPA and who is active in student organizations.
