When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be the funds to do so.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 Named Scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. And across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2013 was $35,200.

Nash, Dr. Thomas L. Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Dr. Thomas L. Nash Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by the children of Dr. Thomas L. Nash, professor emeritus of geography and planning and former assistant varsity soccer coach who taught at The University of Akron from 1967 until 1994: Timothy (B.A.'85), Jill (B.S.'87), Patrick (B.A.'88), and Michael (A.S.'90 and B.S.'92). The scholarship fund recognizes Dr. Nash's support for and belief in the value of a combination of higher education and athletic achievement.
The Dr. Thomas L. Nash scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who participates in the varsity soccer program and who has a concentration of study in the Department of Geography & Planning (through either a major, recognized minor, or certificate). Recipients of the Dr. Thomas L. Nash scholarships will be nominated by the varsity soccer coach and confirmed by the faculty of the Department of Geography & Planning. Scholarship awards will be coordinated by The University of Akron Scholarship Committee.
