When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. And across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2013 was $35,200.

Nygaard, Karl O. Memorial Scholarship
The Karl O. Nygaard Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Karl O. Nygaard. The award was initiated by his family and friends in honor of all that he accomplished throughout his lifetime. Nygaard joined The BFGoodrich Company in 1954 as economist and corporate director of business research after four years with the Department of Commerce. He was named vice president/BFGoodrich brand replacement sales in 1971. In 1972 he was named vice president/marketing for the tire division of BFGoodrich. At the time of his death in 1975, he was senior vice president of The BFGoodrich Company with overall responsibility for manufacturing and technical activities of the tire company. This annual scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Department of Marketing. The recipient shall have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or above and have significant financial need. The recipient is to be selected by the chairperson of the Department of Marketing in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. The recipient is to be a U.S. citizen.
