Named Scholarships

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be the funds to do so.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 Named Scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. And across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2013 was $35,200.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider establishing a scholarship at The University of Akron. Scholarships can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study. LaGuardia, John A. and Vicki L. Endowed Scholarship

The John A. and Vicki L. LaGuardia Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by longtime University employee, alumnus, and dedicated friend John A. LaGuardia and his wife, Vicki. The University of Akron is fortunate to benefit from John’s leadership and vision. He has worked tirelessly to advance the mission of The University of Akron, along with the support of his wife, Vicki, and their five children. In addition to his work in public relations and governmental affairs, John’s door is always open for students, alumni, and friends who seek his advice or support.

John received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1970 from The University of Akron, and his master’s degree in educational administration in 1974. As a student, John was a member of Pi Kappa Epsilon fraternity and student government. He was a member of the men’s soccer team and served as president of his junior class. John excelled academically and was honored with several accolades, including Dean's List, and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, and Order of Omega Honorary societies.

Since February 1997 John has served as vice president of public affairs and development for the University and as a member of the University Foundation's Board of Trustees. His career at the University first began in 1971 when he was named associate director of alumni relations. In 1979 he was named director of alumni relations but left the University in 1985 to pursue a career in the business sector. He held positions in sales and management for Automated Tracking Systems and Xerox from 1985 to 1994, then returned to UA as director of alumni and governmental relations (1994-97). John’s enthusiasm and commitment to The University of Akron extend beyond his dedicated service, and he is known by many in the community for his kind and generous demeanor. John is a member of the Lamplighter's Club of the John R. Buchtel Society.

The John A. and Vicki L. LaGuardia Endowed Scholarship is to be awarded by the Office of Financial Aid of The University of Akron. Preference is to be given to graduates of Hoban High School or members of the Lone Star Fraternity.
