Named Scholarships

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be the funds to do so.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 Named Scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. And across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2013 was $35,200.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider establishing a scholarship at The University of Akron. Scholarships can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study. Efebera, Dr. Henry Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. Henry Efebera Memorial Endowed Scholarship was initially established in 2002 as the Dr. Henry Efebera Scholarship within The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron by colleagues of Dr. Efebera who wished to honor his memory.

Dr. Henry Efebera was an assistant professor at The University of Akron from fall 1999 until his untimely death on March 25, 2002. He taught tax, financial reporting and accounting systems and was known as an exceptional colleague with a friendly demeanor and a wry sense of humor. Henry and Dr. Yvonne Efebera-Vera met through the faculty of The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron. Henry earned his undergraduate degree in general science and ecology from the University of Ibadan, his M.B.A. from Texas Southern University in 1981, his M.S. in taxation from Georgia State University in 1993, and his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of South Florida in 1999. In December 2000, Henry was diagnosed with aggressive multiple myeloma (a blood cancer). At the time of his death, Dr. Efebera was married to Yvonne and had an eight-month-old son, Justin. Dr. Efebera will forever be remembered for his dignity in life and devotion to his students and family.

Dr. Yvonne A. Efebera-Vera, M.D., received her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University. She completed her residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Boston University Medical Center, and her fellowship in stem cell and marrow transplantation at The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology at The Ohio State University, with her research focus on multiple myeloma and stem cell and marrow transplant. Yvonne, her husband Percival Vera, and their sons, Justin and Pervonne, live in Dublin, Ohio.

The Dr. Henry Efebera Scholarship was initially established as an annual scholarship award in memory of Dr. Henry Efebera in 2002 by the faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. In 2012, Dr. Yvonne Efebera-Vera established The Dr. Henry Efebera Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The fund provides one scholarship annually to an undergraduate student majoring in accounting. The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee, led by the Chair of the School, selects recipients. Recipient must be an accounting major or graduate student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preferably, the recipient should be active in a student organization in the School of Accountancy.
