Virtual Labs: Access applications from anywhere, anytime

Using cloud technology, The University of Akron has expanded lab access for some computer applications to all students and faculty. This “always on” environment means you can access these programs at any time using any device.

New Spring 2013

There will be three virtual computer labs this Fall. A Statistical Software Lab, Engineering Software Lab, and a Productivity Software Lab.

Video Tutorial

In order to better understand how to use the Virtual Computer Lab, ITS has created a Web Training Video for the Virtual Computer Lab

Topics include how to...

  • download the Citrix client
  • connect to the Virtual Lab
  • open and save documents from your local client machine
  • shutdown the virtual machine.

Please click the follow link to watch the video http://videomedia.uakron.edu/train/VLab/Tour.htm

Access the virtual lab

To access the cloud applications from University laptops located in Bierce Library and the Student Union, click on the cloud ICON and sign into the virtual lab.

Personal computers: to access the virtual lab, you will need to install Citrix Receiver. Click on the download link below corresponding to the type of computer you are on.

Once the Citrix Receiver is installed, you can access the virtual lab through by clicking on the following link: https://labs.uakron.edu/index.action

You can also access the virtual lab through ZipLine.

IMPORTANT: Save to "Client C drive" NOT "C" drive

When working in the virtual lab and saving your work, save it to the "Client C drive", which is your computer.

Do not save to just the "C" drive, the first choice avialable in the drop down list. That is a virtual space and your work will be lost when you log off.

You can also save it to a USB key or other mobile device

IMPORTANT: Do Not Click Disconnect from the Citrix Menu at Top of Virtual Machine Screen

When you are finished working in the virtual lab you need to log off of the virtual machine like any other physical machine by click on the start button in the lower left hand corner of the machine and clicking log off or shutdown.

Clicking the Disconnect at the top of the screen in the Citrix Menu Bar will place the machine in a bad state and you will have to wait for up to sixty minutes in order to get back into the Virtual Lab.

If you receive a ICA 1030 error message when trying to re establish a connection you will have to wait sixty minutes in order to log back into the Virtual Lab this is due to clicking Disconnect in the Citrix menu and not shutting the machine down correctly.
