Daily Energy Breaks

Physical inactivity can result in increased risk of a variety of chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. The benefits of physical activity and exercise are numerous. It is possible for individuals to meet physical activity guidelines and still be considered sedentary. Occupations that require individuals to spend the majority of their workday at a desk provide little opportunity to engage in physical activity during work. This behavior is contributing to increased morbidity and mortality rates. Adding a few minutes of physical activity every hour or two will result in numerous benefits such as increased caloric expenditure, decreased fatigue, reduced stress, improved concentration, overall increased well-being and improved work performance. Here are some suggested energy breaks for you to engage in during the day.

Every hour (set a timer) and choose from the YouTube clips linked here: Perform for 30 seconds each:

  • Core
  • Upper body
  • Lower body

In an average workday you can add an additional 16 minutes of movement to your day. It’s never too late to get started!
