About the Center


The Center for Urban and Higher Education (CUHE) is a public education and research unit within the College of Education. Its specific mission is to construct and deliver quality professional development services to educational and community leaders that directly and positively impact student learning in urban settings Pre-K through higher education. CUHE’s urban education institutes, professional development workshops and trainings, and research initiatives provide the mechanisms for service delivery.  CUHE serves both the community and University by building and sustaining collaborative partnerships among practitioners, faculty, students, and community leaders.

This year's Institute will examine successful school and community practices to support quality outcomes for learners in diverse urban settings through the following themes: 

  • Teaching and Learning
  • School Climate
  • Administration and Leadership

Dr. David Stovall, Associate Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will serve as this year's keynote speaker.  You won't want to miss his presentation!  Bio

Collaborating partners:  Akron Public Schools, Barberton City Schools, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and the Canton City School District

Cost and Registration

$100 per person, which includes breakfast and lunch

One hour of University of Akron graduate credit will be available the day of conference for $150.

The Center for Urban and Higher Education invites you to submit a proposal for an interactive, urban-focused presentation at its 2014 Summer Institute on June 18.  Proposal criteria and online submission
