Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements

In order to apply for NBPTS, there are certain eligibility requirements outlined by the NBPTS. In general, teachers must:

  • possess a bachelor’s degree
  • have taught a minimum of three years in a public or private school
  • hold a valid teaching certificate/license (including for the three years of teaching experience).
  • be the teacher of record for a classroom or subject area in which certification is being sought during the year of candidacy.


Application Fees and the Ohio Department of Education

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has dropped funding for support services and for stipends.

The University of Akron has worked on grant funding to assist in ONE program:

Renewal Candidates:  A $500 National Board fee scholarship is available to candidates desiring to join the UA National Board cohort.  Contact Barb Baltrinic at (330) 972-5427 if you are interested in becoming a member of the University of Akron National Board Cohort.

Ohio Candidate Financial Support

NBPTS is pleased to announce that funding is available through our Targeted High Need Initiative program (THNI) to help offset the cost of the assessment fee in states that do not have a formal fee subsidy program and for teachers who teach in independent/private schools and are not eligible for fee subsidy money in their states.

Funding Available

  • First Time Candidates:  First-time candidates are eligible for up to $1,250 in federal subsidy to offset the cost of application.
  • Retake Candidates:  Retake candidates who have not used federal funds in the past are eligible for $350 to pay for the cost of one retake entry.

Application Deadline

  • First-Time Candidates:  December 31, 2012
  • Retake Candidates:  December 31, 2012

Stipend Information

The Ohio Department of Education has discontinued the stipends awarded to National Board Certified Teachers.  Some school districts are paying stipends or salary increases for NB certified teachers.  Check with your district.
