Transforming Urban Education:  Urban Learners Matter - June 20 @ Quaker Square Inn on the University of Akron Campus
The Center for Urban and Higher Education announces its second annual Summer Institute on urban education. This year’s institute, “Transforming Urban Education: Urban Learners Matter,” examines policies and practices of the educational services for learners pre-K through higher education in urban settings. The keynote speaker will be urban education expert Dr. Tyrone Howard, director of Center X at the University of California, Los Angeles. Howard will discuss “Why Race and Culture Matters in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America’s Classrooms."  For graduate students taking this for credit, please download the requirements

Integrating Engineering into Science - August 13-17 @ The University of Akron
Join us for a summer workshop at The University of Akron to learn about integrating engineering in your science and math classes. Taught by faculty in engineering, geography and education, the workshop activities engage science and math teachers in engineering design challenges that can be incorporated into the curriculum to meet new Ohio and national standards.  Deadline to register is April 20, 2012.  Registration form

Personal finance skills, like reading, writing, and arithmetic, need to be taught at a young age. Basic skills taught now means fewer problems with debt and credit later. This workshop will provide educators with lesson plans and resources so that they may incorporate personal finance into the curriculum through literature grades 6-8.  Registration form
