A Taste of Biomedical Engineering: Cardiac Tissue Engineering

Dr. Christie Zhang, Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering, The University of Akron

Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. It accounts for nearly 600,000 deaths in the U.S. per year, or every 1 in 4 deaths. Current medical therapy for heart disease is limited. Cardiac tissue engineering has emerged as a promising cell-based approach, aiming at partial or full replacement of damaged organs with in vitro generated tissue equivalents. An overview of the present state of the art and perspectives of cardiac tissue engineering will be given during the workshop.

This workshop is appropriate for teachers in grades 6-12.
