Research Accomplishments

Dr. Zhe's research interests lie in the area of MEMS/NEMS and lab-on-a-chip devices. Specifically, his research focus includes novel micro/nano scale devices for bio-related applications, microfluidics and nanofuidics, smart materials and structures, and micro/nano actuators for bio applications, and novel micro/nano fabrication. Since joining the University of Akron, he has carried out research of high throughput biosensors for assay of bio-objects and research into online health monitoring of rotating machinery via monitoring wear debris of lubrication oils. In addition, he has worked on several other areas, including micro/nano object manipulation, high speed gating of nanofluidic channels and energy harvesting using micro/nano structures. His research has been well sponsored by NSF, NASA, Navy and other resources. He has published numerous papers in archival journals and holds 2 US patents. He currently is on the Editorial Advisory Board of Recent Patents on Mechanical Engineering. Finally, in 2009 he was selected as the recipient of Lewis F. Moody award by American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his outstanding original work useful to the practice of mechanical engineering.
