Chair's Welcome, continued...
The faculty commitment is realized in teaching through a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum, including practical laboratory courses and a capstone senior design experience. The Department of Civil Engineering offers an ABET-accredited 136 credit hour bachelor of science in civil engineering degree. Our undergraduate students are encouraged to opt for the cooperative education program, which provides practical professional experience. Significant financial support from the civil engineering community translates to numerous scholarships available to new and existing students alike. Please visit our scholarship page for more details.
At the graduate level, we offer a master of science in civil engineering degree and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in engineering. Our graduates are in demand by industry, due to both the specific engineering and generic skills obtained from our courses. Graduates of our program have participated in developing infrastructure of many great cities and small townships, developing new structural materials and applications, and working on a wide variety of environmental issues to improve quality of life. The accomplishments of our graduates have been exemplary, and it is our job to continue to shape the future of civil engineering with cutting-edge research and new advances in student learning.
The University of Akron Transportation Institute and ASCE Student Chapter have grown into active student-run organizations that strive to promote the professional development of civil engineering students through curriculum-enriching activities, presentations, and projects. Every year the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams successfully compete with other schools on the regional and national arenas. Please check out our website for additional details on the school, application materials, and other information of interest.
