Dr. George K. Haritos is the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Akron. He serves as the senior administrator and chief academic officer of the College with responsibility for five academic departments – Biomedical, Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical Engineering – offering undergraduate and post-graduate engineering education. In addition, he oversees several College programs including those in Cooperative Engineering Education, Women in Engineering, Increasing Diversity in Engineering Academics (IDEAs), and Engineering Computer and Network Services. Dr. Haritos chairs the Ohio Engineering Deans Council, and is a member of the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) Board of Trustees and the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET) Board of Directors.
Dr. Haritos earned a baccalaureate degree in engineering (applied mechanics) and a master´s degree (engineering mechanics and materials) from the University of Illinois in Chicago. He attended Northwestern University as a Walter P. Murphy fellow, and earned the doctor of philosophy degree in engineering (structural mechanics) from NU´s Technological Institute. In 2010, he was named one of the "top 100 notable alumni" of The Graduate School at Northwestern University as part of its centennial celebration.
Prior to joining The University of Akron, Dr. Haritos was an Officer in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in the rank of Colonel. In his last Air Force assignment he served as the commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology. As head of the Institute, he was responsible for administering the Air Force´s graduate programs in science and engineering, acquisition, logistics, civil engineering and environmental management. He oversaw professional continuing education courses for more than 18,000 students per year from the military and civilian sectors of the U.S. Department of Defense, other federal agencies, and allied countries. Prior to his appointment as commandant of the Institute, Dr. Haritos served first as associate dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and later as vice commandant of AFIT.
Prior to his work at AFIT, Dr. Haritos served as deputy director and commander of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Washington, D.C. That was his second tour of duty at AFOSR. He previously served there as program manager, and later as director of the Aerospace Sciences Directorate, and as associate director, AFOSR.
Dr. Haritos´ Air Force assignments also included: chief, Flight Vehicles Division at Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Washington, D.C., professor of Engineering Mechanics, Air Force Institute of Technology, Dayton, Ohio, associate professor of Engineering Mechanics, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and aeronautical structures engineer, Aeronautical Systems Division, Dayton, Ohio.
The author of more than 40 technical articles, Dr. Haritos is a member of the American Academy of Mechanics and the American Society of Engineering Education, an associate fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has served as the Principal Investigator of several major, competitively awarded research grants.
