New chair of chemical and biomolecular engineering named

H. Michael Cheung, Ph.D., P.E., has been named chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Akron’s College of Engineering.

"Dr. Cheung has been a dedicated professor and has shown commitment to the success of students in the College of Engineering, and I am pleased to have him join our leadership team," said George K. Haritos, dean of the College of Engineering.

Cheung joined the College of Engineering faculty in 1984 as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.  He was promoted to Associate Professor and tenured in 1989 and promoted to Professor in 1998.

His research interests include engineering educational reform, materials synthesis in nanostructured fluids, laser light scattering, supercritical fluid processing, and sonochemical processing.  Dr. Cheung’s research has produced 50 publications, 6 patents, and 134 conference or invited presentations.  He has graduated nine Ph.D.’s and 27 M.S. recipients.  Dr. Cheung was recently honored as the 2013 Outstanding Honors Adviser for The University of Akron’s Honors College.

Cheung received his bachelor's, master’s, and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
