Biography

Before joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Akron as an assistant professor, Dr. Choi was a power electronics R&D engineer and later project leader at Toshiba international Cooperation in Houston, Tx, U.S.A. from 2008 to 2012. He was with LG electronics as R&D engineer in Korea from 2006 to 2007. He has earned Ph.D. degree in electric power and power electronics program at Texas A&M University – College Station in 2010. He has served as reviewer for the IEEE Transaction on Energy Conversion, the IEEE Transaction on Industrial Electronics, the IEEE Transaction on Dielectric​s and Electrical Insulation, APEC conference, IECON conference, etc. He is member of IEEE Industrial Electronics society, IEEE Working Group, and the Korea Institute of Power Electronics (KIPE). His research interest includes various renewable energy systems, high power energy system, Hybrid/Electric Vehicle, electric motor drive system, and IT-based power electronics system with emphasis on their system reliability.


Research Accomplishments

Renewable energy system, Motor driver design & control, power converter design & control, electric machine design, DSP application in HEV/EV system and diagnosis of electric machine system based on information technology and signal processing algorithms.

Research  area  will  be  primaril related  t energy power,  smart  grid,  hybrid-electric   vehicle technologies,   an electri machines.   Th Electrical   Engineering   Department   is  equippe with advanced power electronics lab, new renewable energy and hybrid/electric vehicle test facilities. The engineering program in The University of Akron is one of the most fast growing academic programs in the USA.

Successful candidates should have or will receive a MS degree in Power electronics program at the time of admission and should be eligible to enroll the Ph.D. program in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at The University of Akron. Scholarship will be provided.
