Biography

Part of the University of Akron adjunct faculty since 2011, Rich Heldenfels has also had a long career writing about popular culture. He has been a critic and columnist for newspapers in Virginia, New York and Ohio, including at the Akron Beacon Journal from 1994 to 2016, and writes a weekly column answering entertainment questions for the Tribune News Service. Publications include the book Television’s Greatest Year: 1954, and, with Tom Feran, the books Ghoulardi: Inside Cleveland TV’s Wildest Ride and Cleveland TV Memories. Shorter works include "More Than the Hood Was Red: The Joker as Marxist" in The Joker: A Serious Study of the Clown Prince of Crime and "The Bat, the Cat ... And the Eagle? Irene Adler as Inspiration for Catwoman" in The Supervillain Reader.
