Although it may seem like an alphabet soup of acronyms, it is well worth a FCS professional's time to investigate these important organizations. Although divisions of each organization is listed below due to their specialized information, the three primary national organizations for FCS teachers and professionals are Association of Career Technical Education (ACTE), American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), and Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCSEA.) The Association for Career and Technical Education is the largest national education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for careers. Teacher resources, legislative action and professional development opportunities will be listed on this site. This membership form contains all the necessary information to be an active member in the Ohio FCS division.
Ohio ACTE is the state affiliate of ACTE. The primary source for professional development for Ohio ACTE is the "Summer Conference." All Ohio career-technical teachers are encouraged to attend this important conference.
If you have paid dues for Ohio ACTE, FCS Division (which includes national dues) you are a member of OATFACS. This organization has been designated by the Ohio Department of Education as the primary provider of professional development for Ohio FCS teachers. The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) is the only national forum where K-12 teachers, university educators and corporate executives collaborate to improve the quality of individual and family life. We are 10,000+ professionals who educate and influence generations of American consumers in our classrooms, our companies, and our communities. As a member of AAFCS, you are automatically affiliated with the state organization, OAFCS.

FCSEA promotes effective education programs, supplements existing services and resources available to family & consumer science educators, and cooperates with other associations in related fields. Membership in this organization includes a yearly monograph on a current relevant topic for FCS teachers. FCSEA works with other organizations in the area of public policy through the Family and Consumer Sciences Coalition. FCSEA meets during the ACTE and AAFCS conventions. Its officers are elected by a mail ballot of the active membership. FCSEA is a non-governance affiliate of the National Education Association, Association for Career and Technical Education, and American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
