Awards for Out-of-State Residents

The University of Akron offers awards to qualified non-Ohio residents. The awards are applied to the non-resident surcharge and are in addition to other University-awarded scholarships.

Two levels of awards are offered: The Akron Advantage Gold Award and the Akron Advantage Blue Award.

Akron Advantage Gold Award

This award of up to $9,000 is applied to the non-resident surcharge for first-time, full-time non-Ohio resident students from one of the 49 states outside of Ohio and all U.S. territories.

Entering freshman students must meet two of the following criteria:

  • High school GPA minimum of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (based on sixth-semester transcript)
  • Top 10 percent of high school class
  • Minimum composite ACT score of 25 OR Minimum SAT score of 1200 (total score on SAT taken on or after March 1, 2016) OR Minimum SAT score of 1130 (combined critical reading and math score on SAT taken before March 1, 2016)
  • Awarded for eight (8) full-time, continuous semesters or until the completion of a Bachelor's Degree, whichever comes first

Entering transfer students: To qualify, you must have earned a minimum of 3.25 GPA with 24 semester hours completed after graduating from high school. Entering transfer students can receive this award for a maximum of six (6) full-time semesters.

Students who meet the Akron Advantage Gold Award criteria are ineligible to receive the Akron Advantage Blue Award.

Effective with the Fall 2016 entering freshman and transfer class, a dependent of a UA alumnus/alumna automatically qualifies to receive the Gold Award upon admission, regardless of ACT, SAT, GPA or class rank.

Akron Advantage Blue Award

This award of up to $7,500 is applied to the non-resident surcharge for first-time, full-time non-Ohio resident students from one of the 49 states outside of Ohio and all U.S. territories:

Entering freshman student must meet one the following criteria:

  • High school GPA minimum of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (based on sixth-semester transcript)
  • Minimum composite ACT score of 21 OR Minimum SAT score of 1060 (total score on SAT taken on or after March 1, 2016) OR Minimum SAT score of 980 (combined critical reading and math score on SAT taken before March 1, 2016)
  • Awarded for a maximum of eight (8) full-time, continuous semesters or until the completion of a Bachelor's Degree, whichever comes first

Entering transfer students: To qualify, you must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.75 with 24 semester hours completed after graduating from high school. Entering transfer students can receive this award for a maximum of six (6) full-time semesters.
