WHERE/HOW DO I?

Purchase/get receipts? How much does all of this cost?
Bindings, microfilm (dissertations only), copyright (dissertations only-optional) are paid for at the Cashier's Office in Spicer Hall. Bindings are $9.50 each, microfilming is $70.00, and copyrighting (dissertations only) is $45.00. An application for thesis copyright is optional and available at the Graduate School. Payment for thesis copyright is mailed to the address listed on the application.

If I am out of the state/country, can I pay for my bindings/receipts over the phone?
You may call the Cashier's office at 330-972-7214 and pay for your bindings, microfilming, and copyrighting, provided that you pay via credit card.

If I am out of the state/country can I mail my manuscript in for a check?
You may mail your manuscript to The Graduate School at:

Room 469 Polsky Building
Akron, Oh 44325-2101
You must include a postage paid, self-addressed envelope for the Graduate School to mail your manuscript back to you in.

Pick up a copy of the Guidelines?
You may obtain a copy of the Guidelines for Preparing a Thesis or Dissertation from the shelving unit in the lobby area of the Graduate School or by accessing http://www.uakron.edu/gradsch/ You may also telephone the Graduate School at 330-972-7663.

Obtain the Dean?s signature?
Your signature pages must include all signatures except for the "Dean of the Graduate School" and the "Date" signatures, which will be signed once you have turned in your final copies. A graduate assistant at the Graduate School will obtain these.

Get final copies printed?
You may print your copies at any store that provides this service. However, it is your responsibility to check your final copies for printing errors such as "slippage" (paper which has been misfed and/or misaligned during the printing process) and stray toner marks.

Turn in my final copies?
You must follow the checklist included in the Guidelines when preparing final copies. Final copies must be turned in to the Graduate School by the posted date.

WHAT ABOUT?

What if I miss the deadline for a preliminary check?
Extensions are not granted for the preliminary deadline.

Am I required to purchase copyright?
Copyright is not required. Consult with your advisor regarding whether or not you should purchase it.

Do my 2 library copies have to have a University watermark?
No, a university watermark is not required.

How long will it take for my final copies to be bound? Where does the library send them after they are bound?
Your bound copies will be sent to the bindery from the library. Contact your department?s secretary 8-10 weeks after your commencement date to pick up any additional bound copies of your manuscript. They will be delivered to your department, not to the Graduate School.

Can I use scanned or color images in my manuscript?
Yes, scanned and color images are allowed. However, they must be printed on 100% cotton paper. If you wish to print the images on glossy paper, you must request permission, in writing, from the Dean of the Graduate School.

OTHER

How long does it take to get a preliminary check done for my manuscript? Is it required? Can I turn my manuscript in for more than one check?
Manuscripts are checked in the order they are received, and take approximately 1-3 days to be checked. It is advantageous for students to turn in their manuscripts for checks as soon as possible prior to the preliminary dissertation deadline, as checks will take longer during busier times of the semester. Preliminary checks of manuscripts are required for all dissertation students (manuscripts must be turned in by the published preliminary deadline). While preliminary checks are not required for master's thesis students, they are highly recommended. All final copies will be checked according to the Graduate School's guidelines, and students will be asked to make corrections in them if necessary. Make certain that the student's name, department, advisor, and an accurate telephone number accompany all manuscripts.

Can I have a friend or relative turn in my manuscript for me?
Yes. You may arrange for someone else to turn in preliminary or final copies of your manuscript, however, it is the student's responsibility to make certain that they have completed the thesis/dissertation process, not the Graduate School. This includes, but is not limited to: obtaining signatures from committee members, making manuscript corrections, paying for and obtaining receipts, preparing final copies (including necessary forms), etc. Additionally, it is imperative that the student informs the Registrar's office of any address and or telephone changes.

If I turn in final copies of my thesis without a preliminary check, will they be automatically accepted?
No. All final copies will be checked according to the Graduate School's guidelines. Additionally, dissertations must meet the preliminary deadline for manuscript checks.

Does the graduate school get my signatures for me?
No. Your signature pages must include all signatures except for the "Dean of the Graduate School" and the "Date" signatures, which will be signed once you have turned in your final copies. A graduate assistant at the Graduate School will do this.

Will my final copies be checked for corrections?
Yes. All final copies will be checked according to Graduate School's guidelines.

Can my final copies be placed all together in one container?
No. Each individual final copy must be placed in a separate container (of an appropriate size) bearing the student's name, telephone number, social security number, department and advisor's name. Additionally, the two containers that contain the 100% cotton paper manuscripts must be clearly labeled Library 1 and Library 2.

How will I know if my final copies were accepted and processed?
You will be contacted if there is a problem with the processing and approval of your final copies. If you do not receive a telephone call from the Graduate School, your final copies will have been processed successfully. Make certain that the telephone number you have listed on your Library 1 manuscript container is a valid number at which you may be reached or a message may be left for you. Please allow a minimum of 10 working days for the Graduate School to contact you regarding any problems/corrections necessary for the processing of the final copies of your manuscript.

FINAL COPIES

Is there a checklist I can use to prepare my final copies?
Checklists for preliminary and final copies may be found in the Guidelines, or downloaded on-line at: http://www.uakron.edu/gradsch/

How many signature pages can I submit?
The student must provide 1 signature page per final copy. If the student provides additional signature pages for the Dean's signature, they will be sent to the student's department secretary approximately 1-2 weeks after commencement.

What paper is used for final copies?
The two manuscripts that are to be submitted to the library must be printed on 20-24 lb., 100% cotton (rag content), watermarked, white, 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. While you are not required to print all of your final copies on 100% cotton paper, you may do so if you wish.

What is the purpose of the Transmittal Sheet?
The Transmittal Sheet must accompany the thesis or dissertation when submitted in final form to the Graduate School. This form and all signature pages (page ii) should be placed in the Library 1 container. All information on the Transmittal Sheet must be accurate and is necessary for the processing of all the final copies.
