What is LGBTU?
"LGBTU" is the University of Akron's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Union. LGBTU is an oganization of LGBT students, faculty, allies and alumni.
Our goal is to provide an educational environment in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students can freely assemble for support, networking and campus/community advocacy related to LGBT issues.
We strive to develop educational programs and social events that work toward eliminatign myths, misconceptions and stereotypes that are oppressive while implementing University policies guaranteeing equal rights without discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. How can I get involved?
During Fall/Spring semesters meetings are usually held Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Student Union. Meetings/events are usually not scheduled during Summer semester (mid-May to August).
Meetings on the following dates will be held in Student Union Ballroom D (third floor): 8/31, 9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 11/2, 11/23. Meetings on other Tuesdays are in a location TBA (most likely in the Student Union).
Meetings include discussions, LGBT speakers from the community, movie nights, fun networking activities, and more.
We also sponsor social and fundraising events throughout Fall and Spring semesters. Please check our calendar for special meetings and events.
Come alone or feel free to bring a friend! Our group is not limited to LGBT students....we love to have allies at our meetings as well.
Cool! How can I learn more?
Just check out our calender or come to one of our meetings/events. Don't be shy! We welcome allies, and we provide support for those who are questioning or in the coming out process!
