What is LGBTU?

LGBTU is the University of Akron's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Union. Our goal is to provide an environment in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students can freely assemble in order to provide mutual support and to address the campus and community on pertinent issues. We strive to develop educational programs in order to work towards the elimination of myths, misconceptions and stereotypes which are oppressive while working for the implementation and enforcement of University policies guaranteeing the right against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

When are meetings held?

During the summer months we do not meet regularly, please email lgbtu@uakron.edu to inquire about any summer activities, or check our calendar.

For the 2009 - 2010 school year please check our calendar beginning in August to view our schedule of meetings and events.

Our officers work hard to bring a wide range of programing to the University of Akron, with events ranging from group discussions, movie nights, featured guest speakers, and various social events.

Feel free to bring a friend! Our group is not limited to LGBT students, we love to have allies at our meetings as well.

University of Akron LGBT Equality Committee: seeking two students

With the hard work of many people over the course of this past year we have been achieving some successes for LGBT equality at the University of Akron. The most recent success is the formation of an LGBT Equality Committee. This committee will look at how to make the University more LGBT friendly. The committee will consist of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and administration officials. I am seeking two students, one resident and one commuter, to serve on the University of Akron LGBT Equality Committee

If you are a University of Akron resident or commuter student and interested in serving on the committee please email me at lgbtu@uakron.edu as soon as possible. The committee will have its first meeting towards the end of June or early July.

LGBTU Resolutions pass!!

Congratulations!

I am proud to say that both of the LGBT Equality resolutions passed! Thank you for coming and showing your support!

Tonight we are all proud to be students, staff, faculty and community members associated with the University of Akron. It is an honor to see the LGBT campus community formally recognized. A warm thank you to the ASG Senators who sponsored these resolutions and who voted in favor of the LGBT resolutions, with your support the University of Akron is on track to becoming an inclusive campus for all persons. Also, thank you to Wyatt Curtis (original senate sponsor), Dan Coleman, Eric Hayden and Marcie Wiseman who have all worked and supported LGBTU to get these resolutions passed.

As we celebrate a great win tonight, we can not forget this is not the end, the road ahead is a long and tough journey. Together we can do it, we can accomplish what was once thought impossible. The momentum is on our side, enjoy this win, and tomorrow the next leg of this journey begins.
