Team History

The student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers has a long, and distinguished History at the University of Akron. Founded in 1986, the chapter first began with the Formula SAE team. It began under the direction of Dr. Richard Gross, who currently advises the Formula SAE and Mini Baja teams. But now, almost twenty years later, the student chapter is composed of four teams. They include Formula SAE, Mini Baja, Supermileage, and Aero Design. Dr. Jerry Drummond is advisor to the Supermileage and Aero Design teams. The University of Akron has enjoyed unparalleled success in that no other school has come close to winning the amount of awards Akron's combined SAE student section has won over the years.
