Points of Excellence

  • Founded in 1914 as The Curtis School of Home Economics, the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at The University of Akron is in Schrank Hall South, where labs are devoted to nutrition and foods, clothing construction and restoration, interior design drafting and lighting, textiles research, and nutrition.
  • The School's historic costume and textile collection features more than 2,000 items.
  • A well-equipped computer lab is provided for students, and is an integrated part of every program.
  • UA's Center for Child Development offers programs for more than 100 toddlers, pre-school children and school-age children. Operated by the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in conjunction with the College of Education, the center is an interdisciplinary learning laboratory for UA students majoring in child development, nursing, and education. The center also is a service valued by parents on campus and in the community.
  • The School's dietetics alumni are impressive. In the past five years, graduates of The University of Akron's Coordinated Program have achieved a 90% pass rate on the national exam for dietitians, far exceeding the national average.
