A new degree program at The University of Akron is helping to meet the evolving needs of the food industry.
UA’s new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Food and Environmental Nutrition is designed to address strong national demand for expertise in food and nutrition, employment needs of food manufacturers and related businesses, and growing consumer interest in food safety and locally grown resources.

The National Association of Social Workers has named UA’s Ashley Farrish to receive its All-Ohio Bachelor of Social Work Student of the Year Award.
This is the second year in a row that an undergraduate student from the UA School of Social Work has been selected. In addition, last year a UA graduate student also received the master's degree award.
Ms. Farrish graduated from the UA School of Social Work this spring with a bachelor of social work degree and a minor in women’s studies. She is now pursuing a master’s degree from the UA School of Social Work. She also is a 2005 graduate of Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio.

Dr. Roberta DePompei, director of UA’s School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and an internationally known expert in traumatic brain injuries, is serving as the interim dean during a national search for an inaugural dean of the new college.
Fully operational in August 2012, the new College of Health Professions will be highly collaborative, innovative, and inter-professional.
With a focus on graduating students who are prepared to excel as professionals in an evolving healthcare environment, the new College of Health Professions will be a model for health education, leadership and research in this region and beyond.
The Audiology and Speech Center in the Polsky Building is the clinical training arm of the UA School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
The Center provides evaluation and treatment for people of all ages, including children with speech, language and hearing disorders; children and adults who stutter; persons with voice disorders; adults who have acquired head injuries; persons who cannot speak and require technology to express themselves; and children and adults persons with hearing losses. Last year the Center logged nearly 4,000 client visits.
Among the many services of the Audiology and Speech Center: individual and group speech and language therapy; audiologic testing and rehabilitation; cochlear implant mapping; and hearing aid dispensing, counseling, selecting, dispensing, orientation, and repair. It also is one of the few sites in the country with an auditory-verbal clinic for infants and children with severe hearing impairments or cochlear implants.
