Our university takes a broader perspective than the traditional approach to higher education. The Akron Experience supplements students’ on-campus education by engaging them with business and community partners to create a personalized path to success for each individual. This distinctively Akron approach offers students learning experiences both in and out of classroom, and reflects our 15 years of collaborative partnership with the business and general community to create what others are calling The Akron Model.

The Akron Model recognizes education as an engine of economic development, and the university’s role as a convener, developer and anchor for clusters of innovation, based upon the principles of relevance, connectivity and productivity.  Our work in this area has produced such collaborations as the Timken Engineered Surfaces Laboratories, the National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion and Materials Performance, STEM middle and high schools in Akron, the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron, and so much more.

Our mission is to ensure student success and leverage our region’s unique assets in the creation of knowledge and applications of research that benefits humankind. Our vision is to set a new standard for public research universities in adding economic value and enriching lives.

Aspirational Goals of Vision 2020

Twelve distinctive aspirations provide a foundation for achieving Vision 2020 and reflect the University’s commitment to the principles of relevance (delivering tangible benefits to the campus and community), connectivity (achieving greater impact through partnerships, collaborations, and collective initiatives), and productivity, (adding value to the ecosystem with the University as an active agent of opportunity and innovation). The Accelerate campaign was designed to do exactly what its name implies: increase activity, development, and progress at The University of Akron. The campaign fully supports the University’s new gold standard of performance, Vision 2020, which capitalizes on UA’s distinctive competencies as it approaches its sesquicentennial and underscores its commitment to fiscal integrity, academic excellence, quality assurance, and strategic investment.
