Apply to the Honors College

Application

The Honors College welcomes applications from all self-challenging, highly motivated and high-achieving learners who have demonstrated their abilities to excel. The electronic application through the form listed below is preferred.

Application Guidelines: Applicants should have the following characteristics:

  • High school cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50, including participation in Honors, AP, or IB classes
  • ACT composite score of at least 27, or SAT combined score of at least 1800
  • Excellent high school rank in class
  • For transfer or UA continuing students, a 3.60 or above cumulative grade-point average at the college level, in addition to the above requirements.

Special Circumstances: If you have not met all of the above standards, you should include an explanation when submitting the Honors Application Essay.

Test Scores: Your highest ACT/SAT composite test score is the one considered for your application.  If your test score is not as high as you wish, we recommend taking it again.   An applicant is unlikely to receive further consideration with an ACT score less than the standard listed above.

Transfer students have a  final deadline for submission of applications of April 16.

An Honors College application is separate from the general UA application.  Applicants should complete that application prior to submitting an Honors College application. To be considered for scholarships other than Honors College scholarships, students must be admitted to The University of Akron by March 1. For information about general University scholarships, please visit general scholarship information.  Applicants determined to be qualified will be invited to interview with a representative of the Honors College.   The interview is a required part of the application process.

Recommendation Letter:  At least one recommendation letter is strongly encouraged. The recommender should submit his or her recommendation letters online, or click here for a hard copy of the recommendation form. The applicant must then choose to either waive, or not waive, his or her right to review the recommendation submission here. If the applicant does not complete this form, his or her right to review will be automatically waived.

If you have taken post-secondary or courses at another university, you should send at least an unofficial transcript directly to the Honors office: Honors College Admissions, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-1803.  To clarify your qualifications or to check on your application, please contact the Honors College by phone at (330) 972-7966 or by e-mail at honors@uakron.edu.

The electronic application below is preferred. If you would rather complete a hard copy application, then download and complete a hard copy application (be sure that your general admission application includes a transcript) and send to: Honors College Admissions, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-1803

Special Leadership Communities require an extra application:

Honors students with extensive leadership experiences may wish to apply for the Honors Complex Emerging Leaders Community.  This is a residential community of students with leadership background, independent of college major, that is housed near each other on the fifth floor of the Honors Complex. See information and download an application at Emerging Leaders Community. The deadline is March 17, 2012.
