The Honors Scholarship process
On the afternoon of November 22 and again, during the afternoon in February noted above, the Honors College of The University of Akron will host scholarship interview days for students who will be new Honors scholars as of fall 2014.
Early admission (non-binding) are those applicants accepted by Nov. 1. They will be invited to the event on Scholarship Friday- Early Admission. Those who attend will be interviewed by a team of two Honors College representatives: faculty, alumni, and/or staff. The Standard Admission date for Honors scholarship interviews is for those applicants accepted by Feb. 1. The Honors scholarship can generally be combined with offers from other offices at UA, such as the Office of Student Financial Aid. Honors scholarship offers are extended only to those students who attend our Invitation to Excellence Interview Day.
They range in size from hundreds of dollars to nearly full academic scholarships worth $44,000 over four years. Tuition at UA is relatively low in any case, and some scholarships include fees, room and board -- and for others, even books. Join the Honors College and you could receive a high quality college education for a relatively low cost.
To receive an Honors scholarship: Yes. There are opportunities to interview with the Honors College at other times, but only for extreme cases.
UA offers literally hundreds of scholarships at different levels each year. Some of these are from the Honors College and others are from the financial aid office, or from individual colleges/departments at the University. For example, the Physics Department has many scholarships available for students planning to study physics at UA.
The University also offers at least 50 "Scholarships for Excellence" per year ($6,000 per year) , and six Lisle M. Buckingham/Orr Family Honors College Scholarships providing tuition and fees, room & board. All of these are available to students in any major of study.
You won't be eligible for scholarships from the Honors College unless you apply to the Honors College. Of course, UA has many different kinds of scholarships. Factors such as leadership, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need are often considerations in many scholarships.
You are free to choose, although the Honors College is the sponsor of these events and students who are invited would be of honors quality. You cannot receive an Honors College scholarship unless you join. Additionally, there are many benefits to students in the Honors College beyond the Honors scholarships, and those benefits are a good reason to join the Honors College.
Students who are invited for a BS/MD interview should attend that interview instead of the Invitation to Excellence interview if those interviews occur on the same day. Otherwise, BS/MD applicants should interview for Honors College admission/scholarships as do other applicants.
It's a simple, two-step process:
1. Apply for admission to The University of Akron.
2. Apply for admission and the scholarships awarded by the Honors College.
The sooner you apply, the sooner you will receive an invitation to Invitation to Excellence . Apply before November 1 and receive an invitation to the early admission event. In any case, we request that you submit your application by January 1, as that will help us get materials to you in time. The final deadline is February 1.
