MEDICAL COVERAGE - OVERVIEW
The University of Akron is pleased to announce that our four major health carriers for 2005 will remain available for 2006. Carriers offered in 2006 will be:
- Medical Mutual of Ohio, for PPO and comprehensive. See the important note below concerning Medical Mutual and Summa Health System.
- SummaCare HMO (access to Summa Health System)
- HomeTown Health Network HMO (access to Akron General Network)
- Kaiser Permanente HMO
Questions to the health provider companies can be answered by visiting their Web sites or by calling their customer service numbers.
ABOUT SUMMA HEALTH SYSTEM AND MEDICAL MUTUAL OF OHIO:
| The points below apply only to people who use Summa services through the Medical Mutual PPO or through the comprehensive health plan. For those who use Summa's services through the SummaCare HMO, nothing has changed. |
- In 2004, Medical Mutual of Ohio and Summa Health System announced that they were terminating their contractual relationship, effective January 1, 2005.
- While the University has no control over the contractual relationship between MMO and Summa, we worked with both entities to make a special arrangement that allowed employees enrolled in the University's PPO plan to continue to use Summa facilities on an “in-network” basis during 2005.
- That arrangement will continue through December 31, 2005; however, the University has been notified that it will not be available in 2006 and after.
- Access to Summa facilities would generally be available on a “non-network” basis only to those in the Medical Mutual PPO at significantly reduced coverage levels (though those in mid-treatment could receive special exemptions, considered on a case-by-case basis). Another option for employees would be the SummaCare HMO.
- Those enrolling in the comprehensive health plan (also known as the traditional indemnity plan) who use Summa Health System's services will no longer receive the discounted amount for those services. The discounted amount for services was part of the contractual agreement between Medical Mutual of Ohio and Summa Health System.
HEALTH PLAN ESTIMATOR
We have built an online health benefits estimator that you can use to obtain a rough calculation of the cost of your medical plan. The estimator also factors in your pay raise.
SUMMARY OF MEDICAL PLAN FEATURES
We have prepared a chart that provides a broad comparison of the medical plans. Two versions of the same chart are available:
WAIVER OF MEDICAL COVERAGE
Employees again will have the option to waive participation in the University’s medical plan, but beginning in 2006, there no longer will be a credit of $500 for opting out. Those who opt out, however, will receive a 1.2 percent raise to their base salary as of Sept. 1, 2005, plus a $425 flat amount.
If you wish to waive your medical coverage for 2006, use this form. Please note that you will need to confirm that you have alternative coverage.
